  17.                              Welcome to PC-FasType
  18.                              =====================

  20.           PC-FasType is a typing tutorial program SPECIFICALLY designed for
  21.      the three most popular styled keyboards sold with computers running
  22.      under MS-DOS.  The INSTALLATION instructions below will get you up and
  23.      running quickly.  This readme file covers both the CGA and MONO
  24.      versions of the program.

  26.           PC-FasType/CGA requires COLOR.  You MUST have a Color/Graphics
  27.      Adapter Card (CGA) or equivalent (EGA/VGA) on your computer or
  28.      PC-FasType/CGA won't work properly.
  29.  
  30.           PC-FasType/MONO on the other hand will work on a PC with ANY kind
  31.      of monitor - color OR monochrome.   If your PC is not equipped for
  32.      color graphics display, then you should be using PC-FasType/MONO.  It
  33.      can be run on any PC regardless of the kind monitor used.
  34.      PC-FasType/MONO uses character-based line-graphics to simulate the
  35.      screen keyboard display.

  38.      HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
  39.           PC-FasType is distributed on one 360KB 5.25" floppy, or one 720KB
  40.      3.50" mini-floppy and requires the following minimum equipment to run
  41.      properly:
  42.  
  43.           o  IBM PC, XT, AT, PS/2; any Intel 286, 386, 486 or compatible.
  44.           o  MS-DOS - Version 3.0 and up
  45.           o  For the CGA version: Color Graphics capability (CGA/EGA/VGA)
  46.           o  For the MONO version:  any kind of monitor will do .
  47.           o  A hard-disk and at least one Floppy disk drive; 3.5" or 5.25"
  48.           o   -or- 2 Floppy disk drives (with or without a hard drive).
  49.           o  Keyboard: either the 101-Key Enhanced with the bar-shaped
  50.              enter key, the AT-Style with the large L-shaped enter key, or
  51.              the original XT-style.

  54.                     ****   INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS   ****
  55.  
  56.           If you downloaded this version of PC-FasType from a BBS then all
  57.      you had to do was uncompress the files, so you can ignore this
  58.      section.   If you received PC-FasType on a disk then read on.
  59.  
  60.           This release marks the first time that PC-FasType has to be
  61.      INSTALLED in order to use it effectively.  The program named
  62.      INSTALL.EXE on the distribution disk provides a very easy to use menu-
  63.      driven installation procedure.  Please read the on-screens prompts
  64.      carefully.

  66.           You can install PC-FasType onto another floppy, onto a hard disk,
  67.      or from one hard disk sub-directory to another sub-directory, or even
  68.      from a hard disk to a floppy.  The easiest installation is from the
  69.      distribution floppy disk to a hard disk sub-directory.  This can be
  70.      done by inserting the PC-FasType Shareware disk into drive A: and
  71.      making A: the default drive.  Specify the target drive of the hard
  72.      disk where you want the program installed, and when the install
  73.      program starts, just make the appropriate menu selections:

  76.  
  77.           When you select the "Install PC-FasType" menu item, the INSTALL
  78.      program will install PC-FasType and all its documentation files in a
  79.      sub-directory called \FASTYPE.
  80.  
  81.      Other installation variations are:
  82.  
  83.                A:> install b: - install PC-FasType from A: to B:
  84.                A:> install     - the program will prompt for the drive.
  85.                B:> install a:  - install from B: to A:
  86.                B:> install c:  - install from B: to hard disk C:
  87.  
  88.                C:\TMP> install d:  - install from hard disk C: to D:
  89.  
  90.                          (this example assumes you've first copied the
  91.                          shareware distribution files into the sub-
  92.                          directory named \TMP on drive C:)
  93.  
  94.           If you're installing PC-FasType onto 360KB floppy diskettes,
  95.      you'll need two (2) freshly formatted 360kb floppy disks without DOS
  96.      installed and NO bad sectors.  Prepare two diskette labels entitled
  97.      "PC-FasType Working Copy" and "PC-FasType Documentation Files" and
  98.      attach them to each of the floppies.  The install program will create
  99.      the "Working Copy" disk with the program, data, and tutorial files,
  100.      and then the "Documentation Files" disk with the User's Guide and
  101.      related documentation files on it.

  103.           If you're installing on a larger capacity floppy, then you'll
  104.      only need one diskette.  This includes the following: 720kb 3.5",
  105.      1.2mb 5.25", and 1.44mb 3.5" floppies.  These disks will hold ALL of
  106.      PC-FasType's uncompressed files.  You can label the high-capacity
  107.      disk as "PC-FasType Working Copy & Docs".

  109.           If you're an experienced PC user, you can bypass the install
  110.      program and just run either FT43CGA.EXE or FT13MONO.EXE and specify a
  111.      target drive or subdirectory where you want the files uncompressed.
  112.      In this example, you can type:
  113.  
  114.                     A> ft43cga -ec:\fastype
  115.  
  116.      and PC-FasType/CGA will be installed in C:\FASTYPE.  You can do the
  117.      same with the compressed User's Guide - FT43DOC.EXE or FT13DOC.EXE.

  120.      TO RUN:
  121.           Before you can run PC-FasType, it must be "installed" on either
  122.      another floppy disk or your hard drive.  See the INSTALLATION
  123.      INSTRUCTIONS above for more information.

  125.           After you've installed PC-FasType, you can run the program using
  126.      one of the following commands.  Make sure the default drive is either
  127.      your "PC-FasType Working Copy" floppy disk, or your hard-disk sub-
  128.      directory where PC-FasType was installed.

  130.      Just type:

  132.             ENFT to start PC-FasType with the 101-Key Enhanced keyboard
  133.             ATFT to start PC-FasType with the AT-Style keyboard
  134.             PCFT to start PC-FasType with the old XT-Style keyboard
  135.  
  136.           and press the ENTER key.  For example, the command:

  138.                          A:> enft <enter>
  139.  
  140.           will start PC-FasType from the A: floppy drive for the 101-Key
  141.      Enhanced keyboard.

  144.      WHAT'S NEXT:
  145.           PRESS ANY KEY TO GET PAST THE TITLE SCREEN AND SHAREWARE
  146.      INFORMATION SCREEN.  After these screens are displayed and the tables
  147.      loaded, the Main Menu will be displayed.  The menu selector bar will
  148.      be resting on the 'Begin Typing' selection.  Just press the Enter key
  149.      or function key F10 to start a typing drill of the HOME keys.  To
  150.      return to the Main Menu during typing,  press the Escape key.

  153.      WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
  154.           For DRILLS:  Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys
  155.      (ASDF JKL;) and type each letter as you are prompted for it.  The
  156.      program selects the letters randomly.  The number of characters you
  157.      have to successfully type is displayed before you start.  When the
  158.      drill is finished your WPM and other statistics will be displayed in
  159.      the text panel.

  161.           For EXERCISES:  lines of text will be displayed above the screen
  162.      keyboard; type each character pointed to by the house-shaped cursor
  163.      () and when you reach the  symbol or end of the line, press the
  164.      enter key (for "carriage-return"), or the space bar.  When you finish
  165.      typing the exercise your WPM and other statistics will be displayed in
  166.      the text panel.

  169.      SELECTING MENU ITEMS:
  170.           Use the arrow keys (cursor keys) to move the menu selector bar up
  171.      and down the menu.  Select the drill, exercise, or option by pressing
  172.      the enter key when the item you want is highlighted by the menu
  173.      selector bar.  You can use the function keys as a short-cut.

  176.      WHILE RUNNING:
  177.           MENUS:
  178.             There are 5 drill, exercise, and feature selection menus and 3
  179.             sub-menus for selecting additional keys to learn.  The primary
  180.             menus can be displayed by pressing function keys F1 to F5
  181.             anytime while the screen keyboard is displayed.

  183.           <Esc>ape key:
  184.             Pressing the Escape key anytime during a drill or exercise will
  185.             cause the drill or exercise to terminate and your current WPM
  186.             to be displayed; pressing the Escape key again will display the
  187.             menu where you started the exercise.

  189.           QuickHELP:
  190.             ALL menus have the QuickHELP Facility available.  For all
  191.             menus, the function key F1 is always the HELP key.  When you
  192.             select HELP, a QuickHELP Facility  Menu will be displayed; the
  193.             selector bar will rest on the item matching your help request.
  194.             Follow the instructions given on the bottom of the menu.

  197.      EVALUATION PERIOD:
  198.           You are licensed to operate PC-FasType on your PC for testing and
  199.      evaluation as to its usefulness to you, on a trial basis for 30 days.
  200.      We believe this to be a fair and equitable time period for evaluation
  201.      and we trust your good judgement and sense of fair play in making a
  202.      decision regarding registration.

  205.      DOCUMENTATION:
  206.           The PC-FasType User Guide is included on the distribution disk in
  207.      a compressed format.  The INSTALL program will let you uncompress and
  208.      view it on-screen, or let you print it on your printer.  It's about 66
  209.      pages long, but if you register, you'll receive a handsomely printed
  210.      and bound User Guide.

  229.      DATED SOFTWARE:
  230.           If today's date (the date you are reading this) is a year or more
  231.      later than the file dates on this distribution disk than please
  232.      contact Trendtech Corporation for information about a more current
  233.      version of PC-FasType.  Shareware tends to "acquire a life of its own"
  234.      once it's distributed; not all vendors will bother to acquire the
  235.      latest version from the author.  That is why you should buy Shareware
  236.      from a disk vendor who is an authorized "Associate Member of the
  237.      A.S.P."

  239.           The Single-User registration fee and all site and right-to-copy
  240.      licensing fees are guaranteed through Dec. 31, 1995.  If you're
  241.      reading this file now and 1995 is history, chances are there's been a
  242.      registration fee increase.  Contact us for availability and pricing.

  246.           You can only be sure of getting a top-quality virus-free version
  247.      of any ASP Shareware product by obtaining your copy directly from the
  248.      author, or from a disk vendor who is an Associate Member of the
  249.      Association of Shareware Professionals, or from a reputable BBS
  250.      service.  Be suspicious of any program you download from a BBS or of a
  251.      disk obtained from a local disk vendor, whose file dates or copyright
  252.      notices are more than two years old.  If it's a Shareware product,
  253.      contact the author directly for information about current versions.

  256.      TO PRINT THIS FILE:
