 If you hate the atari ST so much, why the hell do you post things on OUR
 newsgroup!!! You should not even be bothering about it!!! I'll be quite
 frank with you : Get lost!!! Why don't you go bug someone else with your
 presence (Like an Amiga group since you LOVE them so much :-)

 No, really! If you, or any other, don't like tha atari, it's your right,

Use appropriate menu to install the application for the first extension, then
save the desktop. Now edit desktop.inf, duplicate (or triplicate :-) the line
which contains the name of the application in question, then change the
extension at the end of the line. NOTE: Change JUST the extension! Don't
remove the space at the end of the line, etc... If you are using a
wordprocessor make sure you save the file in "ASCII" format.

I have an AdSpeed STe, it does seem to improve some things by 100%. Since
it is relying on a cache of around 32K, there are still lots of cases
where you'll see much slower performance. I was intrigued by an ad I saw
recently from a company selling an ST accelerator with 128K of cache, 64K
for tag space and 64K for data. This sucker sounds like it could be very
cool, 100% speedup nearly all the time.

Just wish there was a 68010 that ran at 16MHz, most I've seen is 12.5.

The best, most complete raytracer that I have seen is the QRT
raytracer.  It has a fairly understandable input language, and it
makes some fairly impressive images.  It does glass surfaces and
thus handles refraction.  QRT is PD or shareware (not sure which).
It comes with a program that converts the 24-bit RAW image file into
a Spectrum picture.

I got it from a local BBS.  I no longer use it, though.  I generate
images using DKBTracer on a Sparc (Fast!).  Unfortunately, the BBS
I got it from is no longer around, and I do not have a complete archive
of the program.  Maybe someone else has info on it.

I'm going to be in the market for a laptop/notebook computer somewhere over the
next couple of months.  Seeing as I have an ST now that I'm completely happy
with, it makes sense to pick up the ST book and use them in conjunction.  Can
anyone tell me what their status is right now?  More importantly, does anyone
have one yet, and if so, what do they think?  I'd also appreciate hearing
from anyone who may have used one at a trade show.  My two biggest questions
right now are; what is the cost, and how is the quality of the display.

If anyone has any info, they might as well post it, I'm sure there are other
people who are curious as well.  Thanks in advance..

NCD does a brisk business selling monochrome X terminals built around
mere 12 MHz 68020s, with "small" 1024x768 displays. Points 1 and 2 are
flat wrong. In most places I've worked, monochrome displays have
outnumbered color displays by at least 5 to 1. Very few applications
in the real world *demand* color, and monochrome displays tend to be
sharper and easier on the eyes.

Resale value? ???? Sheesh, anything you can buy is already obsolete,
by definition. Have you looked at the PC clone market? Talk about nil
resale values - but do you honestly expect otherwise?

There are several companies selling commercial support for GNU tools.
If you'd ever examined a GNU package you would know this already. As
for the "experimental" status of GCC - perhaps the support for SPARC,
i860, and other "new" chips is still experimental, but the Motorola 68k
support is very very stable, as is the Vax support (not that that's
particularly relevant here...). If you knew anything at all about gcc,
you might recall that 68k and vax were the original targets supported
by gcc, and as such are the most mature. If you sift through the gnu.gcc.bug
newsgroup I doubt you'll be able to find a 68k bug report (and not for
lack of use, either - consider the fact that the gcc/68k compile speed
is a standard factor in the SPECmark benchmark, used by nearly all workstation
vendors these days. Or that the NeXT machines all ship with kernels
compiled by gcc...).

Packaging these compilers is a smart move - good quality software for free,
and unlimited future updates for free. What more can you ask for?

Unix is unix, SCSI is SCSI, VME is VME. SCSI & VMEbus device drivers for
Unix are everywhere.

This isn't a factor when you're talking about breaking into the workstation
market. HP/Apollo/Sun users aren't gonna have (m)any TOS programs lying
around to worry about anyway. PC and Mac users moving up from DOS or the
Mac OS are too entrenched in their own private hells to consider as a
market alternative (although migrating to a TT would allow preserving much
of their peripheral investment...).

Pretty good scam; while other people have to go rummaging around begging for
