  1.         THE TWO MONKS
  2. Two monks on pilgrimage came to a ford of a river.
  3. There they saw a girl dressed in all her finery and
  4. obviously not knowing what to do, for the river was
  5. high and she did not want her clothes ruined. Without
  6. more ado, one of the monks took her on his back, carried
  7. her across, and put her down on dry ground.

  9. Then the monks continued on their way. But the other
  10. monk started complaining: 'Surely it is not right to
  11. touch a woman; it is against the commandments to have
  12. close contact with women; how can you go against the
  13. rules for monks!" and so on in a steady stream. The
  14. monk who had carried the girl walked along silently, but
  15. finally he remarked: 'I set her down by the river. But
  16. you are still carrying her'.
