When I first got my Psion Series 5 I wrote a Program called Liquid that was basically a little bit of screen-candy. What I soon realised in writing Liquid was that the graphical abilities of the S5 were far more advanced than the standard Sketch Application gave tell. Then I wrote PicSee and couldn
t believe the speed and ease at which large 16 colour bitmaps and animations were handled. Still feeling disappointment with Sketch and its Measly tools and Measly 4 colours I decided that something had to be done. And so I began to write Photo5.
I wanted an application that could use all of the standard drawing tools found in pain packages but I also wanted to include filters as found in programs like PhotoShop and PhotoPaint. After three months of messing around I started to get somewhere. Many People tried out these early and beta versions and offered suggestions as to improvements. One of the most common was that Photo5 was very un-psion-like and that this should be changed
add a standard toolbar etc. I thought about this but decided that the Standard Psion applications are based on a format that was designed for word-processing and data applications.. not for what I wanted; a Paint program close in look and functionality to the BIG BOYS found on PC`s.
This is why Photo5 has a non-standard interface. Perhaps if you have never used a paint program then things will seem a bit weird, but trust me
let your intuitions catch up and you will be glad of the Dynamic Toolbars and Pop-Bars and the absence of obtrusive Psion-style features.

The Plugin Concept: I wanted a way to add features to Photo5 that didn
t require re-releasing the main App every week. I also wanted others to have the ability to write code for Photo5 that could be incorporated into the program without messing around with awkward parallel development. To this end I designed Photo5 to use Plugins which were based around a simple template that anyone could use and that would be picked-up by Photo5 without any need for program modification.
These are many plugins available for Photo5 and many more in development both by myself and third parties. Plugings can be downloaded from the Photo5 page on SALT.
The Clip Image and the Main Image
Photo5 uses two different images to work on. These are the Clip Image and the Main Image. The Main image occupies the main window and it is that which is drawn upon by the tools in the toolbar. If you like think of it as the image that is going to be the final product of your drawing. The Main Image cannot be moved or pasted. The Clip Image is the image which is created after you have selected an area of the Main Image. This has its own window and can be moved, pasted onto the Main Image patterned onto the Main Image and so forth. It is important that you understand this distinction as it forms the basis of all work performed with Photo5.
Graphics Modes:
Photo5 makes extensive use of the idea of Graphics Modes. The effect how Photo5 will replace one set of pixels with another set. There are 4 graphics modes these are:
(1) Set: Whereby all pixels that have colour (i.e. not White) are mapped.
(2) Clear: All white Pixels and no Coloured Pixels are mapped.
(3) Inverted: All pixels are mapped to their inverse colour.
(4) Replace: All pixels, white and coloured are mapped.
When Photo5 is loaded you will be met with a blank screen that has at the bottom a toolbar made up of eleven icons. If you draw on the screen a thin black line will be shown. This is the standard brush, in the default colour(Black) and with the default pen size(6 pixels). If you tap on the colour bar at the bottom right of the screen you will see that you can select a different colour. Now by drawing on the screen the brush will paint in the colour you selected. Next to the colour bar is a Brush Icon. Click on this and drag it upwards. A window will appear that has an inverted triangle in it. This window is termed a Pop-Bar. Most icons have Pop-Bars; they allow you to change the common option for that tool. In the case of the Brush Icon the Pop-Bar changes the Brush Size of the brush. If you move it right to the top and release the pen the Pop-Bar will disappear and the new, wider, brush size will be selected. Drawing on the window now you will see that the brush is much thicker.
The chances are that you have just drawn a mess of squiggles on the screen. Lets clear the screen. To do this you need to use the Eraser tool; the fourth icon from the right. If you just click on it then the pen will be set to clear any area you draw onto. This is one way. Another way is to use the Eraser's Pop-Bar. Bring up the Eraser
s Pop-Bar and you will see a white "button". If you select this the entire image will be cleared. Before we look at the Tool-bar in detail, in section two, there are a few more places we should visit on the "tour".
If you now draw a shape on the screen and then click on the select icon (The scissors) you will be ready to select an area of your shape. When you are in the select mode Photo5 is waiting for you to start your selection. To do this you have to touch the screen at the top-left corner of the area you would like to select. In this manual this first touch is termed "pen-down". After pen-down drag down and to the right, you will see a rectangle outline following your pen; this is indicating the area you are going to select. When you are happy with the indicated region remove the pen
s tip from the screen; this is termed "pen-up". It will look at first as though nothing has happened, this is because the area you have selected is sitting on top of the image. Tap the side panel of Psion`s window that has a pair of scissors on it (above the infra-red panel). The area you selected will now be highlighted (this feature is just to show you where the selected image is if it gets lost!!). Now, click on the selected image, what is termed the Clip Image, and keep the pen down but move it around the screen. The Clip Image will follow the pen around. Take the pen from the screen and the Clip Image will stay where you left it. You can also move the clip image with the arrow keys. The Clip Image will just stay where it is until: you select another clip image, remove the clip image or close the program. If you now click on the clipboard icon on the tool-bar and bring up it`s Pop-Bar you will see for icons. Lets not worry what they mean for the moment, just select the bottom of these icons and then pen-up. Now drag the Clip Image away and you will see that it has been pasted onto the Main Image. Move it some place else and paste it again. What fun!!
Lets try something different. Press the menu key or the Psion`s menu side panel and Photo5`s menus will be called up. Go to the Transform menu and select the Mirror option. Choose, say, right in left, from the dialog and let it rip. One of the images will have it`s right half mirrored in its left half. I say one of the images because, as you can guess, there are two images on the screen; the Clip Image and the Main Image. If you go to the transform menu again you will see at the bottom a check-box that says Clip Image. If this is checked then all transformations will be acted upon the Clip Image, otherwise they will be acted upon the Main Image. You can tick/untick the check-box to toggle these options.
Finally in this tour lets try out a filter. Go to the filters menu and then to the Pen effects sub menu. Now select Ribbon. Just click OK on the dialog box and start to draw
. A ribbon effect will be drawn on the main image. To end this filter simply press the space key. Before you read on spend some time just getting used to these functions, experimenting with the different filters and so forth. Photo5 has been designed to be as user friendly as possible, its not perfect in this respect, but you may have a couple of masterpieces on your hands just by doodling away

The tool bar sits at the bottom of the screen and looks like this
Starting from the Right the tools are: Brush, Spray-Can, Line-Draw, Shape-Draw, Fill (Unimplemented), Select, Paste, Text, Clip Library, Undo.
The Tool-Bar has been designed to be as unobtrusive as possible. To this end it disappears when you are drawing on the screen and re-appears when you have finished. Its presence can also be toggled by using the Zoom panel to the far left of the S5`s screen. We will now look at each of the tools individually.
The Brush Tool (Pop-Bar: Selects Brush Size). This tool is fairly obvious. If selected then all pen action on the main image will draw a line inn the selected colour and size and Pen. For more about the different Pens read the Pens section of this manual.
The Spray-Can Tool (Pop-Bar: selects Brush size). This tool will draw on the main image with a spray-can effect in the current colour and brush size.
The Line-Draw Tool (Pop-Bar: Selects Line Type). This tool draws a straight line from point to point in the current brush size and colour. To end line drawing simply select another tool. The Line Draw Tool has two modes, open and closed. A open line will connect the points and when complete the line will be left as it is. A closed line is the same as an open line but when comlete the last poit will connect to the first point. NOTE The line tool works best if you create your lines y using points rather tha drawwing a line across the screen. This is becasue in some cases where there is grey under the line the line will cause an untidy "fanning" effect.
The Shape Tool (Pop-Bar: Selects Shape to draw). This tool will draw either an ellipse or a rectangle depending on what has been selected and each shape has the option to be filled or empty. If a shape is empty then the thickness of it's border is set y the current brush thickness.
The Fill Tool. This Tool has not been implemented because it is far to slow to be of any use at the moment. It will be developed in the future..
The Select Tool (Pop-Bar: Selects weather to cut or copy ot crop). This Tool will allow you to select the Clip Image from the main Image. The selection begins at pen-down and ends at pen-up. To select an area drag down and to the right. If you drag up and left then this action will remove the current clip image.
The Paste Tool (Pop-Bar: Selects the Paste Mode). This Tool will take the current Clip Image and paste it onto the main image in the paste mode determined by the pop-bar. This tool also sets the current paste mode for the Clip Brush (See the Pens Setion). For details on Paste Modes read the section on Graphics modes in the glossary.
The Erase Tool (Pop-Bar Clear Image). This tool will set the brush to clear the image. The pop-bar for this tool will clear the entire main image.
The Text Tool (Pop-Bar: None). This Tool will bring up the text engine. Read the section on the text engine for more details.
The Clip Library Tool
(Pop-Bar: Selects function). This tool will allow you to add the clip image to the Clip Library or to browse through the clip library. Read the section on the Clip Library for more details.
The Undo Tool (Pop-Bar: None). This Tool Will Undo the last operation performed on the Main Image. Depending on the number of undo levels set in preferences the undo tool can be used repeatedly. This option also has the hotkey Ctrl+z.
You can also use the tool to multiple undo by draggig the pen arround the undo tool. Handy if you have a large undo buffer and want to go back to the start.

Options: It is from this dialog box that you control certain features of the operation of Photo5. The options are:
Display Info: Allows you to toggle weather or not the info display is shown. For example the current Brush size, Drawing Mode etc. The option will not effect all instances of info Being Displayed, only those where the display might get in the way of drawing.
Dynamic Tool Bar: The Dynamic Toolbar options allows you to control whether or not the toolbar will disappear when drawing. This feature is very useful and there is not really any need to turn it off.
Auto Undo Levels: Photo5 has a maximum of 20 levels of undo. It is here you set just how many you wish to use. The default is 5 and that should suffice, but if you have loads of free ram you can crank it up to 20. One the other hand if you want you can switch the Undo off completely, but again, there should be no need for this.
Initial Selection: This option allows you to decide where the clip image goes after it has first been selected with the select tool (scissors).
Anim Buffer: Although Photo5 can be set to work from either the C or the D drive the animation functionality is faster when the animation is held on the C drive. This option allows to chose where the animation buffer will be stored independently of where Photo5 is installed.
As of version 2.02 all of these preferences are saved on exit.
Details: This option will bring up a brief summary of Photo5`s status. Giving information about image dimensions, frame numbers and so on.
Photo5 now supports the zooming in and out of the clip image. You cannot zoom on the main image as it is too slow to be of any use. If you have a main image that needs to be zoomed you must select it all using the
select all
menu command and zoom from there.
To zoom the clip image simply tap the zoom bar on the left of the Psion`s screen or use the
and
keys respectively. Depending on the size of the clip image and the direction of zoom the speed will take anywhere from a few seconds to 30 seconds. Once the clip image has been zoomed that will be its new size. Thus, by using a combination of zooming and snap to grid it is possible to get pixel perfect editing of small images and icons.
Technical
1 Memory Impact: Photo 5 is a memory hungry application. It uses about 200k of disk space when not running. At start-up it will use about 250k of memory and if you have a big animation, lots of undo buffers and clip images this can go up to literally megabytes of memory load. In other word you will need a lot of free memory to run Photo5 effectively. Photo5 does contain rudimentary memory management but this should not be relied on.
2 Animation Buffers: Photo5 can be installed on either the C or D drive. However if you use animations it is recommended that you set the animation buffer to the C drive as this will improve Photo5 speed at handling animations.
3 Memory Leak: There is a bug in the Series 5`s ROM that causes space not to be fully reclaimed after deleting temporary files. This is not a bug in Photo5. In order to free up this space it is recommended that you perform a soft reset every few days, you may find that megabytes of space are freed up. Even if you never use Photo5 again you should take this advise; especially if you use the Message Suite allot.
Photo5 contains over 120k of code, some of which is very complex. It also makes extensive use of the graphics buffers and at any time can have ten or more individuated windows present. This is a prime breeding ground for bugs! I am confident that Photo5 is pretty much bug free but it is likely that there are a number of bugs I am unaware off. There are no
directly repeatable
bugs to my knowledge in Photo5. However sometimes the trajectory paste function gets jammed (I call this a glitch).
My policy with bugs is to take them out as soon as they are found. If you find a bug in Photo5 then please try to repeat it and determine the state of Photo5 when it occurred. If you then mail me with as much information as possible I will do my best to sort it out.

This menu contains items related to modifying images.
Invert: This item will Invert the colours f the selected image creating a photo-negative of the mage.
Flip: This item will flip the selected image in any vertical horizontal direction.
Mirror: This item will reflect one half of the selected image in the other half. Reflections in both direction along both axis are possible using the dialog.
Stretch,Squeeze: This function will stretch or squueze the clip image by the specified ammount in the specified direction.
Skew: This function will skew the clip image by the specified ammount in the specified direction.
Bend: This poweful function allows you to bend the clip image clip image by the specified ammount in the specified direction. It only works effectivly when the hight and width proportions are similar. Also note that in some cases it will leave margins of space in the final clip image.
Superimpose: Using this option you can superimpose one image onto another. Superimposition will only work with the main image and a selected image of the same height and width.
Clip Image
: This item has two functions. It displays whether or not the Clip Image is selected. A tick means that all Transformations will be applied to the Clip Image. By licking on this item you can to toggle the selected image between Clip and Main.
Photo5 now supports Grid and Snap to Grid functionality. This allows precision placement, copying and drawing to be carried out. If used well the Grid option will allow Photo5 to accurately design in a similar way as with a CAD package.
The GRID can has a minimum size of 5 pixels but for most purposes the default size of 32 pixels should be fine. If the Snap to Grid option is selected then Photo5 will align all relevant drawing and other actions to the specified grid size.
Toggle Grid The SPACE BAR when pressed will show the Grid in the current size. The grid will oly e present whilst the space bar is held down. This is used as a visual guide for how the grid is set-up. The grid can never be present when drawing or filtering on images due to limitations of the way the Psion handles Graphics plane.
The Snap to Grid option DOES NOT effect all image processes. Following are details of what is and is not effected by Snap to Grid:
Drawing Tools All shape tools and the line tool can be Snapped. Of the brushes and pens only the Default brush and Symmetry Brushes can be snapped the others always act as if Snap to Grid is off.
Clip image Tools Cut, Copy, Paste and Select Clip Image are all able to be Snapped. This allows precision copying and placement of the clip image. For this reason the Precision Select and Copy options in earlier Photo5 versions have been removed.
Filters and Plugins and Animation These are never effected by Snap to Grid.
Photo5 now has a comprehensive and powerful range of animation functions. It can handle animations up to 200 frames and of the maximum resolution in 16 colours. Photo5 can, at present, Load animations in MBM format. These are created either in Photo5 or using the dos utility BMCONV that comes on the Psion CD. Hopefully, in future, there will be support for GIF animations.
When Photo5 loads an animation or creates a new animation via the Animation Menu it enters Animation Mode. When in animation Mode the following tool bar appears at the left of the screen:
Frame Display: Top Number is the Current frame, Bottom Number is the Number is the number of frames in the animation
Add Frame to animation
Goto First Frame
Goto Previous Frame
Goto Next Frame
Goto Last Frame
What each button does is shown to the right of the picture. Note that the Frame Display box also acts as a quick navigator; click on it and
a frame requestor box will be shown. Using the Animation tool bar you can quickly navigate through your animation or add frames to that animation. This tool bar is not intended to offer animation editing facilities as these are handled by the Animation Menu which should be read about for an in-depth survey of Photo5`s animation capabilities.
ANIM-BRUSHES: The Anim-Brush concept is simple.... have one animation and use that in another animation. This way many effects can be achieved. You could draw an man walking and have him then walk across the screen. Or you shimmering logo could be sent on swirling paths using the Anim-Pen tool.
Anim-Brushes when loaded take the place of the clip-image. The first frame is always shown and can be positioned and placed anywhere in the main image. There is no frame limit or size limit to anim brushes. Anim-Brushes, unlike the Clip-Image, cannot be effected by Plugins or Transformations. For example If you try to run a Warp filter on an Anim-Brush you will be told this. This does not mean you cannot alter Anim-Brushes... because they are just animations you can load them straight into Photo5 and do what you want with them. It is only when loaded as Anim-Brushes that they cant be changed.
To clear an Anim-Brush either load in another, select a new Clip Image or use the pen and select backwards as when clearing the normal Clip Image.
ALL ANIMATION FUNCTIONALITY in Photo5 is available to registered Users Only. My motivation for this two-fold.
(1) I have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours on Photo5 and consider it to be great value for money!!!
(2) Many people have registered and deserve something for their effort that non registered users do not get.

This Menu Controls the majority of Photo5`s animation functions. If Photo5 has no animation memory then the only option is to create a new animation. Once this has been done, or if an animation has been loaded using the file menu then the Animation menu becomes active.
Menu: New Movie This option brings up a dialog box where you specify the number of frames in the animation and the dimensions of each frame. There is also the option to use the current main Image as a base in which case the animation will be created with the dimensions of the Main Image and the contents of the main image will occupy each frame.
Menu Play. This option will start playing the current animation. To stop the play back press any key. It should be noted that Photo5 compromises between memory load and playback speed and this means with larger animations the play back may not be as fast as desired. Should you want to see your animation played back at the maxim speed then I suggest using the freeware PicSee application which is downloadable from Salt. This uses sophisticated buffering and streaming techniques to play back even high resolution large framed animations with impressive speed.
Menu Frames. This menu calls up three sub menus as follows:
INSERT: This brings up a dialog box which allows you to insert any number of blank frames into any point of the animation. Simply select the start frame for the insert and the number of frames for inserting and Photo5 will process the insertion. This option can also be used to append large numbers of frames without the need to use the append button on the Animation Tool Bar.
DELETE: This brings up a dialog box allowing you to delete frames from the animation. You select the first frame of the deletion and the last frame and these will be removed from the animation. Should you wish to delete just one frame then set both the from and the to frames to be the number of the frame to be deleted. If you delete all frames in the animation then Photo5 will remove the entire animation from memory and return to standard drawing mode.
COPY: This options allows you to copy the current frame to a series of other frames.Go to the frame you want to copy and bring up this dialog. Then select the from frame, which is the starting frame of the copying and select the end frame. There is an option to STEP which will o0nly copy frames in increments of the number set in the set requestor. For instance, if STEP is set to 2 then the frame will be copied to every other frame. There is also a Copy Mode selector which will select the Graphics Mode by which the copying is done.
REVERSE: This option will reverse the entire animation. The first frame will be the last and so on.
Loop: This option will loop an animation so that it plays in a smooth cycle. At you discression you may want to delete the last frame of a looped animation.
Menu Paths
Photo5 has the ability, common to High-End animation platforms, to use Path scripting. This is a feature where a path is defined and then used to draw across the animation. For example if the path is a circle then Photo5 can draw that circle across the animation. Photo5 paths do not just allow you to draw lines, you can also use them to trace out a path for the pasting of the Clip Image. With Paths you have precision control and endless variations for creating realistic motion and effects in your animations. There are too ways Photo5 can use paths, Anim Pen and Trajectory Paste.
ANIM PEN This
feature allows you to draw a path on screen using the pen and then set Photo5 to use that path for a drawing function over the animation frames. The Dialog Box has three modes:
Sketch: Using this option Photo5 will simply take the path you have drawn and draw it out step by step over the animation in the Current colour and Brush Size. Depending upon the number of frames in the animation the success will vary. If you have a complex path and only ten frames then obviously that path cannot be drawn exactly as it was. The trick is to only create a complex path if you have a sufficient number of frames.
Line: The Line Path differs from the other two modes in that it is a Point-for-Point path. Each point at which a line is created will represent one frame. This means that if your line-path has more points than frames then the surplus frames will not be drawn. Once a line-path has been defined press space to process it.
Paste: This powerful tool allows you to define a Path and then set this path as a route for the Clip Image to be pasted across the animation. If you have a Ball as the Clip Image and draw a path that "bounces"; across the screen then when processed the resulting animation will be a ball bouncing across the screen!! Once the Paste-Path has been defines another dialog box will appear asking for the Graphics mode with which the pasting will take place.
(NOTE: As of Version 2.02 Photo5 can support Anim-Brushes. These can be used with this function)
The Anim Pen dialog box also has the option to set the start and end frame of the Path processing.
TRAJECTORY PASTE
This feature offers powerful and precise manipulation of the clip image across an animation. Basically a Trajectory paste is a method to send the clip image moving across the animation with a set direction and speed. But as explained below much, much more is possible.
There are two dialogs for this tool, the standard dialog and the advanced dialog. Its parameters are as follows:
The Standard Trajectory Paste Dialog
Start Points; (x) and (y): These are the co-ordinates at which the Trajectory paste will begin. It is important to note that the initial values are always taken from the current position of the Clip Image. So if you move the Clip Image to the desired start point and call the Trajectory Paste you will not need to change these.
Increment (x) and (y): These numbers define, in pixels, the amount by which the Clip Image will move with each Frame succession. If they are set to 10,10 then with each frame the clip image will move ten pixels ac
ross and ten Pixels down. If they are set to minus numbers then the will move backwards accordingly.
Start and End frames: These values define the start and end frames for the Trajectory Paste. The start value is taken from the current frame and the end value is the last frame. Make sure you check these are correct before processing.
Reposition Clip Image: This checkbox allows you to reposition the clip image in tune with; the Trajectory Paste. So if this is set then when the Trajectory Paste has been processed the Clip Image will be at the last location of the Paste ready to be pasted from that point to another path. If this option is not set then the Clip Image will remain where it was at the start of the Trajectory Paste.
Paste Mode: This Option sets the Graphics Mode for the Trajectory Paste.
NOTE: As of Version 2.02 Photo5 can support Anim-Brushes. These can be used with this function
The Advanced Trajectory Paste Dialog
Accelerate (x) and (y): These numbers define the amount, if any, by which the increments will accelerate. If you have a& quot; ball& quot; as a clip image and have the x increment set to 1 and accelerate set to 1 then over the animation the ball will accelerate to the right of the screen. The values correspond directly to the increment set for the paste. So if x increment is set to -1 then to accelerate to the left of the screen x acceleration will need to be a minus number. This way you can create realistic changes of directions by setting the acceleration to the opposite sign of the increment. Try having x increment as ten and x acceleration as minus 1 and watch as the object slows down then reverses!
Speed Limit (x) and (y): When using acceleration the object can end up moving too fast. This option allows you to restrict the maximum speed, in pixels per frame thus providing a limit on the objects motion.
Border Damping: Option Only Effects Bouncing (see below). This option will allow you to select a border around the edge of the main image that Photo5 uses to bounce the image off. If it is a positive number the border is outside the main Image, if it is a negative number the border is inside. Useful for fine tuning bounces and accommodating for oversized borders on clip images.
At Edge: When the clip image reaches the end of the screen one of three things can happen, these are set by this option.
Leave Screen: The object will simply continue its path off the screen.
Bounce: The object will bounce of the screen`s border. Photo5 achieves a very realistic bounce effect. For this option read about border damping (above).
Emerge: The object will emerge from the opposite end of the screen.
Menu Anim-Brush: Photo5 can now use Anim-Brushes. These are essentially animations that are stored in the Clip-Image and can be used by the Animation Path Tools. Anim-Brushes are an amazing addition to Photo5. They allow many different effects to be achieved.
Open: This option allows you to open an Anim-Brush for use.
Preview: This option will Preview the Anim-Brush; i.e. it will paly it for you. To stop the preview press space.
Anim-Brushes are discussed in detail in the Animation the Section
MENU MORE: At present this menu contains only open Option, Export Stills. This options will take a base file name
(Do not give it an extension) and export each frame in the animation into the selected directory, numbering them accordingly. Useful for turning MBM animations into MBM stills for conversion with BMCONV exe.
For More Details on Photo5`s Animation
read the Animation Section.
Photo5 is shareware and can be registered from the Palmscape homepage.
Registration will offer the following benifits:
1) Removal of Programme restrictions:
No Save limit.
Full Animation Fuunctionality.
No Startup Delay
2)Access to the Photo5 Members site. Here you will find Special features such as a Dedicated message board, Shareware only fileters and plugins Plus other groovy things.
3) Enhanced Customer Support.
4) An illustrated Manual to print out.
The Photo5 Text engine is a powerfull tool for creating text on your Series5. It allows to to create hybrid fonts and even textured text. The method for text creation involves three steps.
(1) Defining The Text
The first screen you are presented with is where you enter the text and define the font and size. Simply type away your text and use the Font and size buttons to select the font and size. This will be updated in real time.
The colour of the text is determined by the current brush colour.
When the text has been entered select the Render button.
(2)Add Effects
The next stage allows you to add various effects to the text. There are standard effects such as Bold and Italic as well as the option to add special features.
Features are hybrid effects such as 3d text and outline text. The bordered feature will create text with rounded corners and a border. NOTE This feature only works well when the pen colour is set to a light shade and arial font is used.
Once the effects have been set up you have the option of adding a texture to the text. There are two ways a texture can be added, either using a Photo5 Preset or by using a normal MBM image file. Simpley select either option and then the text will be rendered in that texture.
Once the text has been rendered it will be placed as the new clip image in the top left of the screen.

The Filter Menu is where you deal with the application of filters onto the images in Photo5. A filter is a process that alters an image in a certain way; producing special effects, patterns and so forth.
Menu: Plug-in`s. This option will call up the separate plug-in`s menu. The Plugin-In`s menu will then scan the plugins directory for plugins and display the available choices. ,You then select the choice and the relevant plug-in will start. More on Plugins can be Found in the Plugins Chapter.
Menu: Convolve: This sub-menu contains two filters, Fracture and Warp.
Fracture will displace the pixels in an image by varying amounts. The options are:
Size: Controls the Pixel area that is to be displaced.
Layer Mode: Sets the mode for rendering the image. are described in the Glossary.
Divergence: This controls the amount of variance in the displacement of the pixels. The larger the amount, the more fractured the rendered output will be.
Warp takes tiles of a defines size and maps them over each other depending producing various warped effects. The Options are:
Sizes(x,y): Controls the tile size in both axis.
Direction: This sets whether the rendering will overwrite the next tile or be overwritten by that tile.
Layer Mode: Sets the mode for rendering the image. are described in the Glossary.
Offset Controls: The control how much the warping will vary. If all set to zero there will be no varia
nce. Offset itself controls the starting variance.
Menu: Medium: These menus allow you to effect the appearance of the entire selected image in different ways. Emboss will make the image look as if it has been embossed onto pressed paper. Line Art will make the image look like a line art pen sketch. Mosaic will turn the image into a coloured mosaic of a definable tile size. Posterize will attempt convert the image into an image of the speicfied number of levels of grey. Using Posterize on level one is very good for creating masks. Acid Bands will create a series of weird bands across the image. Solarize will attempt to replicate a Solarisation filter on the image. for this filter to be effective it needs lots of grey in the image, eg a photo. It will not work on black/white alone.
All options for all Medium filters are self explanatory.
Menu: Mandelbrot: This filter will render the mandelbrot set into the current Main or Clip Image. It takes time but handy for creating textures and so on.
Menu: Pattern: This will take the clip image and repeat it across the main image in the selected mode(See Glossary).
The Clip Library concept is as follows. Whilst editing an image you may need various clip images at different times. Using the clip library you can just drop a clip image and pick it up at a later time; even if you shut down Photo5.
To place a clip image in the library use the clip library tool`s pop-bar, just click on the PLUS sign and the clip image will disappear into the library. To retrieve an image from the library use the same pop-bar but scroll through with the two arrow buttons or use the keys,
and
. The clip library is not intended as a file management feature, there is no functionality to delete single images or move images around. You can however clear the Clip Library from the tools menu.
The Clip Library can contain a maximum of 20 clip images.
Here are some tips and some tricks to help you get the most out of Photo5.
You can achieve some neat combinations of filters by using the Superimpose function. Try loading an image, adding a charcoal filter and then superimposing the image back onto itself. Or suppose you have an image which is too dark is you superimpose it over a light background the image will be less dark.
If you want to quickly paste the clip image to re-cut it but the main image is full then just clear the main image with the Eraser Pop-Bar, paste the image, re-cut it and then use undo to bring back the main image.
The Bend Transformation is powerful when used right. It generally creates a margin around the clip image so its best to paste and re-cut the clip image and then keep bending. Try it on some text and you will see what I mean. So long as you keep re-cutting the clip image to remove the margins you can bend in all directions again and again.
The Clip Brush can create some amazing brush effects. For example, use the standard spray can and make a pattern, then cut this out and use it as a brush
it should look like crayons. Also, if you want to create a round clip brush you can use round mask clip tool to do that in a second: its ideal for creating neat clip brushes.
The Crop tool will work on entire animations so you can use it to create neat animbrushes from larger animations.
The Mandelbrot filter is too slow to realistically be used to render big images
and who would want to, the Mandelbrot set is very 1988. What it can be used for is creating clip brushes and textures for patterning. Just create a small Mandelbrot in a clip image and mirror it etc the paint with it or pattern with it.
Want to Join two animations together but cant see how?? Easy.. load one animation in and then load second animation as an Anim-brush. Insert the relevant frames into the Animation and then using Trajectory Paste map the Anim-Brush into these empty frames without any motion. Simple.
To create inverse kinematic effects like a Logo being assembled from flying letters do the following. Create the Logo and paste it onto the first frame. Select each letter and send it whizzing off using Trajectory Paste. Now reverse the animation and hey presto!, the logo will be perfectly assembled from the letters.

Photo5 would not have been possible without the assistance of some great people in the Psion community. It is this spirit that keeps me programming
My Biggest thank you goes to Russ Spooner who wrote the code that enables animations to be saved as well as the code that copies into the system clip-board and the BMP import code. He has also helped with many other issues and quite simply I cant thank him enough
There are also other developers such as Ad Bosch, Paul Law, Steve Litchfield and many more who have helpe
d me with all aspects of Programming as well as with other issues related to Photo5. Also those who have written plugins for Photo5. Thanks go to you all.
Ady from TotalS5 has been supportive over the months, so thanks to him.
There were two people who helped with the manual, one proof read it the other did a big chunk of conversion to this format. Alas, after a hard drive crash I lost my mail box and thus there names. I apologise guys but if you read this mail me and ill put you in.
Finally I would like to thank all of the many users of Photo5 who have lent criticism and suggestion since the beginning. You can have all the help in the world from top developers but if the users are silent then this doesn
t go far. So thank you.
My very final thanks go to the Brazilian Horse trader, Carlos Santiago del Mere. In my time of need he took me in, fed me, gave me a bed in which to sleep and explained the rudiments of EPOC threads and event handling.
Thank you all for coming

Photo5 has a large number of different pens. A Pen is best thought of as a distinct way to draw on the screen to produce the desired effect. For example you might want an airbrush or an italic pen and so on. NOTE: Only the default pen and symmetry pens are effected by the Snap to Grid option.
The Pen Menu
Pen Select
option in the tools Menu, or Ctrl+p, will bring up the Pen Menu. This is where you choose which pen is to be used for all subsequent drawing operations.
The first pen menu conatins a check-bok, "Lock Pen Menu" if this is set then all calls for a menu will bring up the pen menu directly.
You will note that the first ten options have a bracketed number next to them. This number is the key-code for that pen allowing quick access to these pens. EG, Pressing 2 will switch to the Italic Pen. The names given to the pens are intended to be approximate descriptions, not exact simulations. The pens are grouped as much as possible by similarity or function, as discussed below.
NOTE: Some pens have a size ceiling. This is the maximum brush size at which the pen will draw. If the current pen width is greater than this limit the maximum size will be used instead.
Pens: Default. This is the standard Photo5 pen set in the current Brush Size and colour.
Pens: Italic. Approximates an italic pen dependant upon the speed and angle with which the pointer is moved. (Ceiling 10).
Pens: Felt Tip. Approximates a thin felt tip marker.(Ceiling 7).
Pens: Calligraphy. This pen mimics a think oriental calligraphy brush. There is no ceiling but things can get messy with large pen widths.
Brushes: General :The brushes are best understood by experimentation. You should note that they are computation intensive and work best when the cursor is moved slowly. Also some of the brushes will only draw in grey and due to the Psion`s graphics handling in some cases this grey will NOT overwrite black.
Brushes: Clip Brush: This brush deserves special mention. It turns the current CLIP IMAGE into a brush that is drawn in real time onto the Main image. This brush is very powerful allowing you to achieve some amazing effects. The GRAPHICS MODE it pastes in is set using the Copy Tool Option so you can pasted in inverted mode and so forth. The maximum size for this brush is 256 by 256 pixels.
The Other Menu Items are Pretty self explanatory and can be understood best by experimentation. In some cases there are two versions of a brush where one has the letters (Vel) after it
s name. This means that the brush uses the velocity of pen movement to effect the brush.
Select All: This options allows you to copy the Main Image into a new Clip Image. The whole image is copied verbatim.
Centre Clip: This option will place the Clip Image at the centre of the screen. This is useful for precision placement or if the Clip Image goes off screen when it is used with the Path Animation Tools.
Resize Image: This option allows you to process pixel perfect re-scalling of either the main image or the clip image. The dialog box will appear with the current dimensions and all you need to do is enter the desiered width and height. There is also an option to Maintain Aspect Ratio. If this is selected the image will be scalled and its proportions preserved. To use this function you must only alter one of the scaling parameters; this will then be used to determine the correct aspect ratio.
Resize Paper: This option will place the main image in a larger frame of drawing space. You can select the placement of the image in the new space and also choose the colour of the peper.
ZAM! : ZAM stands for Zoom and Modify and allows you to zoom into a section of an image and edit it. To use ZAM you must first select a clip image of an area less than 80 by 80 pixels. Then click on the ZAM option and the main image will dissapear. In its place will be the ZAM window centered on screen and to the right of this there will be the clip image. You can then draw on the ZAM window and see the results on the clip image. These are toolbars to select the draw colour and brush size as well as an UNDO button that will take you back to the start of the ZAMing. When you are happy with the results press OK. Now the clip image will be in the place it was cut and can be pasted back onto the main image.
Sub Menu More:
This option controlls just the clip image. There are four options:
Clip To Main: This option will take the current clip image and convert it into the main image, thus removing the main image.
Clip to Clipboard: This option will send the current clip image into the system graphics clipboard. It can then be pasted directly into sketch.
Load Clip: With this option you can load an image straight into the Clip Image. This is handy when you have a saved image you want to paste in or if you use masks. Masks are like stencils that can be pasted onto an image to cut out a complex shape (For ore details see Tips and Tricks). This option also allows you to load an indexed bitmap as with the standard open dialog.
Save Clip: This will save the selected Clip Image. It is useful for creating icons, masks, graphics for programs and so on. At the moment Photo5 has no function for cropping the main image so use Save Clip to save an image which has been "cropped" by selection.
FThe Tools Menu allows you to control certain productivity functions of photo5 such as pen selection and mask creation.
Pen Selection: This menu option will bring you to a new menu where you will find all of Photo5`s pens available for selection. Pens are discussed in detail in the Pens Chapter.
Empty Clip Lib: This option allows to you empty the clip library of ALL clip images, as discussed in the section on the Clip Library.
Colour Picker: This tool is used to select a colour from the Main Image. Simply position the pen over the area with the colour you want and pen up. This colour will then become the current colour.
Grid Set-up. This option will bring you to a dialog box where you can specify the size of the grid used by the snap to grid and show grid functions.
Mask Sub-Menu: Masks are images that can be used to cut out sections of other images. For instance if you had a start shaped image you could use that image as a clip image to cut out a start shaped section of the main image.
Cut Out Mask: This option will use the clip image to cut out the area of the main image over which it is placed. It is important to realise that Masks must be JUST black and white images or they will not work effectively. When you are cutting out a mask it is the black area of the clip image that is will be replaced with the image from the main image.
Round Mask Clip: This tool will take the clip image and cut out a round version of that clip image. The main use of this tool is to allow you to quickly create clip brushes without corners but it can also be used for other things and in combination with filters and transformations.
Snap To Grid: This option button toggles the Snap to Grid Function of Photo5.
This menu controls all of the file operations of Photo5
Browse
Photo5 is now able to browse throug directories displaying images. In this sense it also makes an excellent picture viewer. When in browse mode a this tool bar is displayed in the bottom right corder:
The arrows on the right will scrol you through the images in the directory. The key equivalents are the right and left arrows.
The upwards arrow will bring up a dialog to change directories, the key equivalent for this is the up arrow key.
The circle will leave the browser, returning to Photo5 with the image now ready for editing. The key equivalent for this is the space bar.
If there are no MBM files in a directory then the dialog box will be shown again.
Open Image
Photo5 can load images in the following formats: MBM, Jpeg, Gif and BMP. For information on the last three read the section on File Formats.
The Open Image dialof is a Standard File Dialog plus:
Bitmap Index: It is possible to load an individual bitmap from a multi-bitmap by selecting the relevant index in this option box.
Merge In: This will merge the file with the current main image.
Open Animation:
Standard File Dialog plus:
Frame Alternation: This option allows you to load alternate frames into thhe animation. For exaple, a 100 frame animation wil be shortened to 50 frames if this option is set to 2. the default vale,1, will load all frames.
This option will create a new image of the specified size and paper colour.

Photo5 can load the following file formats:
MBM: The standard EPOC Graphics format.
JPEG, GIF and Windows BMP.
It cannot load files saved directly from sketch.
In order to load JPEG, GIF and BMP files there must be a Registered Version of MBMview by Lieuwe de Vries. This is an excelent graphics viewing application. Lieuwe has spent many months writing the conversion routeens and has kindly allowed me to Use them directly in Ph

So, If you want to load and edit Jpegs , Gifs and BMPs you will need to have a registered version of Both MBMview and Photo5 on your machine. The files, thanks to Lieuwe`s fats routeens load with an impressive speed and make Photo5 a truely "in your pocket" Graphics application. Photo5 is primarily a Pen based application. However there are some keyboard functions that enhance its use in addition to the menu shortcuts.
(1) The Arrow Keys
The arrow keys allow you to move either the clip image or the main image in the following way.
The Main Image:
If the main image is larger than the screen then the arrow keys will scroll in the pressed direction. The main image will only be moved to its extremity, not beyond. Thus if the image is wider than the screen but the same height then the up/down arrows will do nothing.
Modifier: None: Moves 64 pixels.
Modifier: Shift: Moves one page
The Clip Image:
Pressing the arrow keys in conjunction with Ctrl will move the clip image aropund the screen.
the up/down arrows will do nothing.
Modifier: None: Moves 1 pixel.
Modifier: Shift: Moves 10 pixels.
NOTE: The above modifies are in addition to Ctrl.
(2) The Number Keys
The number keys,1 to 0 allow quick selection of the desierd Pen. The relevant number is shown in the Pen Select Menu.
(3) Q and W Keys.
These two keys, scroll through the Clip Library.
(4) A and S Keys.
These keys allow you zoom the clip image in and out.
(5) The Tab Key
This will toggle the presence of the toolbars.
(6) The Enter key
This will send the current clip image into the clip library.
(7) The Delete Key
This will delete the current clip image.

The tool bar sits at the bottom of the screen. Starting from the Right the tools are: Brush, Spray-Can, Line-Draw, Shape-Draw, Colour Picker , Select, Paste, Text, Clip Library, Undo.
The Colour Picker. This tool will turn the cursor into a colour picker enabling you to set the current colour to an equivalent colour chosen from the main image.

GThe Tools Menu allows you to control certain productivity functions of photo5 such as pen selection and mask creation.
Pen Selection: This menu option will bring you to a new menu where you will find all of Photo5`s pens available for selection. Pens are discussed in detail in the Pens Chapter.
Colour Picker: This option turns the pen into a color picker which can be dragged over the main image setting the pen colour to the colour of the pixels being selected. When the pen is lifted that colour will be current.

Massive thanks also to Simon Jacobs. He wrote the C++ code for the fill routeen. This is an obvious inclusion in any paint package but it was very very hard for me to do in EPOC. Then came allong the C++ Genius Simon who wrote it gratis. What a guy.
There are also other developers such as Ad Bosch, Paul Law, Steve Litchfield and many more who have helped me with all aspects of Programming as well as with other issues related to Photo5. Also those who have written plugins for Photo5. Thanks go to you all.

The tool bar sits at the bottom of the screen and looks like this:
Starting from the Right the tools are: Brush, Spray-Can, Line-Draw, Shape-Draw, Colour Picker , Select, Paste, Text, Clip Library, Undo.
This tool allows you to fill any enclosed area with any colour. To use it simply select the desired colour, then select the tool and make a pendown within the area that you want to fill. A very special thanks go to Simon Jacobs who wrote this tool in low-level c++ enabling an impressive speed unparralelled on any handheld. NOTE: Because of the low-level nature of this tool it is unadvisable to switch to other applications while a fill is taking place.
will turn the cursor into a colour picker enabling you to set the current colour to an equivalent colour chosen from the main image.
