DUALFORM
Create your own double disks that can be read on
single sided drives just like the cover disk!
"Oh no! Not another formatter", I hear you cry. However, DualForm is different
because by formatting the disk in a special way, it creates double sided, 800k
floppy disks that can be read using either a single or double sided disk drive.
The only restriction is that single sided disk drives can't access the programs
stored in the SIDE_2 folder (because they're stored on side 2 of the disk). As
you may have guessed by now, DualForm creates special format disks, just like
Atari ST User's cover disk.
DualForm is a single step process: run the utility to format a disk and
that's it, nothing more to do - that is, apart from copying your software onto
the disk, of course. Run DualForm, choose the drive to format, pop a disk in
the drive and away you go. DualForm will format a double sided, 81 track, 10
sectors per track 800k+ disk and create a folder called SIDE_2 with a file
called DUMMY in.
Copy onto this disk all the programs that are to be accessable by both
single and double sided disk drives. When you have finished, go into the SIDE_2
folder and delete the file called DUMMY. Now copy into the SIDE_2 folder all
the extra files that are to be accessed by only double sided disk drives. And
that's all there is to it.
PROBLEMS?
----------
As mentioned, single sided disk drives can read everything except the programs
in SIDE_2 because of the special format. However, because the disk is really
double sided, a single sided disk drive can't write to the disk so single sided
drive users should not delete files or save extra programs on it. This
restriction does not apply to double sided drives.
Also, the root directory can hold only 48 items and not 117. If you have a
lot of small files then the solution is to create a folder or two and put some
in there. You can't use the GEM desktop to copy DualForm disks.
