  31. The SBI list is a comprehensive guide to BBS systems accessible by telnet
  32. and/or rlogin on the Internet, and is updated monthly.  The files that
  33. make up the list are available for download from various locations
  34. (outlined in "Where to find the SBI files"), using a wide variety of
  35. methods.  To make this posting complete, I've included the most of main
  36. files that make up the actual archive.

  38. As of the 3/95 list, the -detailed- "Guide to Internet BBS's is
  39. no longer available via Usenet due to its ever-increasing size.  However,
  40. I strongly urge anyone interested in Internet BBS's to get a copy of the
  41. detailed listing, which includes a great deal of additional information
  42. about each BBS than is listed in this posting.  A WEB version of the
  43. detailed listing is also available, and provides a "guided tour" of
  44. Internet BBS's.  To get a copy of the detailed list, or for information
  45. about the WEB page, see the section "Where to find the SBI Files",
  46. included in this posting.

  147. WHY ANOTHER INTERNET BBS LIST?
  148. ------------------------------
  149. The answer to this is simple - other internet BBS lists mostly contain
  150. government or educational based BBS's.  They are not what most "BBS'ers"
  151. would usually call a "BBS" - which are very diverse and colorful systems
  152. that offer just about everything - messages, files, games, chat, and other
  153. services - and up until recently, were mostly accessible via long distance
  154. phone calls!  This is a list of "real" BBS's accessible via TELNET,
  155. RLOGIN, or WEB on the Internet.
  156.  
  157. We feel a good and FREE listing of these systems will not only help promote 
  158. BBS's on the 'net, but also act as an invaluable aid to the new Internet 
  159. user trying (and sometimes desperately searching) for useful and *fun* 
  160. systems to visit out in cyberspace.  This list does *not* contain any 
  161. opinions or editorials of the systems listed - it is merely a listing, with 
  162. details provided (where possible) by the BBS sysops themselves.

  165. HOW DO I ACCESS THESE BBS'S VIA THE INTERNET?
  166. ---------------------------------------------
  167. This "guide" is not designed to be a tutorial of "how to use the
  168. Internet", nor is it a guide to "how to get access to the Internet".
  169. There are hundreds of "help" files available on the network, or on your
  170. favorite BBS to help you out.   Most of the systems listed in this list
  171. offer Internet access, and can be called using a modem and phone line.
  172. Once you get setup on one of these systems (or gain access to the Internet
  173. through some other means), you can access most of the systems listed by
  174. using a "TELNET" client.  This works differently for different systems,
  175. but one common example would be:
  176.  
  177. telnet <host name>   (ex: telnet boardwatch.com)
  178. or
  179. telnet <ip address>  (ex: 199.84.216.1)
  180.  
  181. Some systems integrate "telnet" into a menu prompt, which after execution
  182. will simply ask you to enter the host name or IP address.
  183.  
  184. Some systems also offer the ability to use RLOGIN for the same purpose as
  185. TELNET.  I'd suggest you try TELNET first...
  186.  
  187. Another method is to telnet via a WWW page.  If you have access to the
  188. Web, you can use this URL - http://dkeep.com/sbi.htm  You will also
  189. need a "telnet" client.  Some browsers have them built-in, but most
  190. don't.  Off of the SBI Home Page is a link to various sites with some 
  191. decent clients.

  193. For Web-based BBSs, you can access them using any graphical WEB
  194. browser.  I'd recommend Netscape for the highest level of compatibility.
  195.  
  196. Some BBSs require "special" proprietary clients to access them via the
  197. net.  See the BBS description for details on these systems.
  198.  
  199. SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT FILE TRANSFERS:
  200. ---------------------------------
  201. Even though most of the BBS's listed support "outgoing" FTP, many of the
  202. "PC" based systems listed here do not support FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
  203. TO their PC-Based file systems (which is where most of the files are).
  204. One solution for those that use dial-up accounts for their internet access
  205. (where the user dials into the service with a PC using a communications
  206. package such as Procomm or Qmodem), is to use ordinary "Z-modem" once
  207. telnetted into the BBS. However, in order for this to work, you MUST USE
  208. 8-BIT BINARY MODE for your telnet session, or rlogin using the -8 command
  209. line parameter.  Different "telnet" and "rlogin" clients handle mode
  210. settings in their own way, so check with your service, documentation, or
  211. look thru your help files to see how this is done.  Many telnet clients
  212. use "toggle binary" to set 8-bit mode.  
  213.  
  214. I've accomplished transfer rates of 1800 cps via telnet on a 14.4
  215. connection - so it IS possible.  Granted, the Internet is a fickle place 
  216. when it comes to throughput, so your actual rates will vary.
  217.  
  218. If you are on a "dumb" terminal that is logged into a Host computer
  219. (like a mini or mainframe), then you have no file transfer protocols
  220. (other than FTP) available to you while in a telnet session, so regular 
  221. BBS file transfers will not be possible.

  224. FILE TRANSFERS WITH SLIP/PPP
  225. ----------------------------
  226. For those users with a SLIP/PPP connection, a great program called
  227. "ComT" allows you to redirect a comm port to be a telnet socket!  This
  228. allows you to use ANY standard Windows-based communications software to
  229. telnet to a an SBI BBS and then use a regular download protocol (such
  230. as Zmodem) for file transfers!  The ComT program is available at the
  231. dkunix.dkeep.com FTP site as COMT.ZIP.  Shareware.
  232.  
  233. Another package called "CommNet" has just become available.  Unlike
  234. ComT, it is a complete communications package in itself, specializing
  235. in SLIP/PPP telnet connections.  It features a phone book for dial-up
  236. AND telnet connections, and supports high speed Zmodem and Ymodem-G
  237. file transfers.  You can get a "demo" copy via FTP at ftp.radient.com
  238. Registration costs $34.95.
  239.  
  240. For OS/2 users, there are communications drivers called "SIO", and a
  241. communications interface program called VMODEM.  VMODEM, along with the
  242. SIO drivers, create a "virtual comm port" (similar to COMT for WIN), 
  243. that allows any OS/2 communications program to "dial" a telnet address
  244. (ie, ATDT129.45.10.2).  The drivers and programs can be found at most
  245. any OS/2 FTP site, including "hobbes.nmsu.edu" and "ftp-os2.cdrom.com".
  246.  
  247. There are also several new SLIP (Winsock compatible) TELNET clients
  248. with built-in Z-modem!  The best of these is Neterm, and is avialable
  249. from the SBI Home page on the WEB.  Neterm also has some of the best
  250. ANSI-BBS terminal emulation out there.  HIGHLY recommended!
  251.  
  252. NEW for 1996: Netterm now includes ALL SBI BBSs in a telnet-phone
  253. directory for easy telnetting!  Netterm and the telnet-phone book are
  254. all available at the SBI home page.

  298. HOW TO BECOME PART OF THE SBI LIST:
  299. -----------------------------------

  301. There is no fee required to become a part of this list.  The ONLY
  302. requirements are:
  303.  
  304. 1. The BBS should be privately owned (no Freenets, and no University BBS's).
  305.    BBSs that are privately owned, but receive free Internet access
  306.    through a government site will be considered on a case-by-case
  307.    basis.  Government-run BBSs will also be considered on a
  308.    case-by-case basis.
  309.  
  310. 2. The BBS must be accessible on the Internet via TELNET, RLOGIN, WEB, 
  311.    and/or Special Client. This means you must be able to actually LOGIN 
  312.    to the BBS through the Internet. 
  313.  
  314. 3. It must BE a "BBS" of some kind - sites that provide internet
  315.    services, must also have a variety of local services.  This is not a
  316.    listing of mere "internet providers".
  317.  
  318. 4. The BBS must be in operation "24 hours" a day, excluding maintenance
  319.    and mail-run times, and Internet accessibility must be active during
  320.    normal BBS operating time.  (For example, sites that connect to the 
  321.    Internet for only couple of hours a day are NOT on this list.)

  323. 5. The BBS must accept new users.  What's the point in advertising a
  324.    "closed" system that won't let anyone login?  If your BBS does not
  325.     describe exactly how to login as a new user, then you must include 
  326.     that information in your listing.

  328. We also request that any additions or changes to this list be submitted 
  329. by a sysop of the system (we don't take user-contributions of list
  330. information) - this is to protect the integrity of the list, and the
  331. systems on the list.  Please also be sure to supply a valid internet
  332. address.
