  2. What we call the hardware of the
  3. mind is the brain's biological wir-
  4. ing of as many as 200 billion neu-
  5. rons. The brain's circuitry is or-
  6. ganically organized with great pre-
  7. cision by an enormously complex,
  8. preprogrammed, genetically control-
  9. led system. Hardware functions we
  10. are most concerned with here are
  11. memory and recognition. There are
  12. two types of memory, associative
  13. and nonassociative. The former in-
  14. creases the efficiency of informa-
  15. tion acquisition, storage, and re-
  16. trieval, and the latter collects
  17. ideas over time. Tests J, K, L, and
  18. M measure these skills.
