The Bureau of Land Management was formed in 1946, by merging the
General Land Office (originally created in 1812) with the U.S.
Grazing Service (1934). Along with the functions of the GLO, the
Bureau also was the recipient of the records documenting the
transfer of land from the United States Government to the
private sector. The Eastern States Office share of those
documents amounts to almost 9 million records, some of which
predate the ratification of the U. S. Constitution. These
records are currently bound in nearly 10,000 large, rather
cumbersome books, the oldest of which are undergoing rapid
deterioration. Even so, these books are frequently used by
State and Federal agencies, title insurance companies,
researchers, and even the public at large for geneological
studies. As a result, these old records are literally being
used to death. Faced with the critical need to preserve and
protect these records while insuring their continued
availibility, the Eastern States Office is now engaged and for
the next several years in automating and preserving its GLO land
patent and survey documents. Successful automation will store
the information comprising these records as raster image files
that will be searchable via an automated index system to ease
and speed access. The documents themselves will be given
preservative treatment, and likely transferred to the National
Archives for long-term storage.
Presented on this disc are a few representative images of
documents that have involved famous personages in the history of
our country. We trust you will find them of interest.
Further information concerning the GLO automation project can be
obtained from the Eastern States Office, Bureau of Land Management,
Alexandria, VA (703-461-1400).
