BPhoneManPro allows you to send and receive SMS and edit the phonebook on your mobile phone using a computer running the EPOC operating system. It supports both infrared and serial connections to your phone. You can also send email messages via SMS
Additional features, supported by some phones, include allowing you to edit operator logos, set up the ringing pattern on the phone and compose your own melody for the phone
s ring. Melodies can be saved, and Ring profiles allow you to quickly set the phone to a saved ring setup
BThere are two ways to connect the EPOC computer to your mobile phone: the method you use depends on the phone
The latest models of phones can connect using infrared, so no cable is required. Older phones require a serial cable. Select the Preferences command on the Tools menu and select the appropriate method for your phone on the Phone page of the dialog
For serial connections you will need to specify a baud rate: this would normally be 19200 for direct connection to phones, and 57600 for connection via a GSM PC-card modem
BBefore using PhoneManPro for the first time, you need to specify what model of phone you are using. This is very important - failure to do this may result in incorrect behaviour and errors occurring. It may also result in loss of data
On the Phone page of the Preferences dialog select your phone from the list. If the phone you are using is not in the list, select Basic GSM phone
If you encounter any problems setting up PhoneManPro to work with your phone, please contact S.G.Software stating the settings in the Preferences dialog, and the make and model of your phone, together with a detailed description of the problem encountered. Contact details can be found in the

help topic
HMost mobile phones have two phonebooks, one stored in the SIM card and one stored in the phone itself, the
Phone memory
. It is preferable to use the SIM card one, since you can then continue to use the phonebook if you transfer your SIM card to another phone
Select Sync with phone
from the Phonebook menu to synchronise the phonebook currently stored in the computer with the one on the phone. Once the phonebook has been read in from the phone, you can either Merge or Replace the phonebook in the computer
The Replace option will replace the phonebook currently stored in the computer with the one on the phone. Any entries stored in the computer that aren
t also stored on the phone will be lost
The Merge option is safer. This will update the phonebook stored on the computer by adding any entries that exist on the phone. For all entries whose name or number has changed on either the computer or the phone, you will be shown a dialog asking whether you wish to Discard, Replace or Add
The Discard option will ignore the entry that is on the phone and keep the one on the computer
The Replace option will replace the entry on the computer with the changed entry on the phone
The Add option will add the changed entry on the phone as a new entry, provided there is space in the phonebook
If necessary after the Merge operation, you will be prompted to update the phone
s phonebook. This will copy back any changed or new entries from the computer to the phone
When copying entries to the phone, all names will be truncated at the length indicated by the phone as the maximum it can store in its memory. Unfortunately this value is only approximate. If you experience errors (such as
String too long
) when copying to the phone, you will need to reduce the maximum length value manually. You can do this using either Phone info or Phone settings|Info on the Tools menu (the command available will depend upon your make and model of phone). Reduce the figure by 2 and try synchronising again. If you find entries are being truncated at some short length, for example 8 characters, try increasing the value. The majority of phones can store around 12 or 14 characters per entry in the SIM card memory, and 16 or 18 in the phone memory
>BUse the Re-arrange command on the Phonebook menu to change the locations of the entries in the phonebook to match their order on-screen. So, the first entry on the list will become Loc. 1 etc. The order of the entries on the screen remains unchanged
To arrange the entries both alphabetically and by location, first tap on the Name column heading to put them into alphabetical order, then use Re-arrange to make the first entry Loc 1 etc
Note: This operation does not affect the phonebook on the phone; you need to use Copy to phone... if you want to update it accordingly
:AThe best way to ensure the phonebook on the phone is up to date is to use Sync with phone
However, if you just wish to update one or a few entries on the phone, select them and use Copy to phone
Note: Copying All entries to the phone will erase any entries on the phone that are not also stored on the computer
lGThe Modify selected command allows you to modify entries in any view (with the exception of SMS views) in a variety of ways
The options available are:
Uppercase
This will convert all the text in the selected entries into capital letters
Capitalise
This will convert each word of the text in the selected entries to start with a capital letter
Internationalise
This will convert any phone numbers in the selected entries into international format. The numbers will be changed so that they start with a + followed by the national code, and the national prefix will be either removed or placed in round brackets depending on which view you are in. For example:
0171 555 1234
will be converted to either:
+44 (0)171 555 1234
+441715551234
Because phonebooks on the phone cannot store round brackets, the latter format is used in phonebook views and the former in the Contacts view (if present)
De-internationalise
This function is the opposite of Internationalise and will convert any phone numbers that are in international format into local format, by removing the + and national code, and adding back the national prefix
Modify number
This function is useful if area codes change. For example you can change all phone numbers starting with 0171 to 020 7 which is the change planned for Inner London numbers in the UK for April 2000
You need to enter both the existing code and the new one into this dialog. For example, to change the area code in the following entry:
+44 (0)171 555 1234
you need to enter (without the quotation marks):
Current:
+44 (0)171
Replacement:
+44 (0)20 7
Into the number change dialog. Note the space after the 171 in the Current line. You can select any number of entries to change in this way at the same time
NOTE: In the phonebook views, you should not enter the (0) or the space, since phonebooks only store the + and the digits, and not the space or brackets
AMost phones have a quick dial facility, where pressing one of the 1-9 keys will dial the corresponding entry in the phonebook. Using the Set up quick dial command on the Phonebook menu, you can select which nine entries in your phonebook are stored in the first nine locations
TIP: If you have set up quick dial numbers in this way and then want to reorder your phonebook, it is advisable to use the Re-arrange|Non quick dial command so that the first nine locations in the phonebook aren
t affected
GBIf you are running PhoneManPro on an ER5 EPOC computer, you can use it to view, create and edit your contacts in exactly the same way as you do in the Contacts program itself. It also allows you to copy contacts to your phonebook
Tap the Switch view button on the Toolbar and move to the Contacts view to see all the contacts that you have already entered in the Contacts program
Use the normal copy and paste commands to copy contacts from this view into the SIM card or phone memory view. They will then be transferred to your phone next time you use the Sync with phone
command
CYou can access files created in the built-in Data program from within PhoneMan. You can use this feature to copy contacts entered in the Data program into your contacts list, or to copy ring-tone melodies to phones which support this feature
To view a Data file, change to the Data view and select Data|Open database from the File menu. If you view a database of melodies, you can simply press Shift+Ctrl+L to load the selected melody into the keyboard editor. You can play the melody, and save it internally within PhoneManPro for transferring to your phone using the Phone settings|Rings command on the Tools menu
If you are using an EPOC ER5 computer, you can copy one or more Data entries to the Contacts store. Select the required entries and use Data|Copy to Contacts on the File menu
APhoneManPro allows you to send your business card in vCard format using Infrared
Use the Contacts page of the Preferences dialog to select your own entry from your list of contacts
Whenever you wish to send this information, use the Infrared|Beam business card command on the Tools menu
BTo set up the service centres to use for sending SMS text messages, select SMS centres
from the SMS menu
Use the dialog allows you to set the default centre for all future SMS messages. It also allows you to edit, delete or add other centres; PhoneManPro can store any number of SMS centres
Note: Changing the default SMS centre does not affect any SMS already in your outbox or draft folder. To change the SMS centre for one of these messages open the message and use the Adv. page of the dialog
Note: You can override the default SMS centre for an individual SMS by using the option on the Adv. page of the New SMS dialog
See the
SMS service centres for email
help topic for details on setting up a service centre to use for sending email SMS messages
JCTo create a new SMS, tap on New SMS on the Toolbar or select this command from the SMS menu
To forward or reply to a previous SMS, highlight the required SMS and press Enter or tap on it
Tip: Pressing Enter in the phone views will start a new SMS addressed to the currently selected phone number(s)
Tip: the first a name enterered will complete the name for you. Pressing Enter a second time will move the cursor to the message editor
In the dialog, enter a Name or number from your phonebook or press Tab to display the contents of the phonebook
When you have finished entering your message, tap Done to place it in the outbox, ready to send
Tap the Send SMS Toolbar button at any time to send all SMS messages currently stored in the outbox
Note: See the
SMS service centres
help topic for information on selecting a default SMS centre
dAYou can create new folders for storing SMS in, and create rules for automatically moving or copying SMS into folders as they arrive or are sent
New folder
on the SMS menu to create a new folder, and
Rules...
to create, edit, delete or rename rules
When an SMS arrives or is sent, the rules are checked in the order they appear in the rules dialog
BIf you frequently need to send an SMS to more than one recipient, you may like to set up a
group
listing all their names so that you can select them all at once in future
You can do this from within the New SMS dialog. First, press Tab on the
Name or number
line to display the Select recipients dialog. Then list all the names for the group in the right hand list, tap the Group button and use
Save group
to give it a meaningful name. From now on, when addressing new SMS messages you can tap the Group button in this dialog to either:
Use group
- replace any names already in the right hand list with the contents of a selected group
Add group
- append the contents of a selected group to the list of recipients
DSMS messages are limited to 160 characters each. If you type more than 160 characters into the Message box of the SMS dialog, your text will be split into a number of separate SMS messages in order to send it. The information on the Length line of the dialog keeps you informed as you type of both the length of your message and the number of separate SMS required to send it
Both PhoneManPro and some modern mobile phones can reassemble multiple SMS, making it easier for the recipient to read the message. For this feature to operate, headers must be sent with each SMS, although this will reduce the space available for text in each SMS to 153 characters
To enable headers for the current SMS only, make sure that Send long SMS headers on the Adv. page of the dialog is checked
To send headers with all your SMS messages by default, select Preferences from the Tools menu and on the SMS page of the dialog make sure that
Send long SMS headers
is checked
Some SMS service centres may reject any SMS messages which you send with headers enabled. If you send an SMS longer than 160 characters and it gets rejected, try sending again after disabling the headers on the Adv. page of the SMS dialog
AIf the phone you are sending SMS to supports receiving ring tones, operator, group or picture-messages, you can send them from PhoneManPro
Use the
New special SMS
menu to create the required type of SMS. Tap on the
to edit the logo using the built in sketch application
16 color BMP files, MBM or Sketch files can be loaded into PhoneManPro
When sending operator logos, you will have to select the network operator that the phone is using before sending the SMS
BYou need to select an email SMS service provider before you can send email SMS messages: see the
SMS service centres for email
help topic for information on how to do this
Select New email SMS from the SMS menu and enter the email address, subject and text. Some service providers may not require you to enter a subject for the email
Note: Email SMS are limited to 160 characters including the address and subject and any header information required by the service provider
Tip: Keep the subject short to give more room for the message text
FOnce you have selected an email SMS service provider, you can send emails via SMS using your mobile phone. This is a lot quicker and easier than logging onto an Internet mail server using an email application
The majority of these charge for sending or receiving emails via SMS, but there are a few free services such as Excell that let you send email via SMS. Details are built into PhoneManPro for Airmail, Excell and other service providers
To set up the service centres to use for sending email SMS messages, select SMS centres
from the SMS menu and move the cursor to the lower line in the dialog
To set up a new email SMS service provider, tap the Add button. You need to know the format required for sending the email as an SMS, which will be available from your service provider
s help text on their web site
For example, if your email SMS provider requires you to send the email by typing the person
s email address, followed by a space and then the text of the email, you should enter the following information into the New email service dialog:
Service: any name you like to identify
Format: <email> <text>
Number: phone number of the provider
@ symbol: the character, if any, required by your service provider in place of @ in email addresses
Because not all phones have an @ symbol accessible from the keypad, when entering email SMS on the phone itself you usually have to type an alternative character, such as an exclamation mark
. PhoneManPro converts any @ symbol you type into the New email SMS dialog into the character you enter here. For most services you can probably leave this blank. Check with your email SMS service provider for details
ATo receive SMS, enable communication to your mobile phone (see the
Connecting to your phone
help topic) and then select the Check for new SMS... menu command. Any SMS stored in the mobile phone which haven't yet been copied to PhoneManPro will be displayed in bold in the SMS inbox
aEYou can save the text of an SMS message to use either as a template for future SMS messages, or if you simply need to send the same SMS frequently. Any number of SMS messages can be saved as templates. Additionally, a template SMS may have up to eight variables, which you can replace with values when you send a copy of that template
To save an SMS as a template, tap the Template button in the New SMS dialog then select Save
To select a previously saved template SMS, tap Template as above then select Use. The selected template will replace any message text already in the New SMS dialog
You may use the following variables in the SMS templates, entered between angle brackets:
<time>
<date>
<num>
<text>
For example, you could save a template:
Meeting arranged for <time> in room <num> on <date>.
When you select that template to use for a new SMS, you will be prompted to enter values for the variables. Cancel the Enter variables dialog if you want to edit the template itself.
Tip: Anything you enter between angle brackets which isn
t one of the four variables listed above will be interpreted as <text>, and the variable name will be used for the prompt in the dialog into which you enter the variable values. For example you
could use <Room> in place of <num> in the above example, which would make it clearer what values are required when the dialog is displayed.
CWith certain makes and models of phone, you can use PhoneManPro to configure the ring setup for the individual lines on your phone. You can configure the rings for Line1, Line2, Fax and Data calls. Each setup can have its own ring type or melody. You can create your own melody using Phone settings|Melodies
on the Tools menu
Use Phone settings|Rings
on the Tools menu to display the current ring setup on your phone. The dialog will let you change the ring settings for each line, plus the overall volume and SMS alert tone
To set a ring to use a melody, set the
line to Melody and select the number on the
Melody number
line. To use a melody you have created, set the
to Own melody and select the melody on the Own melody line on the Master page on the dialog. Pressing Tab on the Own melody line will display the musical keyboard editor as described in the
Editing melodies
help topic
BYou can change the order and widths of the columns in each view independently of each other
To change the order of the columns, tap in the middle of the heading above the column you wish to move, drag it left/right to the required position and release. To change the width of a column, click and drag on the right hand edge of the column
Note: You cannot move the first column
From the Preferences dialog, you can set the width, height and zoom of the Preview window that appears in the Contacts, Data and SMS views
DAYou can choose which features of the program are controlled by the toolbar buttons, apart from the first button which is fixed as Switch view. Use Set up toolbar
on the View menu to select the functions you require on the toolbar for the current view. You can change the set of toolbar buttons for each view independently
GEYour phonebook is likely to contain only a few numbers that can actually receive SMS messages, so to speed up selection of the recipient for an SMS you can make PhoneManPro display only the relevant ones. To do this, set a
phonebook filter
in the SMS page of the Preferences dialog
The text you enter into the Phonebook filter line in the Preferences dialog is compared with the name and number of every entry, and only those entries matching the filter are displayed in the phonebook selector when addressing an SMS
For example, if you identify mobile numbers in the phonebook by entering /M at the end of each entry
s name, then you can set the filter in the Preferences dialog to */M to find only names which end in /M (the * being a wildcard). Then, whenever you create a new SMS message only entries with mobile phone numbers will be offered in the list of possible recipients
Alternatively, you can select only phonebook entries on the same network as yourself by entering filters such as:
44403* 44802* 447803*
using a space to separate them. These would match all entries whose phone number starts with
+44403
+44802
+447803
Note: If you store numbers in the international fomat, as in the example above, do not include the + sign in the filter text.
Note: Filters are case sensitive so a filter
t find entries which contain
BThere is a simple terminal built into PhoneManPro, useful for checking whether your modem or phone is responding to AT commands
Press Shift+Fn+T to open the terminal screen, after which you can type AT commands to your modem/phone. Use Shift+Ctrl+F to change the font
The first thing to do when using the terminal is to type AT and press Enter a few times until the phone or modem responds OK. Then type ATE0 and press Enter
Press Esc to close the terminal screen.
Note: This is a very simple terminal and should not be used to log on to remote services, although it can be used to log on to eg CIX to send a mail manually. It does not support scripting
dBIf you encounter problems with PhoneMan, it can be useful to create a log file. This is a plain text file and can be imported into Word. If contacting S.G.Software about a problem, please send the log file with a description of the problem
Press Shift+Fn+L to start logging. Any operations after this keypress are logged to the file C:\PhoneMan.txt
For example, start PhoneManPro, press Shift+Fn+L and load the phonebook from the phone. Press Shift+Fn+L again to stop logging. All AT commands to and from the phone, together with some PhoneManPro specific debugging information, will be written to the log file
ATo password protect your information in the PhoneManPro program, use Password on the File menu. This protects the data file that contains a copy of your phonebook entries and all the SMS you have sent and received
To remove password protection, select Password and enter the current password. In the Change password dialog, just press Enter to leave both lines blank
Note: If you forget your password, S.G.Software cannot help in restoring the data in your file
Note: Passwords are case sensitive
AUse More|Tidy/archive file on the File menu to copy or move SMS to another PhoneManPro data file. You will be prompted for a date - all SMS received or sent before that date will be copied or moved to the new file
Note: If your main file is password protected, the file containing the tidied SMS will also be protected with the same password
Note: Tidied files can be opened in PhoneManPro in the same way as the main data file
DWith certain makes and models of phone, you can use PhoneManPro to create ring tone melodies
Select Phone settings|Melodies from the Tools menu to display a musical keyboard which you can
to record a melody. Two lengths of note are available: a short tap on a key will produce a short note, a longer tap a long note
The text in the line below the keys is the textual representation of the melody, with lower case letters denoting short notes. (You can use the arrow buttons and the cursor to edit this directly)
Tap Play to play back the melody and Save as to keep it. The Open button opens melodies already saved in PhoneManPro. Any melody saved will be stored in the PhoneManPro data file
Note: To send a melody to the phone, use the Phone settings|Rings menu command and select
Own melody
as the ring type on the required page of the dialog. See the Changing Ring settings topic for more information on setting up rings on the phone
Note: If you select Melodies while viewing a melody database file in the Data view in PhoneManPro, the currently selected melody in that Data file will be automatically transferred to the keyboard for you to play or edit. You need to save it internally in PhoneManPro before you can transfer it to the phone
zANote: With certain makes and models of phone, the following commands are available on the Phone settings cascade from the Tools menu
The Welcome
command allows you to quickly set the text that is displayed when you switch on your phone
Use Set clock to set your phone
s clock to a specific time and date, or Sync clock to set it to the same time and date as the EPOC computer

<time>
<date>
<num>
<text>

Contact details can be found in the

help topic
HMost mobile phones have two phonebooks, one stored in the SIM card and one stored in the phone itself, the

) when copying to the phone, you will need to reduce the maximum length value manually.
<time>
<date>
<num>
<text>
