  3. Problem Running DOS/Windows Applications on Systems with Cirrus based 
  4. Video Adapters
  5.  
  6. The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified an 
  7. application interoperability problem with the October Beta release 
  8. of Windows NT.  On systems where a Cirrus based video adapter is 
  9. installed, an NTVDM error may occur preventing execution of MS-DOS 
  10. and Windows applications.  NTVDM errors can occur due to other 
  11. factors as well, however this fix is intended for those experiencing 
  12. this problem with Cirrus chip sets. We have verified a fix to 
  13. NTDETECT.COM and are making this available to our customers 
  14. experiencing the problem today.

  16. Please follow the below instructions carefully to remedy this problem.

  22. 1.  Connect to the WINNT CompuServe forum, Library 2 where you will find 
  23.     WNT005.ZIP.  This file was created using the PKZIP file compression
  24.     utility.  You will need the PKUNZIP utility to extract the files to 
  25.     a directory on your hard drive.  PKUNZIP can be found as PKZ110.EXE  
  26.     in Library 2 of the IBMCOM forum.  Download PKZ110.EXE and execute 
  27.     the file to extract the PKUNZIP.EXE utility.  To extract the WNT005.ZIP 
  28.     file, type: PKUNZIP WNT005.ZIP C:\WNT005 for example.  The following 
  29.     file can now be seen:

  31.         NTDETECT.COM
  32.         README.TXT

  34. 2.  Close all applications running on the desktop. 
  35.  
  36. 3.  Execute the MS-DOS Command Prompt in the Main Program Group. 
  37.  
  38. 4.  Change directory to the root of your hard drive where you will locate 
  39.     NTDETECT.COM*.
  40.  
  41. 5.  Rename NTDETECT.COM* to NTDETECT.OLD*.  
  42.  
  43. 6.  Copy the updated NTDETECT.COM file from the patch floppy to the root 
  44.     location on your hard drive.  
  45.  
  46. 7.  Exit the command window.  
  47.  
  48. 8.  Shutdown Windows NT by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, Shutdown, OK.

  50. Further execution of applications on the system will proceed normally.
