  1. WHAT IS PHONEDAY?

  4. OFTEL, the Government's telecommunications regulator, has decided that the UK 
  5. area codes should be changed to meet the increasing demand for new codes and 
  6. numbers.
  7.  
  8. The changes will take place at 1am on the morning of 16 April 1996 - Phoneday.
  9.  
  10. From that day, the number 1 will be inserted after the initial 0 in the UK
  11. area codes. So, for example, the code for Manchester, 061, will become 0161.

  13. At the same time, five cities that have a particularly urgent need for more
  14. telephone numbers will be given completely new codes and a digit will be
  15. inserted before each local number.

  17. The new codes and numbers for each city are:
  18.  
  19.         Leeds 0532 XXXXXX becomes 0113 2XX XXXX
  20.         Sheffield 0742 XXXXXX becomes 0114 2XX XXXX
  21.         Nottingham 0602 XXXXXX becomes 0115 9XX XXXX
  22.         Leicester 0533 XXXXXX becomes 0116 2XX XXXX
  23.         Bristol 0272 XXXXXX becomes 0117 9XX XXXX

  25. Certain codes, such as those for `premium rate' services (0898 etc.), and
  26. those for mobile phones do not change.
  27.  
  28. Furthermore, the international code changes from 010 to 00 in order to
  29. harmonise this across Europe.

  31. The Psion Phoneday Tools are a set of three applications designed to
  32. make the transition as easy as possible.  They're also meant to be
  33. self-explanatory, so just install them and you're well away.
