Trident OS/2 2.1 Display Driver (Beta)
6/8/1993
Thank you for using Trident display adapter. Currently, Trident
display drivers support the following resolutions with OS/2 2.1:
640x480x16 (standard VGA)
640x480x256
800x600x16
800x600x256
1024x768x16
1024x768x256
Warning: This driver is only for Final Official Release of OS/2 2.1.
It will not work with any BETA version of OS/2 2.1
WHO NEEDS THESE DRIVERS
IBM has done a great job to support all major super VGA
cards in OS/2 2.1. But when they wrote the code, some of Trident
chips were still under development. OS/2 2.1 is guarantteed to
work with TVGA8900B, TVGA8900C and TVGA9000, but might have trouble
to work with newer chips, such as TVGA8900CL/CXR/CXi, TGUI9420, etc.
If you happen to use the newer Trident chip, you need drivers
in this diskette.
If you use TVGA8900B/C or TVGA9000 and meet trouble, you may try
these drivers also, because they are newer and fixes some potential
problems.
PREREQUIRMENT:
We strongly recommend you installing boot manager onto the
hard disk so that you can boot OS/2 and DOS. In case you make
a big mistake in OS/2, you will have good chance to correct it by
booting from DOS and manually modify configuration files.
Before you install Trident OS/2 display drivers, make sure that
the OS/2 is installed properly for generic VGA.
To make OS/2 work in standard VGA mode, you need to tell
OS/2 that the adapter is a VGA (Video Graphics Array) rather
than Trident super VGA. The reason is: OS/2 2.1 knows how to
recognize Trident chip. When it finds out a Trident card is
installed, it will assume the board is a TVGA8900B/C or TVGA9000
board, and use the corresponding special parameters to drive the
card. Sometimes, that will set the new chip into an incorrect status.
Use the following procedure to tell OS/2 to use generic VGA:
1. After most of OS/2 is installed, you are asked to select
video card. It will display the "Primary Display" is
"Trident super VGA"
Now, use mouse to click the square beside "Primary Dispaly"
and it becomes "checked", and click "OK".
2. In the list of display cards, select
"Video Graphics Array (VGA)"
NOTE: Do NOT choose "IBM VGA 256c", which is not standard
VGA.
3. Continue the installation.
When you install the driver first time, be sure to make
ORIGINAL OS/2 2.1 display driver diskettes handy, since
most of the files needed to install Trident super VGA
drivers are there.
INSTALLATION
Since the drivers are too big to fit into one floppy, we
need to copy all necessary files into a hard disk. Using hard
disk will let you change resolutions easily.
If you do not want to change resolution after the installation.
you can simple delete the whole directory after you selected
the right driver. You can save about 1.5M bytes hard disk
space by deleting the whole directory.
The installation procedure only works under DOS. It can be a full
screen DOS session under OS/2 or a true DOS by booting from DOS
partition.
To copy drivers into hard disk, at "A:\>" prompt, run
the following command:
INSTALL boot_drv: [dsp_drv:\dsp_path] [dst_drv:\dst_path]
Where:
boot_drv OS/2 boot drive. Must be given.
dsp_drv,dsp_path Drive and path where the original OS/2
display drivers is located. It is an
optional parametr. The default is A:.
If dst_drv is A or B, don't give
dsp_path.
dst_drv,dst_path The destination drive and path where
Trident display driver is copied to.
An optional paramrter. The default is
OS2_drive:\TROS2DRV. If this parameter
is given, dsp_drv:\dsp_path must be
specified.
Examples:
INSTALL C:
The OS/2 is installed on C: drive.
The original OS/2 display driver will be in A:.
Trident OS/2 drivers will be copied into C:\TROS2DRV.
INSTALL D: D:\DISP
The OS/2 is installed on D: drive.
The original OS/2 display driver is in D:\DISP.
Trident OS/2 drivers will be copied into D:\TROS2DRV.
INSTALL C: A: C:\MYDRV
The OS/2 is installed on C: drive.
The original OS/2 display driver will be in A:.
Trident OS/2 drivers will be copied into C:\MYDRV.
After installation, the following files will be in \TROS2DRV:
DSPRES.DL_ TR480A.DSP
IBMVGA32.DL_ TR480AC.DSP
VGA TR480B.DSP
WINVGA TR480BC.DSP
WINXGA TR600A.DSP
SV60016.DL_ TR600AC.DSP
SV480256.DL_ TR600B.DSP
SV600256.DL_ TR600BC.DSP
SV768256.DL_ TR768A.DSP
WSPDBF.DR_ TR768AC.DSP
WSPDSBF.DR_ TR768B.DSP
WSPDSF.DR_ TR768BC.DSP
WSPDSSF.DR_ PSVGA32.DSP
DSP256.DL_ PSSVGA32.DSP
DSP76816.DL_
SW256.DR_
SVGA.EXE is copied to \OS2;
VSVGA.SYS is copied to \OS2\MDOS;
PSTRID.DSC is copied to \OS2\INSTALL
A new SVGADATA.PMI file will be generated in \OS2.
SET RESOLUTION
You need to run DSPINSTL (display installation) to select
color and resolution you want.
During DSPINSTL, choose "Trident" as primary display.
When asked to assign where the driver is, set "Source Directory"
to D:\TROS2DRV or where you copy the drivers to.
Current 800x600 and 1024x768 16 colors drivers do not support
seamless Windows. The seamless 16 color drivers will be in the
next release very soon.
