  1. README for XIcon version 1.0                                    04 Jan 1993

  3. XIcon is a conversion program for translating icons between various
  4. formats.  It was written by Norman Walsh <norm@ora.com> using EMX/GCC.

  6. XIcon reads:

  8.   Mac icon resources (raw resource forks)
  9.   Windows icon files
  10.   X11 XBM files
  11.   OS/2 v1.2 Icon files
  12.   OS/2 v2.0 Icon files

  14. XIcon writes:

  16.   OS/2 v1.2 Icon files
  17.   OS/2 v2.0 Icon files
  18.   Windows Icon files (well, sortof--it's mostly untested)
  19.   X11 XPM files

  21. My appologies for the poor documentation and hideous command line options
  22. of this program.  For a brief summary of the available options, run XIcon
  23. without any parameters.  Here is a brief summary:

  25.   xicon <options> input output
  26.  
  27. Will convert the icons in "input" into OS/2 1.2 icons in "output".
  28.  
  29.   GENERAL OPTIONS
  30.     -2  Write an OS/2 2.0 icon file instead
  31.     -w  Write a Windows icon file instead (largely untested)
  32.     -x  Write an XPM3 icon file instead
  33.   
  34.   OPTIONS FOR MAC RESOURCES
  35.     -p  Use Mac palette rather than OS/2 palette.
  36.     -I  Don't include ICN# resources (32x32x1 images)
  37.     -#  Don't include ics# resources (16x16x1 images)
  38.     -l  Don't include icl4 resources (32x32x4 images)
  39.     -s  Don't include ics4 resources (16x16x4 images)

  41.   OPTIONS FOR XPM FILES
  42.     -a  Write all the icons.  Since XPM files can only contain a single icon,
  43.         xicon normally translates only the first icon found.  If -a is 
  44.         specified, the output filename is used as a pattern and "#.xpm" is
  45.         appended to it.  If the output file is "test", xicon will create
  46.         "test1.xpm", "test2.xpm", etc...
  47.   
  48.     -R  Specifies an alternate colors database file.  XPM files contain color
  49.         names.  In order to determine what names to use, xicon reads the
  50.         "rgb.txt" file in /usr/local/lib/X11.  If your rgb.txt file is 
  51.     somewhere else...  Note: if you don't use X11, you probably don't have 
  52.     an rgb.txt file, so one is supplied in this distribution.  Of course, 
  53.     if you don't have X11, you probably don't have much use for XPM files 
  54.     either...

  56.   OPTIONS FOR XBM FILES 
  57.     -f  Set foreground color to 'C'.  
  58.     -b  Set background color to 'C'
  59.   
  60.         C=0..15 or 't' for transparent, or 'r' for reverse of background.
  61.   
  62.     -r  Don't reverse the bit order of the bytes in the file.
  63.     -m  Set mask file.  The mask file is ANDed with the background and the 
  64.         image.

  66.   OPTIONS FOR MAC FILES ONLY
  67.     -p  Use Mac palette rather than OS/2 palette.
  68.     -I  Don't include ICN# resources (32x32x1 images)
  69.     -#  Don't include ics# resources (16x16x1 images)

  95.   future version of this program will no doubt be a PM application with
