[B]If you've never played Triad before[], please read through this short tutorial on how to play.\n\n+
Triad is played with a set of 81 [B]tiles[], no two alike. Each tile has a design on it which consists of:\n\n+
╖ [B]One[], [B]two[] or [B]three[] similar shapes, where\n+
╖ Each shape is colored [B]red[], [B]purple[] or [B]orange[], and\n+
╖ Each shape is either [B]solid[], [B]outlined[], or [B]lined[], and\n+
╖ Shapes are [B]rectangles[], [B]ovals[] or [B]triangles[]\n\n+
Some example tiles are shown below.
The game starts with 12 tiles visible on the playing board. +
Your objective is to find any three tiles which form a [B]triad[]--select the tiles in the triad (by clicking on them), and they will be removed from the board and replaced with three new tiles.\n\n+
A [B]triad[] is a group of any three tiles which are either completely identical or different on each of four criteria: the number, shape, color and shading of images on the tile.\n\n+
Below is an easy-to-recognize triad: the tiles all have the same shape, color and shading, and each has a different number of images.
Triads can be fairly hard to spot. For instance, the tiles below also form a triad:\n\n+
╖ They all have different numbers of images\n+
╖ They all have different colors\n+
╖ They all have different shapes\n+
╖ They all have the same shading (lined)\n\n+
With practice, you'll be able to spot triads you would have missed at first. Look carefully, but remember: the clock is running.
If you can't find a triad, try clicking the Hint button: the game will automatically select for you a tile which is in a triad. If you need [U]more[] help, click Hint again, and a second tile in the triad will be selected. +
But remember: clicking the hint button adds a penalty to your Elapsed Time--6 seconds for the first tile, and 30 more if you click it again.\n\n+
Also, be careful of selecting tiles that aren't in triads. For example, at first glance the tiles below may [I]look[] like a triad, but they're not: +
two of the tiles are lined, and one is solid. If all three were lined--or if one were solid, one lined, and one outlined, then it would be a triad. Selecting an invalid triad adds a 3-second penalty to your time.
Keep in mind that, given two tiles, there is only one other tile which will complete that triad.\n\n+
Although by brute force and long study you will eventually find any given triad on the board, your time will improve dramatically if you become adept at visualizing triads. For instance, consider the two tiles below: +
what would the third tile in their triad look like?
To determine what the tile will look like, consider the first two:\n\n+
╖ Because the tiles have 1 and 3 images, the last tile must have 2 images\n+
╖ Because the tiles have different colors, the last must be different as well\n+
╖ Because the tiles have the same shading (solid), the last tile must be solid too\n+
╖ Because the tiles have different shapes, the last tile must differ there as well\n\n+
With practice, you will find that your ability to visualize triads rapidly improves: you will be able to spot combinations that you would have missed earlier, and you will intuitively start searching for the most likely triads.
Finally, keep in mind that if only 12 tiles are showing, there [B]might not be[] any triads among the twelve.\n\nIf you are confident there are no triads among the tiles shown, you'll need to add more tiles to the board: +
to do so, click the Add Tiles button. Again, be careful: if you add tiles unnecessarily, a 5-second penalty is added to your score.\n\nEnjoy the game, and good luck!
