HANDYACC v1.0
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Not another Utilities Accessory your probably thinking!
Yes I'm afraid so. Handyacc is my first attempt at writing a Desktop
Accessory with GFA Basic v.3.5. In writing it I have tried to include
quite a wide range of Utilities and yet keep its file length and memory
requirement within a reasonable size. In using GEM Alert boxes rather
than a Resource file Handyacc uses 38kb of memory so it should be of use
to owners of 512 ST's as well as those with machines of larger memory.
All of Handyacc's individual utilities are selected from the opening
Alert box under the main headings of " Display " and " System ". After
a particular utility has been used you will return to this opening Alert
box where you can select another utility or return to the Desktop with
( yes you guessed it ) " Desktop ". However,as I personally find the
keyclick bell to be irritating ( and who doesn't?! ) it will automatically
be disabled when you first use Handyacc. Most of the utilities used in
Handyacc are pretty self-explanatory but here's a brief description of
them,
DISPLAY OPTIONS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
1. 50/60 hz : Switches the screen's frequency to give a larger screen.
I personally find this to be very useful but some programs don't
like it,e.g Trackers.
2. BLITTER : Is only available if your computer has a Blitter chip. I
haven't yet come across a program where disabling the Blitter would
be useful but at least STE owners can see the difference it makes
to some programs.
3. CHOOSE ( BACKGROUND COLOUR ) : In keeping down the size and memory
requirement of Handyacc I have limited the choice to three background
colours.
4. RESTORE ( DESKTOP COLOURS ) : Is useful if a program doesn't do it
when quitting!
SYSTEM OPTIONS
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
1. RESET : Performs a warm reset after checking that you really want to
do it. I was tempted to put in a cold reset option as well but on
balance its probably best to switch off and wait to clear memory
properly before carrying on.
2. RAM : Displays the amount of available memory in the top left of the
screen. Most programs grab all free Ram when run so you will more
than likely get a disproportionately small figure when selecting this
option from within a GEM program rather than from the Desktop.
3. DISK OPTIONS : Has three utilities. These are,
i. BOOTSECTOR : Which checks a disk in Drive A or B for an executable
Boot-sector. It doesn't check to see if youv'e actually got a Boot
sector Virus but tells you if you MIGHT have one! Use an anti-Virus
program to investigate further if an executable Boot-sector is
reported bearing in mind that the disk may supposed to have an
executable Boot-sector if its a game etc.
ii. DISK FREE : Reports the amount of free disk space in the top left
hand corner of the screen. It will show the amount of free space in
a Ram Disk - IF IT IS INSTALLED AS DRIVE D. Also,if you have an
external drive but have forgotten to switch it on,selecting drive "B"
will give you the option of switching it on without the need to reset
the computer.
iii. VERIFY : Switches off the disk verification check that the computer
automatically does when writing to a disk. This disk verification
is generally considered to be un-necessary and merely wastes time
writing to a disk. The time saved by switching it off is
definitely,in my opinion, worth any doubts that you may have in
disabling this check. There is the option to switch it back on if
you don't want to take the risk. For what its worth I always
disable disk verification and I've never lost any files - I'm not
even going to add " yet " to the end of that!!
Handyacc can be run as a program by changing its file extender from
.ACC to .PRG. It will work on an ST or STE in any screen resolution.
Hope its of use.
