  44. 3-Learning Activities:

  46. a1. Look at Picture, Read Word- This is a vocabulary review.  The 
  47. ENTER  KEY replaces the old pictures with new pictures,  and  the 
  48. arrow  keys  move the menu box which causes the  status  line  to 
  49. display  the Text of the selected picture. ESCAPE returns to  the 
  50. previous menu.

  52. b2.  Given Word, Match to Picture- This is a learning  game.  The 
  53. DISPLAY  will not change until the picture that matches the  word 
  54. is  selected (by using the ARROW KEYS and then  pressing  ENTER.)
  55. PRESS ESCAPE to return to the previous menu.

  57. When a Correct Selection is made, a random  Musical selection  is
  58. played until a key is pressed.
  59.  
  60. c3.  Given  Picture,  Match to Word- This  is  the  complementary
  61. learning  game to choice b. A Picture is displayed and the  arrow 
  62. keys  are  used to toggle through 9-choices which  are  displayed 
  63. caption  by  caption  in the status area at  the  bottom  of  the 
  64. screen.  When the correct selection is made and the ENTER KEY  is 
  65. pressed, a Random Musical Reward is given as reinforcement.

  72. MEHELP  is  available by pressing F1 at almost any point  in  the 
  73. program

  76. Detail and Program Spec:
  77.  
  78. The opening screen is controlled with the Arrow Keys and   offers 
  79. the  choice of Three-Second Languages and a Mother Tongue. As  it 
  80. is now configured, "METOO" uses English as the Mother Tongue, but 
  81. this  can  be  over-ridden by changing the  external  ascii  file 
  82. "PICLIST" which is the dictionary of words and picture names. 
  83.  
  84. Even  this HELP file, "MEHELP", can be changed simply by using  a 
  85. text  editor  or  even replaced with a  customized  help  in  any 
  86. required  language  so  long as the  replacement  file  is  named 
  87. "MEHELP".
  88.  
  89. The opening screen and menu screens are external files of  garden 
  90. variety   CGA  Resolution  .PCX  type  and  can  be  editted   or 
  91. alternately   replaced   by  either  BSAVED   images   or   ZSOFT 
  92. PCPAINTBRUSH  files,  again allowing for  open  customization  of 
  93. METOO.EXE.  In order to work,the replacement files must bear  the 
  94. SAME  NAME as the original menus. They are  LOGO.PCX,  METOO.PCX, 
  95. MENU1.PCX, MENU2.PCX,and MENU3.PCX.

  97. Erin and I made the small graphics panels primarily using  Eugene 
  98. Ying's  PCPG and Later we colorated them in Logitech's  PaintShow 
  99. Plus.  Final processing to BSAVED GRAPHICS arrays was done  using 
  100. my UTILITY FRAG.EXE. My reason for using the RAW DUMP rather than 
  101. run  length  encoded PCX FORMAT was primarily one  of  load  time 
  102. within  the program. The files are tiny anyway so that was not  a 
  103. concern. The program will also accept the GRAPHICS arrays of  the 
  104. type  used  by TURBO or MICROSOFT C's getimage()  and  putimage() 
  105. should these be saved to disc in raw form.
  106.  
  107. The CGA  and HERCULES displays are both supported.
  108.  
  109. I  have  plans for accents of all types for the next  version  of 
  110. "METOO" but this version uses only a standard english font, (with 
  111. apologies to the purists out there.)
  112.  
  113. The  external  MUSIC  (".SND") files are  unpacked  binary  files 
  114. containing  records  of  3  byte  packets,  with  a  word   value 
  115. representing frequency and a byte value representing duration  as 
  116. it  applies  to  the  sound  statement  which  accepts  these  2- 
  117. arguments.  The  end  of music place marker is a  word  value  of 
  118. 0xffff.
