- I know it is rude to post a followup to your own article, but I found
- out what the problem was. It seems that my internal drive was bad
- when I bought the machine, but worked. It got progressively worse, to
- a state where it was no longer usable. Well it was also the reason

- Hmm, this is a toughie. Think I got the problem though, and mebbe the
- solution...
-
- Sounds like the word processor doesn't like IBM disks. It's probably
- programmed to test the disk more than the Atari desktop (GEM) does. So,
- save the file (as ASCII text, if you can) on an Atari disk. Quit the
- word processor, and copy the file from the Atari disk to the IBM disk
- FROM THE DESKTOP.
-
- Caveat: sometimes the Atari doesn't like IBM disks due to an obscure
- thing called the "disk serial number", something which Ataris write to
- disks but IBMs don't... if the Atari sees two disks with the same serial
- number, it screws up *BAD* (thinks they're the same disk.) If the
- procedure I previously listed doesn't work, try copying the file to a
- RAMdisk or a hard drive (if your friend has one) first and then to the
- IBM disk. I hate GEM file copy anyway, you hafta swap disks umpteen
- times and it's slooooooow.
-
- BTW, I'm a "starving artist" writer myself.

- Subject: FTP Beginner's Guide
- To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
-
- This is a basic guide to ftp. It is intended only to get you on your
- way to ftp happiness. Please let me know if you have any comments,
- questions, or suggestions.
-
- weiner@atari.archive.umich.edu
-
-
- Jeff Weiner's FTP Basics Vol.1 #1
-
-
- Part 1: Logging in
- To begin an ftp session, the first thing you need to do is log in to our
- machine. You can do this by issuing the 'ftp atari.archive.umich.edu'
- command. You should then see something like this:
-
- Connected to atari.archive.umich.edu.
- 220 atari.archive.umich.edu FTP server (Version 4.169 Wed Jan 2 17:03:56 EST 199
- 1) ready.
- Name (yourhost.domain.edu:yourusername):
-
- At this prompt you'll want to type 'anonymous'. On some hosts, the word
- 'guest' will work, but 'anonymous' is always a sure bet.
-
- If you don't see this login prompt, but instead get something like
- 'Our host was unable to trace a name back to (some internet address).
- We only accept ftp from properly registered hosts', then you'll have to
- ask your sys-admin to properly register your machine in its name servers.
- There's nothing we can do on this end, so please don't bother asking.
- Also, if your machine doesn't allow you to specify the atari.archive name,
- try using out internet address : 141.211.164.8 Then, march down to
- your sys-admins office and ask him to install name-service. Your life will
- become much easier.
-
- Assuming you recieved the above prompt, you'll then be asked for a
- password. Use your mail address. For example, I would use
- 'weiner@atari.archive.umich.edu'
-
-
- Part 2: Basic Commands
- Once you're logged on, there's a few basic commands you'll want to know about.
-
- ls : lists the names of files of sub-directories in a directory.
- ls -C : Lists the files horizontally, instead of vertically.
- dir : does the same thing as ls, but is needed on some other machines
- ls -l : A verbose listing of files. Includes permissions, filesize, etc.
- cd : changes directories (i.e. 'cd atari' would put you in the atari area)
- cd .. : Goes 'back up' a directory, to the one you came from.
-
- These are about all you need to get moving around the archive.
-
-
- Part 3: Getting the Goddies
-
- The main reason you want to ftp in the first place is to quickly transfer
- files. More often than not, you'll want to transfer the files from
- the archive to your account. You can do this using the following commands:
-
- First, find the file you want to download.
- Second, issue the command 'type binary'. This tells our machine that
- you'll be transferring a binary file. This is really important. You'll
- waste a LOT of time if you download files that were not transferred in
- binary mode.
- Third, issue this command 'get <filename.ext>'. This will instruct
- the archive host to send <filename.ext> to your account.
-
- The last thing you'll want to do is use the 'quit' command. This
- tells our machine you're no longer interested in ftping files, and would
- like to go back to your command prompt.
-
- Now, you'll need to download your files from your mainframe(sparc, whatever)
- to your ST. Usually you'll want to use either kermit or x- or y- or z-modem
- protocals. They're very reliable. I'd be quite hesitant to try something
- else. Also, your machine and ST are usually unique to you. This means
- that I really can't help you with this part. You could try asking, but
- I'm going to promise anything.
-
- Part 4: A Few Words on Net Ettiquette
-
- Net Ettiquette is something that every net user should be aware of.
- Relating to ftp, and our archive, it is essentially this:
-
- 1) Try to keep ftp usage to an absolute minimum during business hours,
- in our time zone. That would be 9 am to 5 pm , EST. This roughly means
- upload or download one file or so and little else during these hours. After
- 5pm, have a blast. Go nuts. We probably won't mind nearly as much.....
- Otherwise, we will drive to your campus or place of work (even if you
- live in Europe) and we'll kick youe butt. Or, Jon will sing Prince
- songs to you. Whichever you'd like the least.
-
- 2) If you have a question about some aspect of ftp service or some
- other area of your computer, please ask around at your site first. Don't
- immediately fire off all of your questions to us. I don't mind answering
- questions about the archive, problems with logging in, or something
- similar. But I tend to get upset when people ask me questions like,
- "Jeff, how come I can't get the fgrep command to work properly on
- my sparc station...."
-
- 3) Please try to upload files that you know the archive doesn't have. I
- know it's not the greatest thing to do, but if you can find time to
- download stuff, I think you can find time to return the favor and
- upload things also.
-
-
- If you have any reasonable questions, any comments or concerns, etc.
- please mail them to me, weiner@atari.archive.umich.edu.
-
- Thanks,
- weiner

- Subject: Graphics on the STE - v. generally speaking...
- To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
-
- I've posted a few bits and pieces lately about the graphics capabilities
- of the ST series, but I don't seem to have learned much, so, here are
- all my questions....if you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it...
-
- 1) I have a 520 STE (w 4/meg add on)...and the SM 124. I asked a few
- weeks ago about graphics on this kind of system, and a number of people
- all suggested that I look into GIF stuff...I have been doing so, downloading
- dozens at a time from wuarchive, and viewing them on the PC that does the
- downloading - they all look brilliant. But when I get them home they look
- crap.
- Is the usual method of de-giffing a colour (heck, even mono) picture
- onto an ST merely the clumping of black and white dots, at a horrendous
- resolution? I know that a lot of effort went into writing these programmes
- out there, but it seems amazing to me that on the VGA system (yes, I know
- it has better graphics) it can look so amazing, and on my ST it looks like
- someone sneezed! Am I doing something wrong? I've been using ViewPic which
- is very nice for loading gif images, and works in mono or coulour (but looks
- bad either way...the colours are all off), but the gray images still look
- like nothing more than clever optical illusions...
-
- So...:
-
- 2) Does the STE have gray scales, you know, proper shades of gray, not
- just the nearness of black and white pixels? How can I use these scales?
- When I look in magazines I see some AMAZING pictures on SM124s that are
- gray, but look as sharp as a photograph! They ought to! 600 x 400 should
- yield fantastic quality...so, where is it?
-
- 3) Is there any source ftpable that has a collection, or even just
- a few, of these images? What might they be called? What kind of suffixes
- will they have? GR8? GR9?
-
- 4) Is it possible to get Gif images to look remotely nice on a STE?
-
- Thanks in advance for any help that can be given...I just sorta jumped into
- the world of the ST without really looking at what it can and cannot do..
-
- Thanks,
- Scott

- I was wondering if the Multi-Scan monitors are same as multisync.
- Because there is a local store here with multi-scan SVGA monitors
- 1024x768 .28mm for only $380.00, It is a Samsung monitor. I have also
- seen Panasync 1391 monitors as low as $329.00 WOW. This is not a miss
- type price since I thought it was, but it's not.
- The computer prices around Denver Colorado has been very low, I guess
- it is due to the low sales, 486 systems are as low as 1800.00 here.
- Can someone please tell me what the 486 systems and TT are going for
- elsewhere?
- I been deciding on getting a TT system, but since the prices are falling
- around here, perhaps I should wait. I already have 486 system, but still
- like to have a TT.

- Unlike Audio Sculpture, it allows you to save modules. It also works

- > ffff8e20 and turns it into -> 8e20 then takes
- > 00ff8e20 -> ffff8e20???
-
- Depending on the situation, the first is usually correct. When a 68000 sees
- a short address it sign-extends the address to 32 bits, and $8e20 extended is
- $ffff8e20. So, for instance, the following two instructions have the exact
- same effect, only the second one is 4 clock cycles slower:
-
- move.w d0, $8e20.w
- move.w d0, $ffff8e20
-
- I'm not quite sure why it would take 0xff8e20 and convert it to 0xffff8e20,
- but doing so causes no harm on any 68000 system since the upper 8 bits of an
- address are ignored, nor does it cause any harm on the TT/030 because it
- treats pages $00 and $ff identically, even though it is a 68030.

- a box, a disk, and a folded sheet of paper with instructions, such as they
- were, while my other copy had a mulitpage stapled manual) but it had everything
- you needed (and at about 1/4 the price I paid at my local dealer for my
- first copy).
-
- Based on my one experience, I'd order from them again...

- And now for my (slightly related) question:
-
- Has anyone had any luck getting Archipelagos to work at all? After I bought my
- copy from the local dealer, I broke my ST trying to upgrade the memory and
- by the time I got it working again and got around to trying Archipelagos, my
- dealer had cleaned out the bank and split town, leaving his financier holding
- the bag...so when I found it wouldn't boot, I was stuck. I ordered a new
- copy from Sideline, and it has the same behaviour...can't copy it, can't
- boot with it, etc....is this a program that broke on upgrading to TOS 1.4?
- Is something flakey in my machine? Or by some remarkable coincidence did I
- just get two bad copies of the same program? (I'm going to call Sideline
- and ask for their help, but I thought since the subject came up here, I'd
- ask here as well).

- Just one word ahead: Go out, sell your SC1224 and get an SM124 instead. Most
- comm packages perform best on a monchrome display.
- I use Rufus, a german comms package written by Michael Bernhard. It has build
- in X- and Y-modem and uses the GRZ/SZ-zodules for zmodem. It's quite fast,
- supports all resolutions, including the TT resolutions; uses different fonts
- (with GDOS) and has a built in batch interpreter.
- Now, why do I use it? It's fast and reliable, it has the best ansi-emulation
- I've ever seen and offers a lot of possibilities. It's shareware, the fee is
- 50 DM, that's 30-35$.
- The only problem for your is that Rufus is in German, but i've heard rumors
- about an english version floating around...

- A couple of questions...
-
- 1) What's the going rate for a new-style Lynx in the US? I don't mean the
- absolute cheapest price, just the sort of price I could expect to get one
- for by shopping around a little.
-
- 2) Is there any difference between the US version of the Lynx and the UK
- version?
