Extracting file(s) from an archive is one of this program's main uses. This allows you (for instance) to download an archive file from an author's homepage with the Web application, and then unzip and install the program without using a PC.
Once you have opened an existing archive, select the file or files you wish to extract (see Selecting files) and then use either Ctrl+X or (depending on how you have the Preferences set) Enter or a double tap, or the Extract button on the Toolbar.
You will then be offered a simple file selector which will allow you to specify the folder into which the selected file(s) will be extracted. If you wish to extract them into a new folder which does not currently exist, simply tap on Browse use the left hand side of the 'Browse window' to move to the location where you wish the folder to be created, tap on New folder and then enter the name of the folder. Tap OK to return to the Extract dialog.
If you tick the Restore folders option on this dialog, the program will automatically extract the files according to any path details stored in the archive. If the stored paths do not exist on your machine, they will be created for you. If no paths are stored in the archive, the selected files will simply be extracted into the folder you specified.
If any of the files you attempt to extract are password protected, you will be prompted for the password. You will not be able to extract a protected file until the correct password has been entered.
This program also allows you to remove files which are contained inside an archive.
To delete a file from the current archive, select the file or files you wish to delete (see Selecting files) and then either press Ctrl+D or the Del key.
You will then be asked to confirm that you really do wish to remove the files from the archive.

Once you have created a new archive or have opened an existing one, you will be able to add files to it. These files can either be compressed or stored, and there are several other options available too.
To add files, tap Add on the Toolbar, or press Ctrl+F. You will then be offered a dialog with 3 pages.

This allows you to select which files are to be added to the archive. Use the standard EPOC file selector to add single files, or open up the file list (Tab key or double tap with the pen) and then use Shift and a tap to select a range of files, or Ctrl and a tap to select multiple individual files.
Tick Add all to add all the files in the current folder to the archive.
Options
This page allows you to set some of the basic options available when adding files. It has 3 check boxes and one choice list:
Recurse
Folder info
File comment
Archive comment
Recurse will search the source folder for any subfolders. If any are found, they too will be searched for files and more subfolders, and so on. All files found will be added to the archive.
When using Recurse, you can make sure details about the location of files are stored in the archive by using the Folder info option:-
None will store no information.
If set to Relative, only relative information is stored. e.g. if you were zipping C:\Documents\Accounts\ and all subfolders, then the paths stored would be relative to that - i.e. starting from C:\Documents\Accounts. Thus the contents of the folder C:\Documents\Accounts\April\ would be stored with a path of \April.
With this option set to Relative & current, the paths stored are still relative, but starting from the current folder. So, in the above example, the contents of C:\Documents\Accounts\April\ would be stored with a path of \Accounts\April\.
And the Full option will ensure full, absolute path names are stored. In this case, the contents of C:\Documents\Accounts\April\ would be stored with a path of \Documents\Accounts\April\.
File comment allows you to add a brief (up to 255 characters) comment to each file that is added to the archive. See Archive & file comments.
Archive comment allows you to add a longer comment to the whole of the archive. Typically, this may be contact details or a memo about the archive's contents. See Archive & file comments.
Advanced
This final page allows you to select some more advanced options for adding files. These are:
Move files
Add password
Compression
Move files will delete the selected file(s) from your machine once they have been successfully added to the archive.
Add password will encrypt each file that you add to that archive. Anyone wishing to extract the files will need to supply the correct password to do so.
Finally, Compression allows you to select how the files will be added to the archive. It has several settings:
Maximum (slowest)
Normal
Less (fast)
Minimal (very fast)
None (store)
Each of these are pretty self-explanatory. They allow you to find a balance between the time taken to add the files, and the amount of compression achieved. The Normal setting should be fine for most archives, but if you have highly compressible files (like text files) or want to make the archive as small as possible, Maximum may be useful. If you just wish to keep several files inside one file to make storage easier, then Store may be the most suitable setting.
The program supports two archive types - Standard Zip and Zip with icon.
You can change the type of an archive by simply switching between the two options on the Archive type cascade on the File menu.
A Standard Zip is exactly the same as an archive created on PC. The only disadvantage of these on EPOC machines is that the System screen does not recognise them as belonging to RMRZip, and so gives them a default 'question mark' icon. You can still launch them from System by pressing Enter on the file name or double tapping it but the files are not as easy to identify without an icon.
If you opt to make the file a Zip with icon, RMRZip will add a few extra bytes of information to the start of the archive. This allows the System screen to identify the archive as belonging to RMRZip and give it the proper icon. The archive will still be fully compatible with PC-based programs too, except some may warn you that there is extra information stored.
The program provides you with the option to change between the two types in order to provide maximum flexibility and let you work the way you want. An option is also available in Preferences which allows you to set the default type to the one you use most.
The Preferences options (Ctrl+K) affect how the program works. (See the View preferences topic for options which affect how the program looks and displays information).
Using Preferences you can change:
Where the program returns to after launching files
The action which results when you press Enter or double tap on a file name
The default archive type
If the Return to option is set to 'System' then after you have launched a file and have closed the associated application you will be returned to the System screen. If it is set to 'RMRZip' you will be returned to RMRZip itself.
To provide flexibility in the way the program operates you can use the Enter key & double tap action option to govern which function is invoked when you press Enter or tap twice on a file name. If you find that you normally want to extract files from archives more often than you want to launch them, set this option to 'Extract file', and vice versa.
Finally, the Default archive type option will determine what type of archive is created when you create a new RMRZip file from System or use the 'Create new archive' option on the File menu inside RMRZip itself. If you wish to create 'standard' files then set this to 'Standard Zip'. If you want to create files which show the RMRZip icon from the System screen set this to 'Zip with icon'. For more details see the Archive types topic.

The View preferences options (Shift+Ctrl+K) affect how the program looks and displays information. (See the Preferences topic for options which affect how the program actually works).
The available settings are arranged into 3 pages on the View preferences dialog:

Vertical scroll bar
Horizontal scroll bar
File sizes in
Date column
The Grid lines option allows you to specify in which direction grid lines are drawn in the main screen, these can help to visually separate the file names.
Both of the scroll bar options let you set whether scroll bars appear always, never or automatically. If you set these to Off (i.e. so they never appear) you will have to use the keyboard to navigate.
File sizes in allows you to change how file sizes are displayed in the Size column of the screen. The available options are Bytes, Kilobytes and Megabytes.
Finally, using the Date column option you can set the program to display either the Time & date of files and folders, or Date only inside the Date column of the panel.
Columns
With this page you can 'fine tune' the columns which are shown on screen. These columns hold various data about the files inside the archive, such as name, date, attributes, etc.
You can mark any of the various columns visible or invisible so that the panel is showing only the information you really want. You can also set the width of all visible columns.
To do this, select the name of the column you wish to change using the Column choice box. Then move down and ensure Calculate width is set to Fixed. You will then be able to enter your desired width (in characters) inside the Width box.
Note: The Name column cannot be made invisible. It is the default column, and is therefore always on show.
Tip: Column widths can also be resized on screen by dragging the right hand corner of the appropriate column title area.
Misc.
There is only one option on this page, and it detrmines whether RMRZip shows icons for files inside archives or not.
If you check this option RMRZip will scan all your installed applications when it first starts up and retrieve their icons. If any of the files inside the archive belong to a recognised application the icon will be shown next to the file.
Note: If you have a lot of applications installed, starting RMRZip will be significantly slower with this feature enabled.

Launching file(s) from an archive is a useful new feature of the program. This allows you (for instance) to create an archive of not so commonly used documents and then view and/or edit them without having to extract and re-add them yourself.
Once you have opened an existing archive, select the file or files you wish to launch (see Selecting files) and then use either Ctrl+U or (depending on how you have the Preferences set) Enter or a double tap, or the Launch button on the Toolbar.
The program will then extract a temporary copy of the file. If the file is of a type which EPOC can handle, it will then be launched with the corresponding application - e.g. if you launch a Word file, the Word application will be opened with the temporary copy of the file. If the file is not recognised by EPOC, you will be returned to RMRZip without the file being launched.
If you launch a file for an application which allows you to edit files (e.g. Word, Sheet, RMRTask, etc.) and wish to change the file you are viewing, this is no problem. Simply edit the document as you would any other. When you are done, close the application as normal, and RMRZip should become the active program after a few seconds. You will be prompted with a dialog box telling you the file has changed, and asking if you want to add the new file to the archive. If you select Yes then the new file will be added to the archive and the new copy will replace the old one. If you select No the temporary file well be deleted and any changes will be lost.
Tip: You can also run applications contained within an archive file using this feature. However, be aware that most EPOC applications do not consist of only one file, so many may not run reliably if they cannot 'find' these other files.
As with Extracting files, if any of the files you attempt to launch are password protected, you will be prompted for the password. You will not be able to launch a protected file until the correct password has been entered.
When you add files to an archive, the Options page of the Add files dialog box provides 2 options to let you add a comment to each file and the whole archive. When you have entered such comments, you will almost certainly want to edit them at some point in time. And if you have downloaded an archive using Web, then you may want to look at or edit the comment of that archive too.
To allow for this, 2 built in editors are provided, both of which can be found under the More section of the Edit menu:
File comment (Shift+Ctrl+F)
This allows you to edit the individual comments for each file. Simply select the file(s) which have comments you wish to edit (see Selecting files) and you will be given an edit box for each one.
If no comment was supplied for a file when it was first added to the archive, this option can be used to give files a comment at any time, as well as for editing existing comments.
Archive comment (Shift+Ctrl+O)
By selecting this option, you can:
add a comment to an archive which currently has no comment
edit the current comment of an archive.
You will be given a simple text entry dialog in which you can enter/edit the archive's comment. Press Esc to cancel and discard any changes you have made to the comment, or Ctrl+D to save any changes to the comment.
Each of the edit/entry dialogs supports Cut, Copy and Paste, so you can paste a pre-written comment from e.g. Word with Ctrl+V.
Apart from the features covered in their own topics, several other useful functions are provided too. These include:
Sort by (Ctrl+I)
This item on the Tools menu will bring up a dialog with one choice list and two radio buttons. Using these, you can sort files in an archive by:
Ratio
Packed
Attr.
Folder
Comment
and in Ascending or Descending order (depending on which of the Order radio buttons you have selected).
Tip: A faster way of changing the order in which files are sorted is to simply tap on the column titles of the main display. For example, to sort files by date in ascending order tap once on the Date column heading. To sort by date in descending order, tap twice on the Date heading.
Test archive (Shift+Ctrl+T)
This function will test the currently opened archive for errors and give you a report at the end.
Archive information (Shift+Ctrl+J)
Selecting this option will give you a dialog box which summarises some useful details about the current archive.
Tip: You can also activate this function by tapping on the top title bar of the main screen.
Close archive (Ctrl+L)
This will close the archive you currently have open. Use this option if you wish to leave the program running, but don't want to leave an archive open in case files are deleted/extracted/added by accident or by someone else.
Tip: You can also close an archive by tapping on the
button in the top right of the screen. If no archive is open, tapping this button will close the program.

It is compatible with PKZip v2.04g (PKWARE) for MS-DOS, Windows, UNIX, OS/2, and VMS systems, and also ZIP 2.0.1 (Info-ZIP) for MS-DOS and Windows. It is the only dedicated program to provide effective and fast zip compression and decompression for EPOC machines.

Double tap archive files from the System shell to open them.

This program offers several methods of selecting files within an archive. Once you have selected a file or files, you can then perform operations on them all (e.g. Extract).
Selected files are marked with a tick in the left most column on screen.
Select all (Ctrl+A)
This option which appears on the Edit menu will select all the files in an archive.
Tip: You can also select all the files in an archive by tapping on the title area of the left most column.
Using the pen
You can use the pen on it's own to select files by simply tapping once in the left most column next to the name of the file you wish to select. As stated above, once the file is selected it will have a tick next to it.
This method allows you to select any number of files in any order.
Using the pen and keys
The pen combined with the Shift key allows you to select a block of files in one go.
Holding down Shift and tapping on a file name will select it. If you keep Shift depressed and tap on another file name that file and all of the files in between the one you tapped first and the one you tapped last will be selected.
Using the keyboard
You can move about the list of file names with the arrow keys. The down arrow will move the cursor down, and the up arrow will move the cursor up. The left and right arrow keys will scroll the screen left and right if there is data to be seen (e.g. more text of a folder path or file comment).
If you hold down Shift whilst moving the cursor with the arrow keys, multiple files will be selected.
Tip: Two other options which are useful for selecting files can both be found on the Edit menu. Clear all selections will remove and selections you have made. Invert selection will reverse the status of any selections - i.e. any files which are currently selected will have their selection removed, and any files which are not currently selected will become selected.
