Miscellaneous Last Minute Items
WARNINGS:
Because this program provides the user with great potential to expedite
the organization and management of directories and files, it also enables
the user to do great harm to themselves if they do not think about what
they are doing. The following warnings pertain:
1. MOVE Option (option 'M') - Please be very careful when using the
move option not to 'move' critical system and hidden files unless
you are sure you know what you are doing. DO NOT UNDER ANY
CIRCUMSTANCE attempt to move the critical operating system files
("msdos.sys" & "io.sys" or similar on your system). Such files
(found in the root directory of your boot drive) need to be located
in specific positions on your disk to enable proper booting of the
computer. Moving such files could prevent you from being able to
boot your system.
2. DELETE Option (option 'Alt-D') - Please be aware that currently the
default answer to the "Are your sure you want to delete these
files?" question in the delete option is YES. If you really DO NOT
want to delete ALL THE CURRENTLY TAGGED FILES, then answer the
question with a "N" or hit the "ESC" key. Hitting any other key
(including the carriage return key) will delete the tagged files.
3. Hitting the ESCape key or "clicking" the OPTION/"ESC" button during
the Copy, Move or Delete files options will terminate the specified
option. One additional file, may be copied, moved or deleted prior
to the operation being terminated. If, however, the user has
specified ALL FILES to be DELETED, the terminate delete option WILL
NOT be successful as a faster method is used to delete files if ALL
FILES (in 1 directory) are specified for deletion.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. This program depends heavily on successfully reading and writing
global/drive data to files, the following procedure should be kept
in mind. Should the user experience any hangups after initially
successful use of the program, it is recommended that the user
delete the "ds_globl.log", "ds_drv_?.log" and, as a last resort, the
"ds_prog.def" files. The program will create the foregoing files if
it does not find them and this may clear up any hangups should
one or more of those files get messed up during a write file
operation.
2. Users of previous versions of this program should ensure they remove
all files from any previous version of the program to a backup
floppy so that this new version will not attempt to use outdated
files. You CAN copy over the "DS_PROG.DEF" file from a previous
version to this version 4.21. This should preserve your defined
macros and directory links; however, REVIEW YOUR DEFAULTS (USING
ALT-F10) PRIOR TO USING THEM, AS VERSION 4.21 SHOULD CONVERT THE
FILE FORMAT FROM A PREVIOUS VERSION TO 4.21 WHEN YOU REVIEW THEM. DO
NOT copy the "DS_GLOBL.LOG" file from a previous version to this
version.
3. OPERATION UNDER WINDOWS 3.0 - If you are experiencing problems using
the program under Windows and have DS setup to use EMM memory for
data storage (see Program Limits "Ctrl-L" option), try changing the
DS setup to NOT USE EMM. You may have to set the DS Program Limits
option to not use EMM >>> PRIOR <<< to starting Windows.
REQUESTS:
1. This program was DEVELOPED on a PC which is NOT connected to a net-
work. Additionally, the author does not have access to a network
for testing. Should users experience problems running the program
on a network, don't assume the problems are already known or cannot
be corrected. If made aware of the network problems the author can
sometimes still solve the problem without direct access to the net-
work. It would be beneficial if the network administrator (more
knowledgeable than the normal user) could discuss the problem with
the author. The author is interested in improving network
performance of the program and would welcome hearing from network
administrators who would be willing to work with the author on
improving network performance.
LATE CHANGES:
1. Upon returning from any of the below listed commands the DS program
does a "SOFTWARE" Mouse reset to ensure the mouse retains its
characteristics within DS. Should it become necessary to do a
HARDWARE Mouse reset or RE-ENABLE the Mouse Software Driver because
a spawned program has disabled the mouse, the user can select the
"CTRL_B" (reBoot mouse) option. The mouse HARDWARE reset is NOT
executed routinely after spawning programs with the below listed
options because the software reset is faster and works in the
majority of cases.
"X" "ALT_X" "L" "ALT_L" Ctrl_F1 thru Ctrl_F9
"C" "ALT_C" "P" "ALT_P" Shft_F1 thru Shft_F9
"E" "ALT_E" Alt_F1 thru Alt_F9
A popup window displays a message that the "CTRL_B" reboot has been
selected but the message disappears immediately upon termination of
the reboot.
