  83. I like GEM. I _need_ MultiGEM. GEM does almost anything the MacOS will do
  84. for you. MultiGEM will do almost anything a Mac with MultiFinder does for
  85. you. So how can you tell us nobody wants a multitasking TOS?

  90. It's not brain dead. It works. It's quite fast, if you compare it with Windows.
  91. It's easy to program. And I like it. Please don't think ATARI must be

  116. I disagree totally. Why should someone buy an Atari when he really wants
  117. to run MAC software. Atari will only survive, if their own operating system
  118. can compete. With things like FSMGDOS and a multitasking TOS in development..
  119. Don't forget: TOS is 32 bit clean NOW, and you can easily run TOS software
  120. on a 16MB machine.This is really nice for image processing and DTP.

  130. I like Turbo C, too. But it's just an absolutely normal GEM application,
  131. just a SciGraph, Gemini, Rufus, Interface, Script and many other fine
  132. GEM based programs.

  144. If you say things like that, you have to give reasons. Comparing GEM with
  145. Windows or Motif, there are a lot of good things both VDI and AES, and
  146. it will someday more than one GEM program at once, I see no problems at
  147. all.

  149. Note: as far as I know, with Motif you simpla don't have a _virtual_
  150. device concept: you simply can NOT redirect screen output to metafiles
  151. or printers.

  186. It already is.  Also note that the original posting about "Getting GCC 1.39
  187. up and running" (which I posted about a month ago) also has GCCEXEC plainly
  188. definied with a trailing '-' ... primarily because this is the way that the
  189. GNU.G file for the Gulam shell was set up.

  305. It can be done, but not with the MIDI port: the sound of the soundchip is
  306. available at a pin at the monitor port (the manual says whichone it is, I cant
  307. remember it now), so all you have to do is just plug in an interfacebox
  308. (selfmade) or put a cynch-plug into you atari (I have done so) connecting it
  309. with the outputpin at the monitor plug, its really easy to do and it sounds
  310. great!!

  362. I think I got an error during the unlzh as well, but I tried to unMSA it
  363. to disk and it worked, but locked up prematurely.  The result is that
  364. the big demo works fine, but there's a newer(?) version of Esion also
  365. on the disk, and I get two bombs when I run it.

  437. Assuming AutoDesk is a company, what do they produce?  (If it's a
  438. product, what is it?)

  459. Hi, I have just bought a second hand (maybe second user to U.S. folk)
  460. Spectre GCR, it came with version 2.0 software, I realise we are now on 3.0
  461. so I have a few questions.

  463. 1) What are the advantages of 3.0 over 2.0

  465. 2) Where do I get 3.0, does Dave allow users to pass them amongst themselves
  466. or is that not on. If it is on can some UK user with 3.0 (or even 2.65) get
  467. in touch with me and I will reimburse all costs. If the upgrade has to be
  468. done via Dave, where do I contact him, is he still at 40 W. Littleton Blvd

  547. sumex.stanford.edu (thanks to the person who suggested it) along with some
  548. other mac conversion programs.

  550. The good thing to come out of my abortive attempt is that I compiled my
  551. first programs on the Sparc here at school.  (this is coming from an
  552. dictionary-definition end user, so its a big deal to me)

  554. Thanks to everyone who helped me out.  Maybe someday I'll be able to afford
  555. Spectre.  (hah, right!)

  693. Don't use Logbase() in a VDI context. Just use 0L as a pointer to
  694. the current screen. VDI will automatically convert this to the
  695. actual address needed and will even fill in the word width and plane
  696. count parameters in the MFDB automatically!

  720. Don't use Getrez(). This code will crash under nearly all graphics cards
  721. (MATRIX, MGE, OverScan, Reflex) and even on the TT.
  722. If you blit to / from the screen you must set fd_addr = NULL. In this
  723. case all other values are filled in by the VDI. You can't know how many
  724. BytesPerLine the actual graphics card has.
  725. For the 'offscreen' MFDB, you must use w/16*planes. It does not matter if
  726. the BPL in the offscreen area is different to the screen MFDB (As in
  727. OverScan mode or with the Reflex card), the VDI handles this correctly.

  737. Don't intercept VDI and XBIOS calls. The Xbios calls are only for the
  738. 'main console' of the ST and not for a graphics card. (But most cards
  739. have an emulation of the calls). If you use Getrez() with a Matrix card
  740. installed, you will get the rez of the (probably not connected) ST-monitor.
  741. With Physbase(), Setpallete, Setcolor there is the same problem.
