│ 1. THE SDN PROJECT └──────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The SDN Project stands for "Shareware Distribution Network" at the same
time it embodies a concept of author, sysop and user cooperation through
the shareware concept in service to the ameture communication community.
As such, the SDN Project stands for that cooperation among the good
people that make it work, it is thought of as a public trust with it's
origin and organizational center as The SDN Project BBS. SDN is a member
of the International File Distribution Cooperative (IFDC) and voluntarily
cooperates with their efforts.
As founder, all legal rights of copyright for SDN specific material so
noted as (c) Copyright in the SDN Project name belong to Ray L. Kaliss.
All rights to license the service mark SDN International (sm) and SDNet
belong to Ray L. Kaliss. All rights to appoint managers, set and
publish official policy, rest with Ray L. Kaliss as Project Manager.

│ 2. THE CORE NETWORK └──────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Over the years, SDN activity has been passed from node to node not only
through official SDNet systems but also through non-official systems.
This has resulted in a dedicated world wide 'core' network of official
sites linked together through direct and secured routing and a fringe
network outside of SDN managment. SDN policy and guidelines are only
applicable to the core network of official nodes who have agreed to
cooperation and it is only these node that should be registered as
official SDN sites.
Star and Regional policy may allow official SDNet sites to feed
non-official systems (inquire of your Star sysop for his Star policy),
non-registered systems are not automaticly members of the core and
registered network in this way, but must meet other critira and SDN
manager approval.
SDN file areas and echo should not be on common carriers such as the
FileBone or any carrier where activity is isolated from management.
╒═════════════════╕
│ 3. SDN MANAGERS └──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
The management of SDNet activity is accomplished by the guidance of
volunteer sysops under the authority of The SDN Project Manager.
Managers are appointed, elected or removed at the option of the manager
directly above in hierarchy structure. When a manager is ready to step
down from management position he should first inform the manager above
him and recommend a replacement for his position. It is courtesy for
links not to be severed until they can first be routed to the new manager
so none are orphaned.
Because of the high level of cooperation SDN and SDS have had over the
years, both networks are complimentry, merged and cooperative in
principles while publishing individual policies. Sysops who are official
members of both services, along with IFDC members, are to be considered
prime canidates for SDN management positions.
╒═════════════════════╕
─────┘ 3.1 PROJECT MANAGER └────────────────────────────────────────────────
The SDN Project Manager has responsibility of the overall guidance of the
network in it's activity. These responsibilities embrace the public
aspects of SDNet, policy, author contacts, publicity, contacts with other
organizations and most importantly - processing software for
distribution.
The Project Manager is moderator and chairman of the SDN_BOD echo and
consults the advice the members of the BOD when forming policy.
╒════════════════════╕
─────┘ 3.2 STARS MANAGERS └──────────────────────────────────────────────────
Primary distribution is accomplished via direct connection of 'Star
Systems' to the SDN Project BBS. Stars are netmail capable bulletin
board system chosen for reliability and geographic location, they are the
first line in distribution and as such are given direct access priority
to the daily distributions originating from The SDN Project. In most
cases, Regional Managers should connect directly to appointed Star
systems to receive the SDN activity, exceptions are made only with Star
Manager approval.
SDN Star sysops may exercise the right to operate regions under thier
coordination via a Star policy they may form. Star policy should not
contridict international policy published by The SDN Project.
╒═══════════════════════╕
─────┘ 3.3 REGIONAL MANAGERS └───────────────────────────────────────────────
Each SDN region corresponds to a subdivision of the territory serviced by
one of the Stars. Coordinating each region is a SDN-Regional Manager.
SDN uses geographical boundries by states, providence or country to make
this easy. This manager is responsible for appointing SDN-Net Managers
on local net levels. Regional Managers should make effort to assure SDN
activity is represented and available to all local nets in their regions
and in most cases supplies direct link feeds for the core network.
Regional Managers should also take steps to see that all network
affiliations are included in SDN activity. SDN is an inter-network
adventure and has no particular affiliation with any individual network.
Regional Managers should have (but are not required) #CM systems with up
to date netmail capabilities, high speed modems (14.4k HST or HST-DS or
14.4k V.32bis is recommended) and enough disk space to hold a few months
worth of SDN files. Tolerance, patience and a general attitude that all
this is supposed to be a fun hobby helps. They should be brave, thrifty,
clean, virgins... (just kidding)
Regional Managers should recieve their SDN files and echo directly from
their SDN Star systems, other arrangements can be made with their Star's
approval. Regional Managers must be registered SDN sites, assist in
approving other registered sites and compile thier section of the
SDNetList file attaching it on time to their Star link. They also should
be willing to assist inquiring nodes from their region on getting SDN
links and encourage non-registered nodes they may consider suitable to
become registered.
╒══════════════════╕
─────┘ 3.4 NET MANAGERS └───────────────────────────────────────────────────
The SDN-Net Manager is on the front line of distribution. Under the
guidance and by the authority of the Regional Manager he manages
distribution to his local net and may cover other local nets. The Net
Manager also assist in approving and registering SDN sites. He should be
willing to assist nodes find SDN links and encourage registration.
╒════════════════════╕
│ 4. MANAGEMENT ECHO └───────────────────────────────────────────────────────
Management sysops participate in only a few SDN echos message areas. In
these echos experiences and any problems are shared, communications with
higher management are maintained and most of what becomes policy is born.
The SDN-Management echos are:
SDN_BOD - Moderator is The SDN Project Manager Participants of this echo
are Star sysops and regional manager, others that may be invited by the
Project Manager. This echo is restricted and not to be made avalible to
the general public.
SDN_SYSOP - Used by all SDN sysops and managers for communication. This
echo is restricted to registered SDN sysops only and is not open to the
general public.
╒══════════════════════════╕
│ 5. SDNETLIST AND REGNODE └─────────────────────────────────────────────────
SDN published a monthly listing of all systems that are registered as
officialy participating SDN distribution sites. Managers are required to
be sure that systems applying for registration meet the minumimum
requirments before being approved.
If any manager approves any node he feeds meets registration
requirments.. and thereby makes that site a registered, official member
of the core SDNet.. the manager must first verify that SDN Policy and
the SDN Author kit is posted, connection security is in place, that the
30-Day Hold Rule is followed, hatching policy is understood, SDN file
areas are segregated from uploads, SDN echo is flowing and that the site
is of a flavor complimentry to the SDN cooperative and friendly concept.
A step breakdown of these requirments follows.
Receive your SDN activity from another direct link site, one
already registered and approved as part of the SDN core.
Permanently post SDN policy and SDN author information kit,
and update these versions when revised by The SDN Project.
They are the soul of the network.
A file area or areas dedicated to SDN files, open for
downloading. Uploading by users into SDN areas is prohibited.
Received .SDN files must be held for thirty days with out
re-compression or change.
Carry SDN echo message areas.
Register with your SDN manager on a once per month bases.
Poll your registered SDN feed site no less than twice a week.
A high speed modem is recommended.
All managers must use RegNode software to keep track of registered
official nodes to be listed in the publicly published SDNetList and
forward the compiled list once a month for inclusion in the total listing
of registered sites. Only boards published in the monthly SDNetList are
considered members of SDNet and the 'core' network. The latest version
of RegNode is sent down SDN_SYST file area and posted at The SDN Project.
It is avalible by file request from 1:141/840fidonet via magic name
"REGNODE" and should be avalible from other management nodes.
The Nodelist UFlags of USDN and SDN should not be used.
