  14. This text file documents the history of the program, its installation,
  15. and some of the more technical aspects to running it. For general help
  16. in using and understanding Psi-Mapper/GB, please browse through the
  17. *extensive* on-line help. The on-line help is the only documentation
  18. of most of Psi-Mapper/GB's features, so work through it properly! 8-)

  23. Rejigged the information bar and various screens to be compatible
  24. with the Psion Revo; removed several out of date overlays;

  33. All data sets are original work of the various contributors, collated using
  34. information from low resolution free maps, genuine public domain
  35. information, data gathered from personally-owned GPS units, club/hobbyist
  36. databases, and RAC and AA member information packs.

  38. ****Please note**** that the displayed graphics, coastlines, boundaries,
  39. railways and road vectors are shown diagrammatically, for ease of
  40. understanding. Please especially note Psi-Mapper's low resolution.
  41. Everything is at least +/-1km both horizontally and vertically!
  42.  
  43. Using low resolution means
  44. (i) that the program data can be built from public domain information
  45.  
  46. (ii) that Psi-Mapper won't conflict or overlap with existing PC-based
  47. GIS systems or infringe map copyrights
  48.  
  49. (iii) (most importantly) that quite large areas and amounts of
  50. information can be crammed into a palmtop, where a PC version would
  51. need megabytes!!

  53. Components and Installation.
  54. ----------------------------
  55. If you unzipped Psi-Mapper/GB OK, you should have ended up with 2
  56. separate files. One will be this text file 8-)
  57.  
  58. The other is an SIS file.
  59.  
  60. (Experts)
  61. If you know what a .SIS file is, just double-click on it in Win95
  62. Explorer or tap on it on your EPOC palmtop and you'll be installed in no
  63. time.
  64.  
  65. (Beginners)
  66. If you *don't* know what a .SIS file is, this must be one of the very
  67. first third party applications you've ever installed. Don't worry,
  68. it's all quite painless:
  69.  
  70.   IF you have the 'older' PsiWin 2.01 or if you've downloaded
  71.   Psi-Mapper/GB directly onto the palmtop, the best way to proceed is
  72.   to copy the "mappergb.sis" file into a suitable place on your Psion.
  73.   If the file appears on the system screen with a question mark beside
  74.   it, this just means you haven't yet upgraded your palmtop to accept
  75.   EPOC install files. Grab a copy of the special INSTEXE.EXE program
  76.   from the same place as you obtained Psi-Mapper/GB and tap on it on
  77.   your Psion. You should now see a nice little icon beside the
  78.   "mappergb.sis" file and can tap on it to complete your installation.

  80.   IF you have PsiWin 2.1 or later, just double-click on the "mappergb.sis" file
  81.   to launch EPOC Install on the PC itself and to complete the
  82.   installation.

  85. If all went well, you should now have a new Map/GB icon on your
  86. Extras bar.

  93. TOWNS.MP1    - a data-set of approximately 1100 towns and cities,
  94.                their post and STD codes - (updated April 1999)
  95. COASTLIN.MP2 - a data-set showing the coastline of GB - (updated
  96.                by David Brown, November 1996)
  97. ROADS.MP2    - a data-set of the GB motorway and most of the primary route
  98.                network - (updated March 97)

  103. RAILWAYS.MP4 - a vector format data-set of the GB railway network

  133. Each of the overlays usually includes reference information for each item
  134. (for example, telephone contact numbers), and this can be displayed by
  135. turning 'Overlay Reference Fields' On.

  138. Deleting info from the custom town database
  139. ------------------------------------------------------------
  140. Use the supplied CustomEd.opo utility to maintain and prune your list
  141. of custom towns. You'll find the utility in the \system\apps\mappergb\ folder.
  142. Once in the program, use the Menu functions to make
  143. progress.
