- THE HARDWARE
- What we call the hardware of the
- mind is the brain's biological wir-
- ing of as many as 200 billion neu-
- rons. The brain's circuitry is or-
- ganically organized with great pre-
- cision by an enormously complex,
- preprogrammed, genetically control-
- led system. Hardware functions we
- are most concerned with here are
- memory and recognition. There are
- two types of memory, associative
- and nonassociative. The former in-
- creases the efficiency of informa-
- tion acquisition, storage, and re-
- trieval, and the latter collects
- ideas over time. Tests J, K, L, and
- M measure these skills.
