- 1... PREFACE
- The purpose of the kit is to help your organization to prepare
- for successful business transactions with the Japanese here and
- abroad. The common themes presented are to exercise patience, to
- respect formalities, to expect to spend time establishing a relationship,
- and to be sensitive to the culture.
- The material is presented electronically and the option exists for
- modifiying the text portions with material specific to the needs of
- an individual company. The media is available just-in-time for training

- 4... INSTALLATION AND OPERATION
- INSTALLATION:
- This procedure is to be done by the PC systems administrator
- or the user if there is no administrator.
- Please use the mkdir command to set up a directory by typing
- the following command at the DOS prompt:
- MKDIR C:\JAP
- Then insert the aware diskette into drive A:, and use the following
- command to copy all of the necessary files to your hard disk:
- COPY A:\*.* C:\JAP\*.*
-
- You are now ready to run. There is no requirement for decompression
- of files or other additional steps. If your hard drive is not
- designated as C:, you should substitute the appropriate letter in
- place of the "C" in the previous commands.
- Be sure to store the original diskette in a safe
- place as an archival backup.
-
- OPERATION:
- Invocation:
- The user must set his directory to the JAP subdirectory by typing
- this command from the DOS prompt:
- CD C:\JAP
- The program may then be invoked by typing 'LEARN1' followed by a
- carriage return:
- LEARN1 <CR>
- Allow the initial screens to 'play'.You may use PageUp PageDown or the
- UpArrow and DownArrow for slower paced viewing.
-
-
- Selection Options:
- The program is menu driven. You may use either the slidebar or a
- mouse. Some of the displays are controlled by a timer, in which case it
- is useless to hit return until the animation sequences complete.
-
-

-
- The .DAT files explained below in Section 5 are also
- required. All files which are NOT .DAT files must be left intact and
- unaltered!
-
- 5... TAILORING OF LESSONS FOR UNIQUE INSTRUCTIONAL NEEDS
- The .DAT files supplied here are a database. The instructor may remove
- or add information as he sees fit with the remaining screens and the menu
- serving as a shell. It is suggested that the original .DAT files be
- left alone intact and as delivered on the supplied media. The .DAT files
- copied and stored on the hard disk (and subsequently on the media that
- you use for distribution within your company) are the ones to modify.
- There is a SIZE LIMITATION of 6 windowed screens(about 120 lines)
- due to memory requirements. This means that if you have a .DAT file
- exceeding the size limit, the remaining excess will not appear in
- the scrolled window when the program runs.
-
- The mechanics of modification are to use a text editor such as
- EDIT and use ASCII characters (Alphabetic, numeric and punctuation-
- characters only). Special formating characters such as TABs are not
- to be used (Do not Use Word Perfect). You may enter up to 61
- characters per line. These will be visible in the text windows.
-
- Shown at the end of this section is a list of the files and
- their titles that will appear in the scrolled windows along with
- the window title. These are the only files available for modifica-
- tion.
-
- Example of Modification : insertion of additional text into the
- LABOR.DAT file by invoking EDIT C:\JAP\LABOR.DAT, insert the additional
- lines, and then saving the file on the hard disk before leaving the
- edit program:
- ... [preceding text]...
- A feature of the business culture is amae - indulgence
- and protection of one another. Coworker's idiosyncra-
- sies are to be tolerated. The human being is to be
- respected. Others are to be protected from errors,
- from bearing blame, or losing face. Distinctions
- between management and workers are not as extreme as
- in the United States. A Japanese proverb expressing <--- added information
- worker/manager relationship is: <---
- IF HE WORKS FOR YOU, YOU WORK FOR HIM! <---
