<tease>Why?</tease>
<reveal>
<p>If you've sold investments <mdash/> or you're thinking about selling <mdash/> you can figure out how much you made on the sale, and about how much you'll pay in taxes on any <glossary tNum="286960">capital gains</glossary>.</p>

<li>In the <emph># to Sell</emph> column, specify the number of shares sold for each investment.</li>
<li>In the <emph>Sell Price</emph> column, specify the price at which you sold (or would sell) each investment or, if you are connected to the Internet, click <emph>Update prices</emph> in the left pane to use the current price.</li>
<li>Click <emph>Calculate</emph>.</li>
</ol>
<p>The <emph>Results</emph> section shows the total amount raised by the sale, how much you'd pay in taxes, and how much you'd have left over.</p>

<tease>What sell price should I enter?</tease>
<reveal>
<p>If you're just thinking about a sale, and you know that you won't sell an investment until it reaches a certain price, enter that price. Otherwise, it's best to use the current price, because it's so hard to predict a stock's future price. You can get current investment prices by clicking <emph>Update Prices</emph> in the left pane if you are connected to the Internet.</p>
<p>If you've already sold the investment, use your actual selling price.</p>

<tease>Are commissions part of the calculation?</tease>
<reveal>
<p>No. The Capital Gains Estimator looks at the difference between your purchase and sale prices. When you enter actual trades in your portfolio, you can (and should) enter commission information there. Calculations in your portfolio will reflect commissions, if you've entered or downloaded that information for your trades.</p>

<tease>Why don't I see all of my investments listed?</tease>
<reveal>
<p>The Capital Gains Estimator excludes investments that are in retirement accounts or accounts in a dependent's name. Investments in those accounts generally cannot be used for other purposes. It also excludes stock option grants and any investments in accounts you've decided to remove from the Capital Gains Estimator.</p>
