ESee Version history for details of the new features in nICQ.
nICQ is similar to the PC version of ICQ. If you are familiar with ICQ you will also be familiar with nICQ. This topic will describe the basics to get you started.
To use nICQ you must have the following:
The PSION Message Suite installed
An Internet connection
A registered ICQ number
When you start nICQ for the first time a dialog box will prompt you to enter your ICQ number and password. Make sure you are ready to connect to the Internet so that nICQ can look up your ICQ number.
If nICQ is successful in finding your ICQ number, and the password is valid you will be logged on automatically.
To add users to your contacts list press Ctrl F and type in the ICQ number of the person you wish to add to your contacts list. If the user is found a dialog box will appear showing their details. To add the user to your contacts list press the Add to contacts button.
To send a message tap on the user or press Enter on the keyboard while the user is selected, a pop-up menu will appear. Press Send message to send a message.
When a message is received from a user you will hear a sound (if it is enabled), an icon will appear in the receive button at the bottom of the screen and a message on the left part of the screen (log) will be displayed. To read the message press the receive button or press Ctrl R.
Note: See Shortcut Keys topic for quick access to the menus.
fHThe contacts list is on the right hand side of the screen. This is used to store the list of the users you communicate with. Before you can communicate with a user you must add them to your contacts list.
Filtering contacts list
The button on top of the contacts list filters the list. Pressing this button will give the following options:
Online
Offline
Authorisation
Not in list
Online and offline show the users on-line and off-line respectively. Authorisation will show the contacts in your list that still require authorisation from the user. Not in list shows users that have contacted you, but are not in your contacts list. All shows you all the users in your contacts list.
Adding users to your contacts list
To add a user to your contacts list on the main menu select Find/add users and then type in either the name, Email address or the ICQ number of the person you want to add. The matched users will then be displayed after a short while. If only one match is found details for this user will automatically be displayed, otherwise, if you want more information for a certain user press the User info button. To add the user to your contacts list press the Add to contacts button. If authorisation is required from the user you will be requested for an authorisation request message.
To add users to your contacts list that are not in your list but are listed in your "Not in list" tap the user in the list or press Enter on the keyboard and select the Info option. The user details will be fetched from the server. Press Add to contacts to add the user to your list.
Removing users from your contacts list
To remove users from your list, highlight the user in your list then press Del on the keyboard to remove it.
Changing the display name of a contact
If you do not like the display name of a contact or wish to change it to something more memorable, you can change it. Select the contact you wish to change and press Ctrl I. This will bring up the contact information dialog box. Simply modify the
Display name
field at the bottom of the screen, then press the OK button and this contact will now be shown by your chosen name.
CEach user on your contacts list contains message history for both incoming and outgoing messages. To view the message history select the contact on the list then press Ctrl H. A dialog box will pop-up displaying incoming messages. To display outgoing messages press the
outgoing
tab. To read a message select the message in the list and press Enter.
Note: Only the last 10 messages are stored by default. This can be changed by selecting Configure from the Tools menu. If you wish to permanently store messages you can save them by pressing Ctrl S. A message in the saved state is shown in the list with a tick by the side of it. Saved messages are never deleted by nICQ, unless you manually delete it or change it back to its unsaved state by pressing Ctrl S again.
AYou may send offline messages without being connected to the internet. Sending an offline message is the same as sending an online message. Select the contact in your list and press Ctrl S. Type in the message and send it. nICQ will now store this message until you connect to the ICQ server after which it will send it automatically. To view offline messages press Ctrl O. If required offline message may be deleted.
AIf you have more than one ICQ number or share a machine between many people you may register more ICQ numbers. To register another ICQ user select Add another registered user from the Add/change current user menu.
To change the active user select Change the active user on the Add/change current user menu and choose the new active user.
To remove a registered user select Remove ICQ # from computer on the Add/hange current user menu and choose the registered user to remove.
kDSelecting Configure on the Tools menu allows you to set/reset override authorisation and change the message history options.
Gereral
Authorisation is used when adding contacts to your list. If the user you are trying to add to your contact list has authorisation enabled, the override authorisation setting allows you to override this and add the user to your list right away.
This is useful if you are transferring your contact list from your PC version of ICQ to nICQ and you quickly want to add the contacts without bothering about authorisation of each user.
The auto connect when online setting is used to automatically connect nICQ if you are already connected to the Internet when you launch nICQ.
Message history
You can change the number of messages nICQ stores per contact. By default this is 10. This helps minimise the amount of valuable disk space nICQ uses up. If important messages are required to be kept they can be saved and nICQ will not delete them.
If disk space is still a problem selecting the option
Delete all unsaved messages on exit
will delete everything that is unsaved leaving just saved messages.
ASelecting Proxy server settings on the Tools menu allows you to enable the proxy settings if you are accessing the ICQ
server via a proxy.
You must set-up your proxy server so that it accepts UDP calls from nICQ. In the nICQ proxy settings, type in the name or IP address for your proxy server and also the port number (usually 4000).
Make sure your proxy server forwards UDP packets on the selected port to icq.mirabilis.com on port 4000.
}CMost of the shortcut keys are listed in the menus, the exceptions are the buttons at the bottom of the screen and the contacts list button at the top.
The following keys can be used to access the menu buttons at the bottom of the screen (from left to right):
Menu - The nICQ menu
Ctrl C - Connection status
Ctrl R - Read message
By pressing Ctrl L you can access the contacts list button.
The following numbers are shortcuts to contacts filtering:
1 - Online
2 - Offline
3 - Authorisation
4 - Not in list
5 - All
While viewing message history you can press
and
for displaying incoming and outgoing messages respectively.
Tip: To launch nICQ easily it is suggested you arrange the nICQ icon just above the program icon bar. To do this press the Extras button and tap the Extra bar to the left of the screen. This will bring up a dialog box where program icons can be positioned.
