Operation Telescope
Ofir Galmor presents a scenario for Rainbird's
Universal Military Simulator featuring the
Invasion of Egypt, 5th November 1956
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To use this scenario with UMS load the game first, then select 'Run Simulation'
from the main menu. Now click on 'Read simulation from disk' and select
Anglo.Sim - viola! As UMS doesn't support water terrain I had to use the low
grounds instead. Please avoid travelling on this - no cheating!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the July 26 1956,Egypt nationalised the Suez Canal causing a major concern
both in Paris and London, who viewed it as part of the anti-imperialist move
lead by Egypt. The conclusion reached during the first discussions between
Britain and France in early August was that only a military operation could
restore the control of such a valuable strategic asset.
During the following months troops were gathered, command centres formed
and organisation of both sea and air transportation and assault units were
completed.
The main Allied base was the island of Cypres, where ships, aircraft and
soldiers arrived up until late September, but most were re-transferred to Malta
as the docks in Cypres were not large enough.
The Israeli attack on Sinai began on the 29th of October and was most
successful as the Israelies rolled the Egyption army all the way back to the
Canal. The Allied operation, due to begin in early Sepetember was delayed again
and again until it finally started on November 5th.
The sister cities, Port Said and Port Fuad, laying on the northern mouth of
the Canal, were selected as the target. The Allied forces landed there, took
over the cities and advanced down the canal, seizing Ismaelia and Suez as they
went.
Eleven days were allowed to take the entire 64km canal. British General
Keightly was assigned as commander of the Allies while land forces commander
was Lt. General Stokwell. The attack was divided into two seperate phases
(Operation Telescope and Muskiter):
1. (5th November): A paratrooper attack by a British and French battalions on
several key-spots in Port Said and Port Fuad. The places chosen were essential
for the amphibious landing due on the following day and included a small
airfield west of Port Said (British unit) and several bridges on both sides of
the canal connecting the city with the rest of Egypt (French unit).
This cutting the defending force, an infantry regiment (made of two reserve
companies called volunteers and two regular ones) of reinforcements from the
mainland.
2. (6th November): A full amphibious landing by the Allies, British taking Port
Said, the French assaulting Port Fuad. The landing force, assisted by numerous
fire-support ships, aircraft carriers and landing ships, included a Royal
Commando brigade, three infantry brigades, a tank company and the remaining
units of the paratrooper brigade (all British), two Airborne brigades, two
mechenised brigades and a commando company (all French).
Both had various support units like command, communications, medical,
airstrike coordination and Mortar/Recoiless Rifles. Although the Egyptions
brought reinforcements between operations, British-French dominance of ground,
air and sea was absolute.
As history now shows, the operation was a failure due to severely
over-complicated planning and under-estimation of the Arab force and his will
to fight.
