I realize this doesn't belong here, but....

By some coincidence, this came up in a conversation recently. It was decided
we need a new, genderless pronoun. My suggestion: "e." Yup, just "e."
It's close to both "he" and "she," and dovetails nicely with "I."

Dear ZOOlogists.
Here's the answer to the "Who's got ZOO"-mystery. Thanks to all of you sending
me all the hints (sorry, too much people to mention them all).
ZOO is available at the
info-server@unido.uucp
and can be retreived by sending a letter with the following message body:
request: binaries/atari
topic: volume6/zoo201g/part01
topic: volume6/zoo201g/part02
topic: volume6/zoo201g/part03
request end
If you're not familiar with the command of this server, just send an empty
message to the address mentioned above.
ZOO might also be available at other servers; I just tried out the UNIDO
service.
Thanks a lot for all your answers, good luck with ZOO.

What differences are there between TOS and PC-DOS 3.5" disk formats? What do
I need to do to read files from an IBM disk?
Also, can anyone out there tell me what the differences between pc-ditto and
pc-ditto II are? (Besides $225, of course.)
Thanks.

The PHAST newsletter is published entirely with PageStream.
Are there any other ST Clubs out there that would like to
share ideas about PgS and newsletters?? I would like to
see ideas about how PgS more effectively. Or what kind of
clip art you use. Or how you use PgS in making your newsletter.
I have not worked with PgS myself. A couple other PHAST clubmembers
do most of the work. BUt I would like to help them so any
info would be appreciated. Our newsletter is printed out
so that it is folded in half and then stapled (using standard
8.5" x 11" paper). The guys doing the work seem to like PgS
version 1.8 alot.

1.
When you use PC Ditto (software version) on a 1meg ST, you have 703K of
memory in PC mode. What can you do with that extra memory? Can you
create a 63K ram disk, leaving you with 640K while giving you some extra
speed? Can you create bigger ram disks, which will use the 63K in
addition to whatever other part of the 640 you want?....I'm new to the
ms-dos world, only getting into it after having gotten PC Ditto (which I
really like as a software product!). So, if anyone out there has any
suggestions on this topic, I'd appreciate it if you could keep it as
simple as possible. Thanks!
2. I know that Avant-Garde has a RT on Genie, but does anyone out there
know if they have an address on CIS (since that can be accessed via
email without actually being on CIS)?
As usual, thanks in advance for info any of you may have. Email me at
the addresses below, or post to the net.

Now that Richard's fixed his signature, we have a better chance of
mailing him directly, but I thought the following might be of more
general interest.
How well the Laserbrain emulates an Epson depends on several things,
including how good the printer driver of your applications program is,
and what fonts you have installed.
On the first point, where I work we nearly despaired when we got the
Laserbrain and tried printing the test document from First Word Plus
(UK v3.14). Hardly any of the style features worked, and after
printing the character table the rest of the document was printed in
the tiny 'York 16' default font. We later found out that the supplied
PRINTER.CFG file was for the wrong version of First Word Plus. (I
suspect Atari UK had simply redistributed an out-of-date German
version, but everyone knows how bad they are, so I'll stop flaming
them.) After we took the PRINTER.HEX file and reinstalled the .CFG
file, all was well. Similarly, with WordPerfect ST: when we tried it
with Laserbrain and the WP Epson FX80 driver, we got rubbish, and only
with the latest (Aug 89) version of WordPerfect, which comes with a
dedicated Laserbrain driver, have we had success.
On the second point, the number of 'style features' you get depends on
the set of fonts you have installed. With the supplied ELITE.DRF
(DRF=Druckerfont?? German again??) file, you can get bold, and
italics, but not bold italics, and there's no condensed font. It's
not too difficult to add fonts to the file, but they all take up
space. ELITE.DRF is 350k, and you could easily double that size if
you wanted a full set. You might need a 500k file to cover 99% of
your needs.
Apart from that, it works pretty well. Except that it occasionally
locks up, or starts printing the same few lines all down a page, or
throws a page in unexpected places. I'm not an expert, so I don't
know if this is a Laserbrain fault or a TOS fault or something to do
with the timing of the Atari's DMA channel (I suspect the latter, but
I'm not sure.) It is, however, for all its faults a great improvement
on the Diablo emulator. To begin with, it actually comes with some
documentation!
I hope this is some help to Laserbrain users. I'd like to see the PD
libraries carry some disks with better-thought-out font sets.

Several sources can be found in the pages of Computer Shopper.
Prices seem to range in the $65 - $75 range for either Teac or
Toshiba and usually include the 5.25 mounting kit which you
won't need. I've listed a few sources below but can't advise
you good or bad on any. I have a drive on order from Gems but
I picked them mostly 'cause they had some other stuff I needed.
Gems Computers 408-988-0161
Falcon Distributing 213-390-3955 (claims to beat any advertised price)
PC Discount Center 312-390-7450
Amax Applied Technology 818-282-9992
Just noticed another one - This is a small classified ad listing
various hard and floppy drives. They list a 720k floppy for $45
or $66 with the mounting kit. No brand or model mentioned.
Digital One 216-951-8088.

I talked to the Analog subscription office. They said that
the December issue was the last and that they would be issuing
refunds. I haven't heard anything official from them yet.
The reason I was talking to them in the first place is that
they sent me the 8-bit disk for Nov and Dec. (My subscription
was transferred from ST LOG as well.) They told me they would
send out the right disks, but I haven't gotten them yet either.
