LINDUM COLONIA - DEMO By Nigel Alefounder for PC Compatibles.
The demonstration files making up this stand-alone world, were
created using 3D Construction Kit I & II.
This is a true to life demo of a Roman town created from extensive
research by Nigel.Nigel will explain more about the demo.-
They demo was edited from a much larger project which is still
on-going, and is based on a real Roman town. There are runs
to the north, south and west gates of the city as it was about
150AD. There isn't much detail away from the initial starting
areas because this had to be removed to allow the data-file to
load into the Kit on a PC with an average memory set up.
A quirk of PC design is that the main, basic memory is no
bigger than 640k. Anything above this is software controlled
either through 'paging' or switching the processor into a
'protected' mode of operation. (Basically, don't ask unless
you're a masochist!) The data-file, supplied here, takes up the
full 64k world size the Kit can handle in one go. I know I said
640k was the basic memory, but most of this is taken up with the
programme code etc, leaving little for a world. Some menus and
code segments are loaded into the expanded or extended memory
available over and above 640k, but unfortunately it is of no use
to the data-file !?! See what I mean about "don't ask" ?)
There is a scale used within the world and that is 270 units
to 5'10" (approximate eye-height) Thus, columns are the right
distance apart and roads the proper width. Even though the detail
has to be pretty simplistic, quite a good effect of 'space' and
'being there' is created.
When you first see the view window, press 'Esc' key to load
in the border. As you peer out from the archway you can click on
the pink stone to the right for a quick video flight around the
first area. Don't think you only have to go forwards, do a 'U'
and walk into the square Forum area where in times gone by we
would have met to gossip, drop the odd bribe and lean
nonchalontly against the statue of the latest emperor, eying-up
the local talent or bartering for a slave.
