  3. This section covers everything you need to know to set up and start THE
  4. DISCOVERERS on your computer.
  5.  
  6. What do I need?
  7.  
  8. To run THE DISCOVERERS you will need the following:
  9.  
  10. - An IBM or compatible computer with MS-DOS 3.1 or higher.
  11.  
  12. - A color VGA or SVGA monitor.
  13.  
  14. - A CD-ROM drive that supports ISO 9660.
  15.  
  16. - A hard disk with at least two megabytes of disk space free.
  17.  
  18. - Approximately 520 kilobytes of available RAM.
  19.  
  20. - A mouse (recommended); the software can also be run using the keyboard
  21.   alone.
  22.  
  23. - A sound device so that you can hear high-quality digitized sounds: 
  24.  
  25.      -  Sound Blaster or compatible device
  26.      -  Sound Blaster Pro
  27.      -  Sound Blaster 16 
  28.      -  Aria Synthesizer Sound Card
  29.      -  Microsoft Sound 
  30.      -  ATI Stereo FX
  31.      -  Adlib Gold
  32.      -  Pro AudioSpectrum 8
  33.      -  Pro Audio 16
  34.      -  Media Vision ThunderBoard
  35.      -  DigiSpeech PORT-ABLE Sound Plus
  36.      -  Reveal Sound FX Wave 32 SC600 GM
  37.      -  Reveal Sound FX 16 SC400
  38.      -  Gravis Ultrasound
  39.      -  Logitech Soundman 16
  40.      -  Roland Sound Canvas-General Midi

  42. - A printer (optional) so that you can print THE DISCOVERERS text files.
  43.   Any printer that can accept ASCII text directly from your computer port
  44.   will work.
  45.  
  46. - The original THE DISCOVERERS CD-ROM.
  47.  
  48. How do I install the program?
  49.  
  50. Follow these steps to install THE DISCOVERERS on your system:
  51.  
  52. 1. Insert THE DISCOVERERS compact disk into your CD-ROM drive and switch to
  53.    that drive. For example, if your CD-ROM drive is F, type:
  54.  
  55.    F: and press  <Enter>
  56.  
  57. 2. Type:
  58.  
  59.    INSTALL and press <Enter>
  60.  
  61. 3. Follow the messages on the screen until the installation is complete.
  62.  
  63.    The Install program will ask you where you'd like to store the 
  64.    appropriate files on your hard disk, what sound device you have, and 
  65.    whether you'd like to run THE DISCOVERERS under Microsoft Windows.  
  66.    If necessary, your CONFIG.SYS file will be altered so your "FILES"
  67.    statement will =20, and your original CONFIG.SYS file will be saved to 
  68.    CONFIG.BKA.  If you are using the CD-ROM version, you will also be asked 
  69.    whether you want to install the 386 or the 486 version of 
  70.    THE DISCOVERERS.  The 386 version is faster with a smaller movie screen, 
  71.    and may work better on slower 486 PCs.

  73. NOTE: If you have difficulty installing THE DISCOVERERS, turn to "About
  74. installation."  For help with sound setup, see "About sound and sound
  75. devices." 
  76.  
  77. NOTE: THE DISCOVERERS CD has to be in the CD-ROM drive in order for the 
  78. program to run.
  79.  
  80. Running under Windows
  81.  
  82. If you answered YES to the question about running under Microsoft Windows 
  83. when you installed THE DISCOVERERS or another Knowledge Adventure program, 
  84. you have a program group called Knowledge Adventure on your system.  When 
  85. you have installed THE DISCOVERERS for Windows, your Knowledge Adventure 
  86. program group will contain Discoverers, Discoverers Read Me, and Discoverers 
  87. Config icons.  Double-click on the Discoverers icon to start the program.  
  88. Double-click on the Discoverers Read Me icon to see the latest information 
  89. about THE DISCOVERERS.  Double-click on the Discoverers Config icon to edit 
  90. the configuration file.  See "About program defaults" for more information 
  91. about THE DISCOVERERS configuration.

  93. NOTE: You'll find that the following statement has been added to the 
  94. [386ENH] section of your SYSTEM.INI file:
  95.  
  96. DMABUFFERSIZE=150
  97.  
  98. Your original SYSTEM.INI file is saved to the file SYSTEM.BKA.  Your 
  99. original WIN.INI file is saved to the file WIN.BKA.

  101. How do I begin?
  102.  
  103. To start THE DISCOVERERS from the DOS prompt, follow these steps:
  104.  
  105. 1. Change to the directory on your hard drive containing THE DISCOVERERS
  106.    files.  For example, to switch to the C:\DISCOVER directory, type:
  107.  
  108.    C: and press <Enter>
  109.    CD\DISCOVER and press <Enter>
  110.  
  111. 2. Then, to start the program, type:
  112.  
  113.    DISCOVER and press <Enter>
  114.  
  115. NOTE: If you have difficulty starting THE DISCOVERERS, turn to "About
  116. startup." 
  117.
