TouchType v1.0
by
Ralph J. Whittaker, Jr.
Colorado Springs Area Computer (CSAC)
This program is designed to TEACH the beginning typist how
to TOUCH TYPE. It is designed in such a manner that even a
5 year old can learn how to TouchType.
TOUCH TYPING is the method preferred by the professionals.
It allows total freedom of creative thought and maximum
speed. The accomplished TouchTypist can literally close
their eyes and, to coin a phrase, "let their fingers do the
walking". In this age-of-the-computer virtually every one
will soon be using a keyboard.
If you like this program or if it helps you or one of your
loved ones to become a better typist, send five bucks
($5.00) to:

INSTALLATION
TouchType was written on an IBM CLONE with a CGA card and a
color monitor. It has been tested on composite monitors
(both green and amber) and works fine... If you run this
program on a system with a Monochrome monitor you may have
to issue the MODE BW80 directive. Insure that MODE.COM is
pathed to before you issue this directive.
Simply copy all files in the archive into a subdirectory (or
onto a floppy) and start the program by typing TTYPE <ENTER>.
AN INTRODUCTION TO TOUCHTYPING
What is TouchTyping? TouchTyping is a method of typing
where by your fingers rest on a set of keys called the
HOME ROW
Each finger is responsible for striking only certain keys,
i.e. The little finger on the left hand strikes ONLY the !,
1, Q, A, Z, tab, and left shift. It NEVER strikes any other
key. The fingers are assigned home row keys as follows:
LEFT HAND RIGHT HAND
1. little finger = A little finger = ;
2. ring finger = S ring finger = L
3. middle finger = D middle finger = K
4. index finger = F index finger = J
right thumb = space bar
This method of typing is very easy to learn. In just a
short time, with repetitive practice, your fingers will
learn the location of every key. You will soon be able to
type without hunting for each key.
The program will load any ASCII file with an .LSN extension
for practice. Included in the archive are several files to
practice on. You should first practice with LESSON1 then
progress on to LESSON2, etc. These lessons are designed to
get your fingers use to the keys they are responsible for.
When you finish with these instructions you will be
presented with a list of files that may be used for
practice. Simply move the highlighted bar with the up/down
arrow keys to the file you want to use for practice. Then
press ENTER.
A couple of things happen after you press ENTER. First the
file you chose is read into memory. Next, a picture of the
keyboard, a timer, and a row of text are placed on screen.
The function of the timer is easy to figure out. The
keyboard is pretty straight forward too. Examine the
keyboard and notice that around the HOME ROW letters are
double boxes. This is to help you place your fingers
properly. REMEMBER - Your fingers should always be in these
double boxes. When you have to move one to strike a key it
should quickly return to its home position. The keyboard is
proportionally drawn so that it should be a close match to
your keyboard.
Now look at the four rows of text near the top of the
screen. The second row of text will be referred as the
"typing row". Notice that, on the typing row, either a
letter is in high intensity or you see a cursor before or
between letters. This indicates which letter you are
supposed to strike next and, of course, if the cursor is
displayed the space bar should be struck with the right
thumb. As a further aid, the location of the letter is
flashing on the keyboard below. This allows you to easily
locate the letter on the keyboard. Notice also that one of
the HOME ROW boxes has thick vertical bars on each side of
the letter. This is to show you which finger you are
supposed to use to strike the flashing letter.
The idea is to strike the flashing letter with the finger
that is resting on the key indicated by the box with thick
vertical bars, then quickly move the finger back into its
home key. Repeated practice will TEACH your fingers which
keys they are supposed to strike, where their letters are,
and where their HOME ROW position is. It is very important
that your fingers move back to their home row position after
striking each letter. The HOME ROW positions are the
reference points that your fingers will use when learning
where the keys are located.
THE MENU
Pressing the <ESC> key will give a Menu on the bottom line
of the screen. This menu contains 5 options.
<Q>uit <C>ontinue <L>oad <R>eport <B>eeps
Striking the <ESC> key will stop the clock at the top of the
screen Choosing the <Q>uit option returns you to the DOS
prompt.
The <C>ontinue option will return you to your typing and
restart the clock.
The <L>oad option presents you with a list of files that can
be used type TouchType. Simply use the arrow keys to move
the highlight to the file you want to use then press
<ENTER>.
<R>eport will show your report card. This report contains
information you may be interested in after you become
proficient with the keyboard. It shows your speed, number
of errors, which letters you missed, etc.
<B>eeps will turn the beeping off. You could make mistakes
in silence! After striking the <B> selection you must
strike either 1 or 2 to turn the beep on or off.
MAKING UP A PRACTICE FILE
TouchType can use any ASCII file as a practice file. The
maximum length any line in the practice file can be is 70
characters. If any line is longer it will be cut off at 70
characters.
If you want a title in the typing window for your practice file
all you need to do is place a carrot (^) in the first column
of the first line of the file. The text on that line will
now be the title of the window, i.e. ^ MY PRACTICE FILE
Placing the carrot (^) in the first column of the last line
of the file, with no trailing characters, causes the message
"END OF FILE" to appear when the last line of the file is on
the typing line.
Practice files can be created with any ASCII editor. You
can also use any existing ASCII file and simply rename it
with the .LSN extension. For example, suppose I wanted to
practice on a .DOC file that came with a public domain
program. I would just rename the .DOC file to have a .LSN
extension, i.e. REN FILENAME.DOC FILENAME.LSN.
TouchType is capable of handling an ASCII file that is
approximately 1000 lines long. This should be more than
adequate for the average beginner.
THE SCREEN
The keyboard you see below is designed to show the novice
TouchTypist WHERE the keys are. As you can see, the home
row keys have double boxes around them. Your fingers should
always remain on these keys! When you remove a finger from
a Home Row key to strike another key then you should
immediately return the finger to the home row key it belongs
on. As your knowledge of the keyboard grows and your speed
increases this will not always be necessary.
On the displayed keyboard you will see a letter flashing.
This letter will also be displayed in high intensity white
on the type line (The Type Line is the second line in the
window). At this time you will also see one of the Home Row
Keys with a wider vertical border than the rest. The finger
resting on this key is the proper finger to strike the
flashing letter with. TRY TO MOVE YOUR FINGER TO THE
FLASHING LETTER, STRIKE IT, AND RETURN WITHOUT LOOKING AT
THE KEYBOARD.
On the typing line, the cursor is displayed as an underline.
This underline will appear in all places on the typing line
that a SPACE should be typed. The space bar is tapped with
your right thumb.
I hope you enjoy this program,
Ralph
