TABLE 1-1. The Genetic Code
* The RNA codons and their corresponding amino acids are shown. The
nucleotides are abbreviated for the bases they contain: uridine (U),
cytosine (C), adenine (A), and guanine (G). The first nucleotide in
each codon is shown in the left column, the second nucleotide is
listed along the top of the table, and the third nucleotide is
indicated in the right column. For example, the RNA codon AUG encodes
the amino acid methionine (Met). The amino acids are alanine (Ala),
arginine (Arg), asparagine (Asn), aspartic acid (Asp), cysteine (Cys),
glutamic acid (Glu), glutamine (Gln), glycine (Gly), histidine (His),
isoleucine (Ile), leucine (Leu), lysine (Lys), methionine (Met),
phenylalanine (Phe), proline (Pro), serine (Ser), threonine (Thr),
tyrosine (Tyr), tryptophan (Trp), and valine (Val). The codons
specifying chain termination are denoted as Ter.
