To find a solution that works, just substitute in, though of course you could also solve for x. Substituting in, only x = 3 works. Solving for x, subtract 3x from both sides gives you 2x - 2 = 4; adding 2 to both sides gives you 2x = 6. Then divide both sides by 2, and you’ve got x = 3 all over again.
