The MiG-29 was first conceived following a consensus among Soviet aviation research personnel that, given the latest trend in the West calling for superior fighter maneuverability in models like the F-14 and F-15, the then-current generation of Soviet fighters was obsolete. It was determined that it would be necessary to develop an entirely new family of fighters to compete with these Western aircraft. Like its later counterpart the Su-27, the MiG-29 represented a great advancement in Soviet fighter technology when it entered service in 1984. It was originally thought to be the rough equivalent of the USAF F-16, but in truth it is larger and more closely resembles the F/A-18 in outward appearance. It carries the latest missiles, is highly maneuverable, and has astounding acceleration. Radar and EW systems are respectable and the Fulcrum even includes a passive air-to-air infrared detection system, allowing attacks on enemies not alerted to danger. Despite its advanced aerodynamics, the MiG-29 still compares unfavorably to Western types in cockpit avionics and pilot-assistance systems. Many controls are still analog and the canopy, while offering the pilot better all-around view than older MiG designs, still doesn't match that afforded by the latest Western fighters. Another potential weakness is the lack of internal fuel, which limits the effective range and flying time of the aircraft.
