  1. FIGURE  45.3-5C. Transfer  of  therapeutic  molecules  to  normal  and
  2. leukemic  cells  using safety-modified  retroviruses.  The therapeutic
  3. molecule,  a stretch  of  antisense mRNA  homologous  to a  functional
  4. region  of the bcr-abl-encoded  mRNA of CML cells,  is embedded in the
  5. 3'-untranslated region of  the multidrug chemotherapy-resistant  cDNA.
  6. All cells  without the  virus are killed  by chemotherapy.  The normal
  7. cells  transduced  by  the  virus  are  protected  from  chemotherapy.
  8. Although  the transduced leukemia  cells can acquire  drug resistance,
  9. they are suppressed by the antisense ribozyme sequence.
