DThe first version of the EPOC shell uses special bytes at the start of files to identify their type, the icon to use for them, and how to open them. Since text files do not have this special infomation in their headers, the EPOC shell gives them an icon...
... and refuses to upen them. DSTEDIT Files do not contain text files, nor does it import/export them like word. DSTEDIT files contain links to other text files. These text files are known as attached files. The EPOC shell shows DSTEDIT with the icon...
... which is supposed to represent a group of text files tied together with string.
When you open a DSTEDIT file you are in effect opening a group of attached files. You can switch between these attached files, edit and save them. DSTEDIT files can be used to manage groups of C++ files, HTML files etc. Alternativly just one file can be attached, in which case DSTEDIT acts like a alias or shortcut to that file. This is usefull when using DSTEDIT as a reader for text files that would otherwise need to be loaded into the Word app.

AAIf an entire line is selected or the selection contains more than one line then pressing TAB will indent the selected lines by adding a TAB character to the start of each line. If the Shit key is pressed with the TAB key then the first TAB if any will be removed from the start of each selected line (it will un indent).
BClicking the text file name label in the toolbar...
... will open a list of attached files...
... from here files can be selected for editing and single or several files can have their changes saved. Files can be also attached (crtl+N or ctrl+O) or detached (Ctrl+D)
Note that the files are listed with the most recently used files at the top of the list. Also to save memory only modified files and the current file are held in memory, so switching to an un mdified file may take a moment as the file is read into memory.
Alternatively while holding the ctrl keydown, tap the tab key, this will pop up the list of attached files and step through the selection each time the tab key is pressed, releasing the ctrl key will switch to the selected file.

lAPressing Ctrl+L or selecting 'Line Prefix' from the 'tools' menu gives a dialog that will add or remove a given prefix from the selected lines.
This can be used to comment out code ie // may be added to the start of lines in C++ to comment them out. Similerly 'REM' or ' could be added to a BASIC program. This could also be used to add basic bulliting to a list.
AThe preference dialog allows you to set prefences for the current text group.
You can select which character will be inserted when the shift key is held down when the space key is used. This can be a normal space, a non breaking hard space, or an underscore (to make typing SOME_VARIABLE_NAME easier).
You can also selct the character sequence used to terminate lines when modified text files are saved by DSTEdit.
BTo edit a text file in DSTEDIT it must first be attached to the current group. The menu command to do this 'Attach text file(s)' under the 'group' menu. Alternatively Ctrl+N or Ctrl+O can be used from the keyboard. Select the appropriate page/tab to create & attach a new text file, attach an existing file, or get DSTEDIT to attach all the files in the named directory that appear to be text files.
Files can not be attached if they are already attached to this group, also if the file has EPOC UID data at the start, (ie word/agenda/data files) then the file can not be attached. If the file contains binary data (ie not true 7bit text) then DSTEDIT will prompt for confirmation.

AThe find button and combo box at the bottom of the display...
...can be used to search for text in the current file. The combo box remembers recent searches to save having to retype them.
If you want to search backwards hold the shift key when you click the find button.
Alternatively Ctrl+F copies the current selection to the combobox and searches for the next occourance. Ctrl+J repeats the last search. Hold the shift key down at te same time to reverse the searches.

Using the keyboard
The flashing caret can be moved around the text with the arrow keys, PgUp, PgDown, Home & End. If the Ctrl key is pressed while using the left/right arrow keys then the caret will move to the start/end of the next/revious word.
If the shift key is held while moving the caret then the text will be selected.
ng the stylus
taping the stylus on the text will position the text at the nearest character, holding shift while clicking will extenf the selection from the current 'anchor' point to the new caret position. Alternatively text can be seleted by dragging over it. If the Ctrl key is held while selecting text with the pen, DSTEDIT will only select whole words.

CLines can be joined and split by selecting the Layout command from the tools menu, or by pressing ctrl+shift+y.
This will join lines of text into paragraphs and then optionally re-split these lines so that the lines appear to wrap on of before a specified column (default 80).
The type of paragraph selected control how paragraphs are recognised and joined. Normal means that paragraphs are successive lines of text that all have the same indent or spacing at their start. Crown means that the first line can have a different indent, but that 2nd and successive lines should have the same indent. Tagged means that the first line must have a different indent. Split only means that each line is treated as a separate paragraph and lines are not joined.
If the join only check box is checked then the lines will not be wrapped at the nth column
If the uniform spacing checkbox is checked then multiple spaces will be removed to leave single spaces between words.

You can set a'bookmark' by pressing ctrl+shift and one of the number keys 0..9. DSTEDIT will remember the curent file and selection/position. Later pressing Ctl and that number key will select that file and position.

Pressing Ctrl+U will convert the current selection to upper case, pressing Ctrl+Shift+U will convert the current selection to lower case.
Text can be replaced by pressing the replace button...
