FIGURE 1-5. The polymerase chain reaction. Oligonucleotide primers
homologous to 3' and 5' regions of the target sequence are used with
taq polymerase to amplify the target sequence within the template DNA.
The DNA strands are heat-denatured and the primers are allowed to
anneal at a specific temperature determined by the length and base
composition of the primers. The reaction is heated to 72 degrees C to
allow primer extension by taq polymerase. The newly synthesized
strands are used as templates in each subsequent cycle such that 30
cycles produces 2**30 molecules.
