TITLE : Summary of New Features and Benefits of Paradox 4.0
Paradox 4.0 is the single greatest upgrade to Borland's award-
winning Relational Database Management System since it was first
released. Following is a brief summary of the new features and
benefits you will find in Paradox 4.0 for DOS.
Performance Improvements:
* Improved Network Performance -- Faster network speed, more
simultaneous users with less performance degradation.
* Faster Query performance -- overall improved performance
and new Fast operator which disables the creation of
temporary tables during Insert, Delete, and Changeto
queries.
* PAL Language optimizations -- Most PAL scripts and
procedures occupy less disk space and less memory, load
faster, and run faster.
* DPMI Support -- The performance benefits of protected-mode
Paradox become available under Windows.
New Features for the Interactive User:
* New Windowed User Interface -- More attractive screen
display; easier to rearrange and move objects. See your
data the way you want.
* Mouse Support -- Faster than the keyboard for many
operations, such as moving and resizing windows.
* Memo fields -- Store up to 64 megabytes of text data per
field; easily accessed and efficiently stored on disk.
* BLOb fields (Binary Large Objects) -- Store uninterpreted
binary data, such as graphic images or audio data.
* Index ordering and multi-field secondary indexes -- View
and move through tables quickly in an alternate sort
sequence.

* Autoconfirm Valchecks -- Automatically move to next field
when the current field's valchecks are complete. More
efficient data entry.
* Query restart option -- Gives you control over query
restart in a multi-user environment. Get Query results
even while others are Coediting the table.
* Form lock removed in Coedit mode -- New locking mechanisms
allow greater flexibility using multitable forms on a
network. Use multiple forms to Coedit the same tables.
* Support for read-only tables and directory-wide read-only
locks on LANs. Greatly increase lookup table performance.
* Postscript printer support -- Print reports on Postscript
printers as well as conventional printers.
* Report Previewer -- Browse reports on-screen in any
direction. Supports search capabilities.
The Application Workshop:
* Quickly develop full-scale, custom, multi-user
applications without programming.
* Multi-action feature gives the capability to execute
multiple actions from a single menu choice.
* Allows PAL programmers to attach procedure calls to
Workshop actions.
Enhancements for Application Developers:
* Enhanced WAIT Command -- Supports event driven programming
model. Trap for mouse or keyboard events across the
entire workspace, including multitable forms. Write
sophisticated data entry applications with less code.

information from the user, with radio buttons, push-
buttons, sliders, type-in boxes, check boxes, etc.
* Canvas and window control -- Create attractive programmed
screen displays; perform special effects by designing
overlapping, moving, and hidden windows.
* Getevent command -- Extends event driven programming to
mouse, keyboard and menu interactions. Gives you maximum
program control with minimal program code.
* New menu commands -- More menu styles available, including
pull-down and popup menus.
* New script editor -- More powerful PAL script editor,
supporting features such as search and replace, cut and
paste, and multi-file editing.
* Dynamic Arrays -- Large flexible data structures,
dynarrays can handle the most complex data storage and
manipulation needs.
* Support for new interactive features -- All new features,
such as memo fields, the Editor, BLObs, etc. also
available to PAL; PAL programs can simulate any user
interaction, and can enhance and control user interaction.
