  1. No way.  You got part of the way√ë subtracting the 5 from both sides√ë and then you stopped.  You want x by itself, not 3x.  How do you get it?  Well, if to get rid of an added 5 you subtract 5, then to get rid of a multiplied 3 you must divide by 3.
