Subject: US Time Zones 2.0
Please find attached for the archives US Time Zones 2.0, a HyperCard stack
(actually, a single card). US Time Zones 2.0 requires HyperCard 2.0. Size
on disk is approximately 26k. Tested and works under system 6.0.8 and 7.0.1
on a Mac LC w/ 12" screen and a IIci with a 13" screen and on a PowerBook
140 unde 7.0.1; I have no reason to believe it shouldn't work on any
HyperCard 2.0-capable Mac.
I originally wrote this stack about two years ago and recently found a new
use for it, so here's the update for HyperCard 2.0.
The stack displays the four continental US time zones with boundaries and
the current time in each zone. An "area code" button allows you to enter
the three digit area code for any area code in the US and Canada, including
Alaska and Hawaii and provinces not shown on the map.
The primary purpose of this stack is to determine what time it is in a
given area code. If you spend a fair amount of time playing phone tag with
vendors, contacts, etc. who give you a phone number but no location, this
will likely be a useful time saver for you. It will also help you if you
tend to forget what time it is somewhere else in the country and want a
visual reminder.
If you use other utility stacks, I'd suggest copying the card whatever
stack you use. You'll need to use a resource mover to copy the PopUpMenu
xfcn to another stack (thanks yet again, Andrew Gilmartin.)
Instructions and legal mumbo jumbo are included in the stack.
Let me apologize in advance for my US- and Eastern "centrism" (and me a
former resident of Canada, too). The default zone can be set to any of the
four continental time zones. If anyone in Hawaii or Alaska finds this
useful, send me mail and I'll add the westerly time zones to the map -
ditto Canadian provinces (remember the area code part will work for you.)
Note the stack is stupid about standard vs. daylight savings time. I never
fixed the automatic update of this. If someone has pseudo-code or HyperTalk
code for checking this, I'd appreciate a copy.
Future plans: sometime I'll re-do the "World Time Zones" map when I can
figure out how to get a decent world map onto a 9" screen (the original
version of this never looked that great.) When I can find time to dig the
tech note up, I will add a direct connection to the longitude and latitude
info available via the MAP control panel.
