Miracle of Birth
The First Trimester: Introduction
Discovering that you are pregnant is an exciting moment. It is the start
of a period of wonder and waiting, anticipation and expectation, and above
all, change.
In the first three months of your pregnancy--known as your first
trimester--you will begin to notice physical as well as emotional changes.
The physical changes may, at times, be uncomfortable. The emotional changes
may confuse or even frighten you. But rest assured that, in most instances,
these changes are normal. They are necessary changes that prepare your body
and your mind to nurture the baby that is developing within you.
Indeed, within three months after conception, every organ that your baby
will need throughout her life will have formed. Some, such as her tiny heart
and kidneys, will have already begun to function. Because your first
trimester of pregnancy is such a critical period in your baby's development,
you need to take extra-special care of yourself during this time.
In the following sections, we'll describe how your baby develops during
her first three months in the womb, and we'll discuss the changes that will
occur in your body. To help you nurture yourself and provide your baby with
all that she needs during this time of rapid development, you'll find
information on proper diet, weight gain, prenatal doctor visits, and working
during pregnancy. You'll also find helpful tips to decrease the discomforts
that can accompany the many changes taking place.
