  13. 01. Getting Started
  14. -------------------
  15. All of the programs on this CD have been carefully reviewed and
  16. rated. Any Program with the notation "Try it!" means that it's
  17. a program that does not expire or have usage restrictions.
  18. You should use these programs first. Later, you can go back and
  19. explore similar programs to see what they have to offer.

  21. Consult the help file included with each individual program for
  22. notes and info regarding the program's operation.

  25. 02. Using the Applications Menu
  26. -------------------------------
  27. The WinGear Menu was designed to be very easy to use. You will notice
  28. the Category list on the left side of the screen. Clicking on a category
  29. will display the "contents" of that category in the File List. It
  30. will also provide a brief description of the category in the
  31. Description Box, located at the bottom of the menu.  If you click on
  32. a program in the File List, the description of that program will
  33. now appear in the Description Box. You can read about the program and
  34. decide if it is right for you. You can use the up/down arrows in both
  35. the Category List and the File List to see more entries. Once you find
  36. a program you want to try you can click on the Install button on the
  37. right side of the screen and the program will run or installation
  38. will begin. There are also text files located on this CD, in that case
  39. you can click the View button to view the text document. (When you
  40. click View while a program is selected, the WinGear menu attempts to
  41. display a readme file for that program if it exists. If there is none,
  42. nothing happens.) Clicking on the Help button, brings up this file,
  43. and clicking on Exit exits the program.

  46. 2.5 Installing Onto Your Palm Device
  47. ------------------------------------
  48. After you have selected the program from the WinGear menu and click
  49. install, the program will automatically be unzipped and placed into
  50. the "C:\Palm Apps" folder on your computer.

  52. If you are using PalmPilot Desktop 2.0 or earlier load the Install
  53. Application from the Win95 tray (Click Start, Programs,
  54. PalmPilot Desktop 2.0, PalmPilot Install Tool). You will be prompted
  55. for a file name. Browse to the directory you placed the decompressed
  56. .prc and/or .pdb file(s) (e.g. C:\Palm Apps), highlight the file, and
  57. Click Open, then Click Install. At this point you can repeat the
  58. process by Clicking on Install Another File or you can Click Exit to
  59. exit the PalmPilot Install Tool. Now you need only HotSync your
  60. PalmPilot.

  62. If you are using the PalmPilot 3.0 Desktop the Install Tool is located
  63. on the left side of the Desktop Screen. Click on it and Browse to the
  64. location of your file...and continue as described above.

  66. * Note. Some programs on this CD have their own custom installers.
  67. When this is the case, just follow the directions in the installer
  68. and you should have no problems.

  71. 03. Troubleshooting
  72. -------------------
  73. Q: The menu Install Button does not work!
  74. A: A rare problem on some Win98 machines causes the Install button
  75.    in the menu to not function properly. In this case, the solution
  76.    is to install it by hand. You can still use the menu to browse the
  77.    CD, then when you find a program you want to install, do the
  78.    following. 1. open the Windows Explorer. 2. Change to the CD drive
  79.    that has our CD, 3. Change to the "programs" folder. In here you
  80.    will see all the programs listed. You can now find the program
  81.    you want to install, and run setup.exe or install.exe in the
  82.    programs folder by double-clicking on it.

  84. Q: I clicked Install and nothing happened!
  85. A: You probably have a text file selected. Install only works for
  86.    Programs. Use the View button to view text files.

  88. Q: I clicked View and nothing happened!
  89. A: View only works when (1) the file is a text file, like a faq or a
  90.    technical document, or (2) the program you have selected came with
  91.    a readme.txt file. If no readme file exists, nothing happens when
  92.    you click View.

  94. Q: I got the program on my Palm Device but I can't use it!
  95. A: We often get questions from new users who successfully install files but
  96.    then cannot use them. These are "data" files such as text (Doc),
  97.    images, maps, photos, databases, etc. that require a PalmPilot program
  98.    to use them. If you installed a Doc file you will need either
  99.    AportisDoc or TealDoc to read it. If you installed a JFile database,
  100.    you will need Jfile.
