Before using this program you should have already done the following:
1. Be sure that you are NOT using the Original Master Diskette. First make a copy of your Original. 2. Have already prepared another blank, formated diskette. (If you don't know how, consult your computer owner's manual) 3. Have read the FAMILY TIES manual 4. Place the Master Copy in default drive (A) and blank disc in B (Hard disc will have all files together in same subdirectory (and default to that subdirectory before typing FTINSTAL)

Once a database has been created it is not possible to change the disc capacities for which it was originally installed. Data can be transfered to drives of LARGER capacity but the limits on the number of individuals permitted cannot be increased. Moves to SMALLER drives can be done but one or both of the DATA files (.DA4 or .DA5) will have to be moved to the other drive. This will reduce the total number of individuals possible in the database - this move is not recommended but if used be sure to change the drive locations for the moved file(s). (RE-INSTALL Selection D.)
You will first be given a list of computers from which to choose. If you do NOT find your system in the list then use selection 2 to check the list of TERMINALS. If you still cannot match your system then chose the CUSTOM install and enter the codes as requested.

It is VERY important to have spare copies of your data on separate discs as data can be lost by accidental errasure or a power/computer failure.
In the manual it is recommended that you have at least three separate sets of discs on which to keep your back-ups. Format 6 extra disks (3 if using single data drive option D ) and label each pair clearly as PROGRAM or DATA disc, Database family name and BACK-UP number (1,2 or 3).
The program will keep track of which disc set to use for your next back-up and when you exit FAMILY TIES it will supply the back-up disc set number.
You may wish to use more than 3 (or fewer - not recommended) back-ups. You will now be entering the 'CODES' to set the printer in the required mode for each particular printout.
You may enter these 'CODES' in Decimal (0-9) or Hexidecimal (0-9 & A-F) form. The codes needed to software SET your printer in the operating mode for each type of form are found in the Hardware Manual for your Printer Ask the Dealer who sold your printer for help if necessary. When installing FAMILY TIES there are limitations on the maximum number of individuals who can be stored in a Genealogical Database. This upper limit is defined by the disk capacity. If you plan to move the database to other computers with different disc capacities then choose the smallest size that will fit on the computers. To calculate the Maximum No of records available onyour computer find the disc capacity of the data drive (usually B:) in K bytes,minus amount used (If selection A or B) and multiply the result by 16.

What is the disc capacity of computer? Your computer/terminal can be installed in one of 3 ways: 1. Selecting one of the 'Standard' pre-defined computers/terminals 2. 'Custom Installing' (when your computer/terminal is not pre-defined) 3. Selecting a 'Standard' installation and using #2 to modify some codes (Selections 2 & 3 require knowledge of your terminal's control codes).
In the 'Standard' selection the terminal codes are predefined (usual choice)
The Customizing routine allows you to enter in the control codes needed to position the cursor and use other functions on your terminal, instead of using one of the pre-installed options from the menu.
To 'Custom Install' a terminal, you will need the 'CODES' for: Terminal Initialization Screen Clear Reverse Video or Dim ON Reverse Video or Dim OFF Cursor Positioning Bell Ringing on your terminal (this informaion is USUALLY found in your Hardware Manuals). You may supply this information in Decimal, Hex or ASCII. This means if you enter a character 'K' as a code, in decimal it would be entered as '75', because decimal uses only digits 0 thru 9. In hex it would be entered as '4B',hex uses digits 0 thru 9 and characters A-F. In ASCII a 'K' would be entered by pressing the 'K' key. You may wish to call your computer store for explanation of the Customization Screen which follows. (This IS rather technical.) We will now go to the testing section to test these entries.
Check especially the positioning of Row 1, Column 1 (upper left corner), because the Row and Column Offset numbers often need to be adjusted up or down 1. (Some terminals count the first line as 0 instead of 1) -- TERMINAL SCREEN CONTROL TEST --
We will try to draw a simple test pattern on your display. First a box should appear, running around the edge of the screen. Then asterisks (*) will be placed in each corner of the box. Rows will then be numbered, followed by the numbering of columns. An asterisk will be placed centered in the lines at row 10, column 20. Last, messages will be displayed in the lower half of the screen.
If everything looks right, hit a 'Y' for YES. If the test fails, hit an 'N' for NO."
