  40. Part 1: MICROSOFT OUTLOOK EXPRESS
  41. =================================
  42.  
  43. Outlook Express is an Internet standards based e-mail client and news 
  44. reader.
  45.  
  46. To read e-mail with Outlook Express, you must be using a mail system
  47. that uses SMTP and POP3, IMAP, or HTTP protocols. If you don't know 
  48. whether your e-mail system supports Outlook Express, contact your
  49. administrator or your Internet service provider and ask if they support 
  50. POP3, IMAP, or HTTP mail clients.
  51.  
  52. You can use Outlook Express to read newsgroups, or discussion groups,
  53. such as the Usenet, by using NNTP-based news servers. Contact your
  54. Internet service provider (ISP) or network administrator for the
  55. name of the news server that you should use. Outlook Express can also
  56. be used to receive support for a variety of Microsoft products on the
  57. news server msnews.microsoft.com.
  58.  
  59. Outlook Express also includes Windows Address Book version 5.01, which
  60. provides rich contact management capabilities, including the ability to
  61. create groups of contacts and folders to help you organize your e-mail
  62. and personal addresses. The Windows Address Book also provides access to
  63. Internet directories that use LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol).
  64. Internet directories are an easy way to find e-mail or street addresses. 
  65. A number of  popular Internet directories are pre-configured for easy 
  66. access.

  69. Part 2: NEW FEATURES IN THIS RELEASE
  70. ====================================
  71.  
  72. New features in Outlook Express 5.01:
  73.  
  74. - Read receipts.
  75.   You can now request a receipt verifying a that message has been
  76.   displayed on the recipient's machine. However, the recipient must
  77.   support returning receipts in order for you to receive one.
  78.  
  79. - Improved international support.
  80.   Among many international improvements, Outlook Express 5.01 can handle
  81.   reading and saving files containing a large variety of international
  82.   characters in their filenames.
  83.  
  84. - Secure mail (S/MIME) enhancements.
  85.   Outlook Express 5.01 includes support for the S/MIME version 3
  86.   specification and other secure mail enhancements. The new features
  87.   include support for CMS formatted messages, the ability to request
  88.   and return secure receipts, the ability to send and process security
  89.   labels, and the ability to send separate signing and encryption
  90.   certificates.
  91.  
  92. - Integration with the MSN Messenger Service.
  93.   Online contacts are displayed with a special icon in the contacts area
  94.   of Outlook Express 5.01. You must have the MSN Messenger Service
  95.   installed to use this feature.

  97. - New stationery.
  98.   A dozen contemporary stationery designs are included in this version of 
  99.   Outlook Express.
  100.  
  101. New features in Outlook Express 5.0:
  102.  
  103. - Identities for multiple users.
  104.   With the Identity Manager, you can create profiles for different Outlook
  105.   Express users. These profiles are shared by applications such as Outlook 
  106.   Express and Windows Address Book.
  107.  
  108. - Support for Hotmail accounts.
  109.   Outlook Express can now read and manage your Hotmail Inbox and folders, as
  110.   well as synchronize your Hotmail contacts with the contacts in your Windows
  111.   Address Book.
  112.  
  113. - Offline support and message synchronization.
  114.   You can download News and IMAP folders for viewing offline. Actions
  115.   performed offline (such as sending messages and moving messages
  116.   within an IMAP account) will be performed when you go back online.
  117.  
  118. - Contacts pane.
  119.   The contacts in your Windows Address Book are now visible in the main
  120.   Outlook Express window. 
  121.  
  122. - Enhanced message rules.
  123.   Enhanced rules support for more criteria and actions, including blocking
  124.   message senders with a single click, and offering rules for newsgroups.

  126. - Multiple signatures.
  127.   You can create an unlimited number of signatures, and each signature
  128.   can be associated with one or more mail or news accounts.

  130. - Easier to use secure mail (S/MIME).
  131.   Outlook Express automatically finds and associates digital certificates
  132.   installed on your machine with your mail accounts and automatically 
  133.   adds digital certificates that others send you to the Windows Address Book.

  135. - Phone dialer integration.
  136.   It's easy to place a telephone call to a contact in the Windows Address 
  137.   Book using the phone dialer installed on your system.

  139. - IMAP drafts and sent items.
  140.   Outlook Express can store in-progress messages in a server-based Drafts
  141.   folder and store copies of sent messages in a Sent Items folder on the 
  142.   IMAP server.
  143.  
  144. - IMAP folder manager.
  145.   You can customize which IMAP folders are visible or hidden (subscribed or
  146.   unsubscribed) in the folder list.
  147.  
  148. - Advanced Internet directory search.
  149.   Searches against Internet directory (LDAP) servers can be performed with
  150.   additional criteria and logical operators.
  151.  
  152. - Watch conversation and ignore conversation.
  153.   You can designate a news or mail conversation as "watched" so that you
  154.   can see when new messages arrive on that topic. You can also designate a
  155.   conversation as "ignored" so that you will not see future messages on
  156.   that topic.

  158. - HTML source editing.
  159.   You can easily edit the source of an HTML message to include advanced
  160.   HTML tags.
  161.  
  162. - Customizable message filters.
  163.   You can customize what messages are hidden or shown based on more than a
  164.   dozen criteria.

  166. - Stationery wizard.
  167.   It's now even easier to customize HTML stationery, including setting up
  168.   margins, fonts, background images, and colors.
  169.  
  170. - Improved connection management
  171.   Outlook Express 5 can share connection settings with Internet Explorer 5,
  172.   and detects when you have disconnected your phone or have disconnected 
  173.   from a LAN. When a connection is needed, Outlook Express will now connect
  174.   automatically or prompt you.

  177. Part 3: KNOWN ISSUES IN THIS RELEASE
  178. ====================================
  179.  
  180. - The frequency that HTTP mail accounts are checked for new messages is
  181.   determined by the HTTP mail server, not the options set inside of Outlook
  182.   Express. If you want to check for mail on your HTTP mail account more
  183.   frequently, you can press the Send/Receive button on the toolbar.
  184.  
  185. - If you were using the PGP plug-in to Outlook Express 4, you must uninstall it 
  186.   before installing Outlook 5.01. If you installed Outlook Express 5.01 before 
  187.   uninstalling the PGP plug-in, Outlook Express 5.01 will not start. To
  188.   fix, uninstall Outlook Express 5.01, uninstall the PGP plug-in from the 
  189.   Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, and then install Outlook Express 5.01.
  190.  
  191. - Windows Address Book 5.01 files cannot be opened in previous versions of the
  192.   Windows Address Book.
  193.  
  194. - With certain versions of the McAfee VirusScan program running, Outlook Express
  195.   may not shut down properly. To fix, upgrade to McAfee VirusScan 4.0.3 or later.
  196.  
  197. - Your e-mail display name can only contain characters from the default system 
  198.   locale, which is set in Regional settings in the Windows control panel.  E-mail 
  199.   display names, folder names, and contacts not in the system default locale may 
  200.   not display correctly.
  201.  
  202. - If messages from a previous version of Outlook Express were not upgraded
  203.   automatically, you can click on File, then click Import, click Messages, and
  204.   then follow the on-screen instructions to import the messages manually.
  205.  
  206. - When uninstalling Outlook Express 5.01, the messages you have received in 
  207.   Outlook Express 5.01 will remain in the Outlook Express 5.01 message files.
  208.   If you were previously running Outlook Express 4 or Internet Mail and
  209.   News, only the messages you received in those programs will be there 
  210.   after uninstall.
  211.  
  212. - After uninstalling Outlook Express 5.01, you can import messages received
  213.   in Outlook Express 5.01 into Outlook Express 4: In Outlook Express 4, click
  214.   on File, then click Import, click Messages, and then follow the on-screen
  215.   instructions.
  216.  
  217. - S/MIME version 3 features are only available in Outlook Express 5.01 if your 
  218.   operating system (such as Windows 2000) contains updated security files.
  219.  
  220. - A security policy module must be installed on your machine to activate support
  221.   for security labels.
  222.  
  223. - Junk mail filtering is not available in this version of Outlook Express.
  224.  
  225. - In order to print a mail message in Outlook Express 5.01, the message must be
  226.   displayed either in the preview pane or in a separate window.
  227.  
  228. - The Identity Manager provides an easy way to group user settings and
  229.   change users across applications, but it does not provide security for
  230.   messages, application settings, and digital certificates. If you need 
  231.   stronger security, you should use Windows logon profiles to manage 
  232.   user settings.
  233.  
  234. - If you install Outlook 98 after installing Outlook Express 5.01, the shortcut
  235.   to the Microsoft Outlook Newsreader may not work. To fix, open your start
  236.   menu and click Programs, right-click the Microsoft Outlook Newsreader in 
  237.   the list of Programs on the start menu and then click Properties. In the
  238.   Target box, type (exactly as below):
  239.  
  240.   "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /outnews
  241.  
  242. - Under certain circumstances, Outlook 98 in Corporate Workgroup mode may stop 
  243.   functioning after Outlook Express 5.01 is installed. To fix, reinstall Outlook 98.
  244.  
  245. - When importing contacts into Microsoft Phone, the contacts show up in Phone
  246.   but not in the Windows Address Book. The workaround is to click on the File
  247.   menu in Outlook Express, then click Import, and run through the import
  248.   again. Then the contacts will show up in the Address Book.
  249.  
  250. - In order for Outlook Express to work on a dual-boot machine, you must install
  251.   the same version of Outlook Express on both operating systems.
  252.  
  253. - You cannot use Outlook Express to access your e-mail account with 
  254.   any of the following services: MS Mail, cc:Mail, CompuServe, America
  255.   Online (AOL), or Microsoft Exchange Server prior to version 5.
  256.  
  257. - You will not be able to see embedded objects or images sent from
  258.   people using Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, or Windows
  259.   Messaging. File attachments work fine, however.
  260.  
  261. - If you used Internet News for reading newsgroups, any messages
  262.   in your "Posted Items" folder will be moved into the "Sent Items 
  263.   folder when you upgrade to Outlook Express.
  264.  
  265. - Outlook Express shows subscribed IMAP folders only in the
  266.   folder list. It no longer shows all your folders (subscribed and
  267.   unsubscribed).  
  268.  
  269. - The View filter "Show Replies to my Messages" only shows message conversations 
  270.   for which you were the author of the original post. Replies to your 
  271.   replies will not be visible.
  272.  
  273. - Message Rules are not available for IMAP accounts.
  274.  
  275. - If the option is set to encrypt all outgoing messages, any rules with the action
  276.   "Forward" in them will not be executed. 
  277.  
  278. - Messages received without proper character set encoding information can be
  279.   read by selecting the proper encoding from the View menu. However, forwarding
  280.   or replying to these messages after choosing Auto Select will improperly mark
  281.   the character set on the outgoing message. To avoid this problem, select the 
  282.   another encoding when forwarding or replying to messages with no character set
  283.   encoding information.
  284.  
  285. - HTTP mail accounts do not support folder names that contain a forward slash ("/"). 
  286.   If a folder name on an HTTP account contains this character, use a Web browser such
  287.   as Internet Explorer to access your account and rename the folder. Hotmail accounts 
  288.   can be accessed at http://www.hotmail.com/.
  289.

  291. Part 4: TROUBLESHOOTING
  292. =======================
  293.  
  294. - If you are unable to send or receive mail, make sure of the following:
  295.  
  296.   1. The TCP/IP protocol is installed on your computer.
  297.   2. All cables are properly connected to your computer, modem, or LAN.
  298.   3. You have a PPP or SLIP account with your Internet service
  299.      provider.
  300.   4. Your Internet service provider or LAN server supports POP3 or
  301.      IMAP and SMTP.
  302.   5. Your modem communication parameters (baud rate and type of 
  303.      protocol) are set correctly.
  304.  
  305. - If you are unable to read or post news, make sure that you use an account
  306.   name and password for a news server only if it requires them. If you use 
  307.   an account name and password and they are not required, you will not be able
  308.   to connect to the news server.
  309.  
  310. - If you run into a problem, try the Troubleshooting section in 
  311.   online Help:
  312.  
  313.   1. On the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.
  314.   2. Click the "Troubleshooting" topic on the Contents tab.
  315.   3. Click "If you have trouble using Outlook Express."
  316.

  322. - To access the Microsoft peer product support newsgroups, folllow
  323.   these steps:
  324.  
  325.   1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  326.   2. On the News tab, click Add, and then click News
  327.   3. Follow the directions on your screen.
  328.   4. When you are prompted for a server name, type
  329.      msnews.microsoft.com 
  330.  
  331.      If that name isn't found by your Internet service provider, you 
  332.      can type 131.107.3.27 instead.
  333.  
  334.   You do not need to log on to this news server.
  335.  
  336. =======================
  337. Part 5: TIPS AND TRICKS
  338. =======================
  339.  
  340. - To send a message to someone in the Windows Address Book,
  341.   double-click on the name of the contact in the Contacts area.
  342.  
  343. - To edit the source of an HTML message you are writing, on 
  344.   View menu, click Source Edit. Three tabs will appear at the
  345.   bottom of the Window. Click the Source tab to see and change
  346.   the HTML.
  347.  
  348. - To change the New Mail Notification sound, double-click the Sounds
  349.   icon in Control Panel, and select New Mail Notification from the events 
  350.   list. Use the drop-down list in the Sound section to see your choices.
  351.  
  352. - To look up a person's e-mail address when sending mail, use the Check
  353.   Names command, available on the Tools menu or on the New Message toolbar.
  354.   The name will become underlined when the associated address is found.
  355.  
  356. - To send a mail message in Plain Text only (no HTML formatting),
  357.   on the Format menu, click Plain Text. To make Plain Text the default 
  358.   setting for new messages, replies, and forwarded messages, on the Tools
  359.   menu, click Options, click the Send tab, and then select Plain Text under
  360.   Mail Sending Format. (News messages are sent in Plain Text by default, 
  361.   but similarly, this setting can be changed under News Sending Format.)
  362.  
  363. - To customize the toolbar, right-click it and use the menu commands 
  364.   to perform the desired actions.
  365.  
  366. - You can resize the preview pane or the message list by dragging the
  367.   divider between the preview pane and the message list.
  368.  
  369. - You can change how the preview pane splits, or turn it off entirely,
  370.   by clicking the View menu, clicking Layout, and then changing the options
  371.   in the dialog box.
  372.  
  373. - To view the e-mail address of someone who has sent you a message,
  374.   double-click the message to open it, then double-click the author's 
  375.   name in the From field. You can also add this person to your Address
  376.   Book by right-clicking the name, and then clicking Add To Address 
  377.   Book.
  378.  
  379. - To view responses to a particular message in a newsgroup, click the
  380.   plus sign (+) next to the message. The responses appear indented
  381.   below it.
  382.  
  383. - In mail, you can leave a copy of your messages on the server. To set
  384.   this option, on the Tools menu, click Accounts. Select the mail account
  385.   you want to modify, and then click Properties. Click the Advanced tab, 
  386.   and then check the Leave A Copy Of Messages On Server check box.
  387.  
  388. - You can search for newsgroups that contain specific words in their 
  389.   names. To do this:
  390.  
  391.   1. On the Tools menu, click Newsgroups. 
  392.   2. In the "Display newsgroups which contain" box, enter the words
  393.      separated by a space.
  394.  
  395.   You can also search newsgroup descriptions. If you cannot see the
  396.   descriptions, on the Tools menu click Accounts. Select the news account
  397.   you want to modify, click Properties, and then click the Advanced tab. 
  398.   Next, check the Use Newsgroup Descriptions check box.á Click the Tools
  399.   menu again, and then click Newsgroups. In the Newsgroups window, click 
  400.   the "Reset List" button.
  401.  
  402. - To reorder columns, you can drag and drop column headings. Columns
  403.   can be resized by dragging the right edge of the column header. 
  404.  
  405. - To hang up, choose Work Offline from the File menu and click Yes when
  406.   asked if you want to hang up.
  407.  
  408. - To make Outlook Express connect and check mail on a regular interval,
  409.   make sure the option to "Send and receive messages every X minutes" is 
  410.   enabled and change "If my computer is not connected at this time" to 
  411.   "Always Connect" or "Connect if Work Offline is not checked." These
  412.   settings are on the General tab in Options available in the Tools menu.
  413.  
  414. - If any of your mail or news accounts requires you to use a specific
  415.   ISP connection, enable the option to "Always connect to this account
  416.   using" and select the appropriate account. This option is available in
  417.   the Connection tab in the Properties of each account. This option is
  418.   mainly used by people who use multiple connections, such as LAN and a 
  419.   dial-up connection or two dial-up connections.
  420.  
  421. - To check for new messages at start up, enable the option to "Send and 
  422.   receive messages every X minutes" on the General tab in Options and make 
  423.   sure that each account you want to check has the option to "Include this 
  424.   account in Send and Receive All" enabled on the General tab in the 
  425.   Properties of each account. The option "At Start up, ask me if I would 
  426.   like to connect" only initiates a connection. It does not check for mail.
  427.   
  428. - The Dial-up Connection option "At Start up, ask me if I would like to 
  429.   connect" will always prompt you to dial a modem at start up even if a
  430.   LAN connection exists. If you primarily use LAN, turn off this option.
  431.  
  432. - To disable the "Connect automatically" behavior for any of your dial-up
  433.   accounts, click Cancel while connecting to the account. This will bring
  434.   up the Dial-up Connection window and allow you to uncheck the "Connect 
  435.   automatically" option.
  436.  
  437. - If you are running Outlook Express on Windows NT and you need to add
  438.   support for a different language, double-click the Keyboard icon in
  439.   Control Panel, and then click Add. Follow the instructions on your
  440.   screen. This installs the appropriate NLS (National Language
  441.   Support) files. You do not have to use the associated keyboard
  442.   layout.
