- The problem with doing it in ProRebel form is that unkowingly you have
- included the entire ProCopy program! The way ProRebel does it's magic is
- it runs ProCopy and then when it reaches a certain point, it dumps all
- the contents of memorY (including the program) to disk.

- Generally, programs that do direct hardware access, won't work
- I have found very few of them.

- Dunno about these models you asked.
-

- severe crashes too.
-
- >_ What kind of hardware can you use with it (Portrait Screens CD, ...)

- Almost any hardware, ST or Mac oriented. No Mac-screens can be used,
- but there are quite many graphics-cards available for ST. And TT has enough
- resolution without any cards.
- You can even use AppleTalk and Mac SCSI with a special interface.
- TT has it's own LAN, that works like AppleTalk with Spectre.

- I have a problem that I hope someone can help with. It seems that
- certain models of the color monitor, including the one I have, display
- colors much more darkly than they should. As an example, there are parts
- of Dungeon Master where I can barely see things even when I've got
- all the torches I can light on (and these same sections come out
- bright and clear on someone else's monitor.)
- My questions (please Email answers, since I often don't have
- time to read through news): 1) can I adjust this thing so it will
- be brighter? and 2), if the answer is "no", does someone have a
- monitor I could get cheap that WOULD be brighter? I'd be willing
- to trade and then add bucks on top. The monitor FUNCTIONS fine, it
- just is darker than it ought to be; if you are mostly into word
- processing it wouldn't give you any problems at all.
- Thanx,

- I also liked the new Atari User magazine. However, I'm not sure I'd recommend
- a subscription yet. This is intended as a free distribution magazine, so it
- should be available at no cost at your local Atari dealer. It is also being
- distributed through newsstands at $1.00 per issue, cheaper than the
- subscription price.
-
- Also, while this first issue is well-written, informative, and timely, it is
- their first issue. I'd like to see if they can keep up the quality before
- sending off for a subscription. Especially since their is no price savings
- for subscribing. I imagine it will continue to be good, since it is put out
- by the same folks who published the excellent ST JOURNAL.
-
- In short, if spending $15 bucks is no big deal to you, and you'd like to have
- the magazine mailed to you, go for it. Otherwise, try picking it up over the
- counter. You may find that you don't care for it, or may be able to pick it
- up for free.

- The OS design is beautiful and still being advanced today.

-
- Not so. The QL has 512*256 (4 colour) or 256*256 (8 colour + flashing).
- 68000 and 68020 (with optional FPU) 'compatibles' exist, and prototypes must
- have been built with higher screen resolutions. The Thor XVI (was manufactured
- in Denmark) has a 2-layer design with a seperate I/O processor to reduce CPU
- load while communicating beyond the CPU bus. This gives a marked improvement
- in throughput on such a multiprocessing environment.

-
- For D.I.Y. types:
- There is a redesigned circuit board and kit/plans for a QL compatible,
- available from QUANTA, a worldwide QL user group based in U.K. with membership
- around 5,000 to 10,000 people.
- The main improvements are a built-in floppy disk interface and a keyboard
- interface to connect up standard PC-type keyboards, maybe also mouse and
- parallel ports. As far as I know, the kit is available to members only.
- The QUANTA newsletter is full of good quality material, also lots of special
- offers to members. The QL is far from dead.

- There is a standard filename called `PRN:' or `LST:' that you should be able to
- use just like any other filename. TOS recognises this filename and directs the
- output to the printer. For example, you would write fopen("LST:","w"). You'll
- need to check yourself which one works... one is standard TOS - the other was a

- Someone asked whether or not it was impossible for an ST to get a

- believe this due to the fact that just about every hard drive has it's

- Subject: Help needed with TOS 1.4 and TDI's Modula-2
- To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
-
- I have found an apparent 'bug' with TDI's Modula-2 and TOS
- 1.4, and was wondering if anyone out there in net-land could give some
- advice.
-
- I upgraded to TOS 1.4 last summer, and never did much Modula-2
- programming as I did not have a need to. However, I am now taking an
- intensive programming class with Modula, and it would be very helpful
- if I could access the language at home.
-
- I found out early that the ramdisk that comes with TDI's M-2
- doesn't work very well with TOS 1.4-- after installing it, it crashes
- the computer (4 bombs) any time I switch disks in the A: drive and hit
- the escape key. I went around the problem by using a ramdisk in a
- desk accessory that I downloaded from atari.archive. So far so good.
-
- After doing some programming and compiling, I had some errors
- in my file, which was saved by the compiler in a file with the
- extension ".ERM". The .ERM file contains a list of columns, rows, and
- error numbers where the errors have occurred. TDI's Modula-2 editor
- is _supposed_ to load up this file when editing the source code and
- show the errors on the screen, along with english descriptors.
-
- Unfortunately, it doesn't. It loads up the file to be edited
- as per normal, but acts as if the .ERM file doesn't exist. This makes
- debugging very, very hard to do as I would have to get a hardcopy of
- the .ERM file, move the cursor around manually to the row/column
- coordiantes, and then look in a book to get a translation of the error
- number. On a practical level, this is too time consuming to be
- worthwhile-- especially with the large programming assignments I will
- soon be receiving.
-
- I have copied the editor and compiler to the A: drive and
- recompiled my module to see if there was still a problem with the ram
- disk accessory, but have received the same results. I have disabled
- all accessories (except the ramdisk accessory), and all items in my
- AUTO folder to be sure there was nothing "clogging" up the editor.
-
- Since TDI's ramdisk had a problem with TOS 1.4, I am assuming
- that the editor's problem is also with TOS 1.4. I am thus left with
- two options:
-
- 1) Get a patch/fix for this problem. Anyone have an
- idea/suggestion?
-
- 2) Reinstall my old TOS 1.0 chips. (GROAN!) I hate to do it,
- but the class is so programming intesive and my (working) Modula
- language is so much superior than what we have at my universitie's
- mainframe that I would be willing to make the scarifice. If I have to
- do it, could anyone please mail me the schematics on which order to
- place in the chips? My chips are labelled as such: 7K2 A6, 6M4 A7,
- 6M3 A4, 7K3 B4, 6M3 6(B?) 6M3 A6.
-
- Thanks a *lot* to anyone who can help me!

- haven't, the Cleveland Freenet is an experimental computer system providing
- free public community telecomputing. Basically, it's a lot like a public
- library of the future. Many of these systems are popping up all over the
- country. Don't be surprised if one pops up in your neighborhood in the
- future.
- Anyways, upon logging onto the Freenet one comes across the hundreds
- of Special Interest Groups on the Freenet ranging from a culinary and gaming
- SIGs to a Veterinarian, Dental, and Medical information dispensories.
- Another area is the Computer Corner which consists of many computer SIGs.
- The Atari SIG is one of the largest computer sigs here and is growing
- everyday.
- Recently the Atari SIG has undergone a significant face-lift. All
- the regular areas are intact including its news sections, user group
- newsletter, online magazine sections, general as well as specific
- computer discussion boards (8 bit, 16/32 bit, Lynx, Portfolio), and our
- weekly Sunday night multi-chat conference.
- The conference starts at 8pm EST sharp and is on channel
- "+Ataricon". What the staff at the Atari SIG has added, has given the
- Atari SIG the potential to cover all grounds of Atari and its related
- products.
- The most noticeable addition to the Atari SIG is the Programming
- and Development Forum. This forum is intended to be used by developers,
- professional programmers, and Atari hackers (the old definition of
- "hacker") as a means to share ideas, help each other out, and find out
- the latest technical information on Atari's products. This board is ran
- by newly acquired SIG Operator, Peter Haller, a professional programmer
- who is running developer sections on hardware and software development,
- programming, MIDI applications development, Graphics Design,
- plus many other sections that can definitely become a programmer and
- developer's dream come true!
- Last, but definitely not least, the Atari SIG has a restructured
- Product Info and Support Board and a new Special Applications Board.
- The Support Board includes a vast library of support lists. These lists
- range anywhere from phone numbers of Atari dealers and producers, to
- software reviews for 8 bit, 16/32 bit, Lynx, and Portfolio software.
- To sum it all up this area covers what's out there, who makes it, and how
- to get it for all Atari products. The Special Applications Board is
- just starting out. Currently there is an area for users of MIDI on the
- ST. MIDI users are encouraged to use this as a means to discuss MIDI
- related topics. This section is expected to expand in the future.
- Accessing the Atari SIG has never been easier. One can access it
- via Internet by telenet'ing to 129.22.8.75 or "Freenet-in-b.cwru.edu"
- or by calling (216) 368-3888 300/1200/2400 bps. Once on the system,
- a user can apply for an account application and logon as a visitor.
- Once here, simply type "Go Atari" to get to the Atari SIG. A visitor
- can go anywhere on the Freenet and can read anything. They can't
- post messages until they get their permanent accounts, however.
-
- For additional information on obtaining access to Freenet write to
- myself via the e-mail addresses above or by writing the SIG at its US
- mail address:
- The Atari SIG
- P.O. Box 21815
- Cleveland, OH 44121 USA
-
- Lastly, a freenet application is available in the mail by writing a
- request to the above address if you rather not download it from Freenet.
-
-
- The Atari SIG is ready to serve the thousands of Atarians throughout
- the world. We look forward to seeing you all real soon! Remember the
- staff of the Atari SIG are volunteering their time for no pay and the
- Cleveland Freenet, as well as the Atari S.I.G., is a non-profit organization
- existing for the free exchange of information.

- To: Info-Atari16@naucse.cse.nau.edu
-
- Someone recently said that VKiller is up to version 3.81 now. I've only
- got up to 3.11, so where can I get this new version from?
-
- Also, as an afterthought, does anyone know if the hard drive in the Mega
- STE is just an MFM drive being controlled by a SCSI interface, or
- whether it's true SCSI? If it's just MFM, then when it's finally
- released in the UK (anyone from Atari listening out there? Hello? Earth
- calling Atari...please come in, Atari...) I can upgrade the Mega 1 to a
- better standard than the Mega 2 for less.
-
- I know Canada has released a Mega 1, so does someone over there know
- anything about this?
-
-
- Thanks for any info,
- Ian McCall (csd015@uk.ac.lancs.cent1)
