The SelectWare System
Summer 1990
USER GUIDE
This guide provides information on the features of The
SelectWare System.
Quick Start
How do I move through the System (what does what?):
Cursor control keys are used to move through current
selections and scroll through text. The ENTER key is used
to make your selection. The ESC key can be used to back
up. Function keys [F2] through [F6] are used to review
information on products and run product demonstrations.
[F1] is the help key. The function keys do not require
you to hit ENTER.
Mouse button assignments are simple. The left button is
used to highlight and select options, and the right button
is the same as ESC. The mouse can be used on icons,
options boxes and to select a product in INDEX SEARCH mode.
How is the screen organized?
Your current options are displayed in boxes along the left
hand side of the screen. The large blue area is used to
display information about the currently elected option.
Product information and text are displayed here. The area
at the top displays information on the current menu, and
category or product. The light blue bar near the bottom of
the screen shows currently available functions. The bottom
line tells you what you can do at specific points in the
program and also displays messages.
Key icons are used to show available options. Mouse users
can click on these to perform the corresponding keyboard
operations.
Overview
The SelectWare System was designed to help you evaluate
software. Its features allow you to select, review and
compare a variety of software packages. Three concepts
employed throughout the System are SEARCH MODES,
CATEGORIES, and PROFILES. Understanding them will help
speed your search for software.
SEARCH MODES - Products can be located on The SelectWare
System in one of two ways. First, you can move through a
menu of product categories to locate the type of product
you want to review. This search method is best when you
want to evaluate a group of products. Second, if you know
the product you are looking for, you can choose it from an
indexed list.
CATEGORIES - Products on The SelectWare System are grouped
by logical category. So, whether you find the product by
using the category search method, or by choosing it from
the indexed list, you will end up in a product category.
Here you can compare products, review information about
them, and run their demonstrations (if available).
PROFILES - These provide important information on the
products in each category. Three standard profiles are
provided for each product: the COMPANY profile, the PRODUCT
profile, and the TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS profile. You can
compare the same profile information for products in a
category by scrolling through the products. Additionally,
a fourth information source called the OVERVIEW TEXT is
available. OVERVIEW TEXT is a body of text submitted by
the software publisher for each of their products. It
tells you more about the products and demonstrations on the
System.
