- a genuinely playable mini-piano, with full volume and tuning controls, and a nifty recording feature
- a metronome, both audible and visual, with a handy tap tempo facility
- a tone generator, for use when tuning instruments
- tempo and time calculators
The program is fully working shareware. No nag screens, no crippling, no limitations. Its success (or otherwise) is determined entirely by the honesty of you, the user. Thanks for your support.
fDUse the metronome to provide you with visual and audio clues when trying to play at a particular tempo. The screen animates and the sound system optionally 'clicks'.
The Metronome comes with its own set of controls:
- the Play symbol (or the space bar) starts the metronome
- the Stop symbol (or the space bar) stops it again
- the Tempo control allows variation of the metronome speed, measured in beats per minute. Tap or drag the control to set it in a particular position or use the left and right arrow keys to 'nudge' it
- the Click control allows toggling of the audible 'click' that sounds on each metronome beat. Tap it to switch between On and Off
- the Tap control lets you 'tap out' a particular tempo. The averaging process needs six taps to work properly. In other words, tap six times to a rhythm and you'll find the tempo automatically adjusted. The Play symbol start the metronome off again at your new tempo.
Note that the metronome will automatically stop if you go to the system screen or another application, to save your batteries and your nerves! When brought back to the foreground, it will restart.
ICNotes can be played with the pen by pressing down on the touch screen in the appropriate place. The note will sound for as long as the pressure is maintained and will finish when the pen is lifted. Sliding between notes (glissando - as in the Rolf Harris Stylophone!) is also possible.
The volume is set from the slider at the top of the screen.
The piano's octave range can be altered from the "Pitch" button.
Fine tuning can be performed by altering the scale's base frequency in "Preferences"
The 'tapedeck-like' controls on the keyboard can be used to record (and play back) melodies. After tapping the Record button, everything you play is recorded, up until you tap on the Stop button. Only one tune at a time can be stored within the program, although it's kept on disk and will still be there next time you start up the program.
AUse the Tuner section to tune your instrument. Fine tuning to the frequencies the Series 5 produces can be made in "Preferences".
When tapped, each note button produces a long (several seconds) note at the right frequency, to which you can tune up.
Note that each named note can also be started by pressing the appropriate key on the keyboard.
You can change the octave in which the notes sound using the 'Pitch' button.

Steve Litchfield
sBPiano is
1998-2000, Steve Litchfield.
The original idea for the playable piano came from Fred Sebton, though alas his OPL code has long since been superseded. The Music.opx is
1998 Otfried Chong & RMR Software and is used with their kind permission. The concept of the whole 'musician's toolkit' was inspired by John Neale's Musicbox on the 3a. Andrew Giddings has been absolutely invaluable in tidying up my code and fixing the things that needed to be fixed.
Thanks also to the various beta testers who have made suggestions, and to whoever originally typed in the list of musical terms (I grabbed it from the internet).
BThe most common problem people have with Piano is that the Psion sound system needs a reasonable amount of available voltage to work. If your batteries are shown as 10% or less, you won't get more than a quick squawk out of the keyboard.
Of course, plugging in a mains adaptor overrides the warnings and will let you play on happily with no battery power left at all!
Another common complaint is that the metronome occasionally loses precision lurching around in somewhat drunken fashion at higher tempos. This is thought to be due to issues relating to running an OPL program for a length of time under EPOC and you'll find that by closing the program down and restarting it the problem will go away.
