Release Notes for
Arn V1.00 alpha rel3
(alpha Release 3)
This is not an illegal hack, but
THIS IS JUST A PRELIMINARY VERSION OF ARN V1.00 TO SEE WHAT YOU HAVE
TO EXPECT FROM THE V1.00.
This version (rel 3) redirects the HEADERBUFFER CORRUPT error-messages
to stdout and gives more detailed information about it. The cause of
this bug is still not clear (it's obviously not in Arn source code)
and it's unfortunately not always reproducable. Now, you should get the
message only once.
PLEASE: If you get this error just read KNOWN BUGS in Arn.doc and send me
a mail.
Rel 3 fixes also a bug in ArnMaster which caused endless loops when a Re^
was in the subject line.
If you come from Rel 1, note that Arnmaster no longer rejects valid
articles and has additionally a -L (force line counting) and -C (check for
database consistency) option. A few changes were made in Arn concerning the
X-files.
The pager now allows you to show _all_ previous pages.
** NOTE that NEWSDIRTYPE is NO LONGER a VALID keyword in .arnrc! **
** Dillon's AmigaUUCP is now supported by Arnmaster, although
the scanning phase will be much longer without an active-file
that is supported by your news system. Matt refused to support
an active-file, yet.
If you have Dillon's AmigaUUCP you must specify the DOTDIRS keyword
(i.e. DOTDIRS Yes) in the configuration files and use option -A for
ArnMaster (see Arn.doc and Arnmaster.doc for details)!!!
If you have too much trouble with this version you should forget it and
switch back to V0.72 which is more reliable. So V1.00 alpha is not
a replacement for V0.72, but a completely different program.
This version is still VERY UNCOMPLETE but the basic functions work
(maybe not always as expected..:-). I use it everyday, but I know
where the potential bugs are...
You can use it if you find it stable enough, because it'll give
you much more comfort than Arn V0.72. But don't complain for
bugs or any loss of data or that the functions don't work as
described. Note that the docs are very UNCOMPLETE and many functions
will change as well as new ones are added. The online-help should
be the best way to find through this jungle...it's nearly consistent.
Besides bugs you have to accept a little inconvenience, too:
Arn now requires the program Arnmaster (which is naturally included)
which must be invoked each time you get news. In later versions
you don't have to start it manually, because a daemon will do this
for you everytime rnews was activated. The daemon doesn't exist, yet.
To read news, just start "arnmaster" each time after you got news (they
should be already sorted in). After it has finished it's work you can run
'arn' and read news in a 'normal' way.
The file .arnmasterrc should be moved to UULIB:!!
The GROUPLIST-files of Arn V1.00 are incompatible with the ones earlier
versions, but it can read the old ones. The best method is to copy your old
GROUPLIST with a new name and set GROUPLIST to this file in your .arnrc.
WARNING: Don't use any of the search or goto functions, although listed in
arnhelp.txt: they are not completed yet and it often results in
endless loops!
Nevertheless I hope you'll get the idea what's going on with Arn.
Bugs: Read the KNOWN BUGS section in Arn.doc
Have fun,
Roland
