Hi,
This is just a quick description of what MaxFile/2 can do in
it's present Beta. Now, it is a beta and carries all the standard
hazards. Be sure to back up everything and then back it up a second
time just to make sure. I know this program can/has trashed files.bbs
and other files here during it's development so I will take no
responsibility for any damage to your own system or mental health. I
have tried take any/all safeguards to make sure data is not lost but
mistakes can be/have been made. The program is much more stable than
it used to be and is now (I belive) quite safe to use for day to day
file operations.
MaxFile/2 is shareware and carries a registration fee of $10.
This is not IMHO an extravagent fee and the program is quite useful
for the Maximus/2 sysop.
MaxFile/PM is now also in development. This will be a PM
application and will hopefully be fully SAA/CUA compliant. It will
have similar features and a similar look and feel. Drag-n-drop is a
high priority in the PM version as is full WPS integration. It is
hoped that a Beta of the PM version will be available in the next 4
weeks or so. For information, contact Craig Morrison @ 1:201/60 or
myself.
MaxFile/2 is a Maximus file manager for OS/2 2.x. It will not
run under DOS and probably won't ever unless someone else takes the
time to port it themselves. Dos port will be attempted by Craig
Morrison@1:201/60.0 at some point in the (probably distant) future.
Maxfile/2 presently has the following features/abilities:
-Text based with support for any window with size greater than 80x20
-Move files
On moving a file (hurling), all the file's date
attributes are retained (unlike Maximus) as well
as the call OS/2 DosOpen API is used to try and
reduce file fragmentation for FAT file systems.
-Delete files
-Adopt files
-Verify integrity archived files
-View contents of archived files
-Edit file descriptions in files.bbs (limit of 249 chars)
-Remove file descriptions from files.bbs
-Replace file descriptions in files.bbs
-Two windows open at a time to view different file lists
-Sort files.bbs based on date, size, or name, increasing or
decreasing.
-Extract FILE_ID.DIZ and attempt to use as file description
when file is adopted or on demand (any high ascii chars are
changed to ' ').
-Change archive type of files while retaining old file dates.
This is done in a background thread and the priority can be
changed by a .cfg variable. Note that the window in which
the re-archiving is being done is locked to that file area
until the re-archiving is finished. You also cannot exit
until the re-archiving is finished.
-"Touch" files to change last modfied date to current date
-Run fbp.exe on only the modified areas when done.
-Spawn GIF/JPG/BMP viewer. This is done in a separate thread
so you can edit file descriptions as you view the file.
-Use external Virus scanner
-Header comments are not trashed (used to be...)
-Select files for multiple move, extract file_id.diz,
delete files,...
Planned enhancements:
-None at this time. Make a suggestion if you think MaxFile/2
is lacking a particular feature.
Hoped enhancements:
-Mouse support with drag-n-drop b/t windows.
-More Multi-threadedness: move files in a thread
Problems/Features:
-Growing file window is relatively slow.
-Maximum of 1000 file areas
-Does not run in a Max door (uses _read_kbd() and video uses
hardware, not stdout...)
Known Bugs:
-For some odd reason, the video will occationally get
corrupted. This is due (IMHO) to some as of yet unknown
bugs in the compiler. If you are able to reproduce some
video corruption on a regualar basis, PLEASE INFORM ME!!!
I would be very grateful as this has been an extremely
annoying bug.
