FIGURE 6-9. The steady state number of cells in a tissue is dictated
by the increase in cell number cause by proliferation and the decrease
in cell number caused by cell death. Increases in cell numbers can
occur with either too much proliferation or too little cell death. As
a simplistic model, increased activity of oncogene products or
decreased activity of tumor suppressor gene products can lead to
increased cell proliferation, and proapoptotic and antiapoptotic genes
influence cell death.
