Miracle of Birth
The Fifth Month: Your Changing Body
By now, you probably know that the fluttering that you are feeling in
your abdomen is not caused by indigestion or gas but rather by the movements
of your baby. During the weeks ahead, these movements will become more
pronounced and may even be visible as ripples and bulges that appear on your
abdomen.
You may also begin to notice muscle cramps in your legs, especially
toward the end of the day. This is a very common problem that begins in the
middle of pregnancy and is the result of two very normal changes in your body.
First, your posture has changed dramatically and your back is tipped slightly
backward to compensate for the weight of your enlarging uterus. This puts a
strain on the muscles in your calves and thighs and leads to leg cramps.
Second, muscle cramps may result from an imbalance in the levels of calcium
and phosphorus in your body. Since the baby is constantly taking calcium from
your body to build his growing bones, you may become deficient in calcium.
Calcium deficiency commonly leads to muscle cramps.
During the fifth month of pregnancy, many women find that their gums
bleed easily after they brush their teeth. During pregnancy, the volume of
blood in your body increases significantly. This increase is needed to supply
the baby with vital nutrients and oxygen. As a result of this increase in
your blood volume, blood vessels throughout your body, including those in your
mouth and gums, become engorged. The enlarged blood vessels in your gums are
easily broken with brushing.
Many women also begin to experience sinus congestion during the middle of
pregnancy and may become concerned that they have an infection or an allergy.
This sensation is also caused by the enlargement of blood vessels, this time
with in your nose and sinuses. If you do develop a runny nose or fever with
your nasal congestion, however, consult your doctor.
Two other changes that you may experience during the second trimester are
a marked increase in salivation and an altered sense of taste when eating
certain foods. The reasons for these changes are not known, but they could be
caused by enlarged blood vessels in the tongue and mouth.
By the second trimester, most women have accepted the reality that they
are going to have a baby and are looking forward to delivery day. The thrill
of feeling the baby move in the uterus and of hearing the baby's heartbeat
help to make his existence very real to you. You will now begin to recognize
the baby as a separate person and you may find yourself wondering about your
baby's personality, sex, and appearance. At this time, you may also find that
you need more reassurance and affection from your husband, and you may become
concerned about his safety.
The father may also be feeling a great deal of emotion at this time. He,
too, maybe asking himself "Will I be a good parent?" or "Will I be able to
support my new family?" He may also feel that he is being left out of your
life and may even unconsciously resent the baby. These feelings, too, will
pass.
As a couple, you are sharing many new emotions and may be developing new
needs. But because you both are unique, your reactions may differ from those
of other couples and even from those of one another. It is important for both
of you to be aware of these new emotions and needs and to offer each other
love and support.
